Well, put yourself in their situation and say that line again.
He didn't have the guide let alone manual to do so, and even by common sense, it would be quite an inhumane feat to figure these out using his perspective.
And now that he had inherited the guide, it would have made more sense to figure these out by thinking of other possibilities to explore.
