Everyone coming together. Then Reinhard joining at the end. Peak.
The speech started a bit weak but damn it picked up. So good.
Mhhh...
This episode went so hard next week is gonna be amazing and I am not sure what to expect...
Will they do the whole part with no death or will something bad happen. It is a speech made by a normal person who has accomplished extraordinary feats and who still does not fully realize it. It was the words of his companions that convinced him and made him more aware, especially those of Al. Thanks to these companions, he brought out a courage and communicative strength that he didn't even know he had, with simple, direct and sincere words he convinced everyone. This person is Subaru Natsuki!
Not a fan of his speech, doesn't resonate with me.
Expected something more motivational.
Well, you have to remember that he's still a 18-year old guy who is surrounded by people that are more amazing, powerful and skilled than him and this is the first ever public speech he made besides the one where he made a fool of himself in S1 as we were reminded by Julius in this episode...
But why do the people get totally motivated, as if it were a good speech?
I expected they get the bard to sing over the speakers.
It was a good speech though, he literally is the one who defeated the Sin Archbishop of Sloth and as Garfiel said, the kind of person they need right now is someone who can be trusted to defeated the Witch Cult. Also, you have to remember that the Authority of Wrath is still coming into play, which means that the emotions each felt were intensified so that helped.
You mention another problem I have.
Instead of making him having killed Sloth an anchor point of his speech, he just mentions it in a little sentence.
He started off by accepting the reality of things as they stand right now and showing them that he's scared and he feels powerless just like them, but then reveals to them that he's actually the hero who defeated Sloth which shows them that even if they feel like all is lost, they can still keep fighting just like him, which is why it motivated them that much. It makes sense to me!
That's what Season 1 Subaru would've done. But he learned to be modest, although a bit too modest. He's not the kind of guy who will boast his achievements and self-proclaimed achievements to improve his image anymore.
I think he decided to announce his achievement at the end to assure people and give them hope increasing their morale. If Season 1 Subaru said this, he'd be saying it for himself. But current Subaru we have now said this for the people.
What kind of "motivational" are you referring to? Is it like the heroic motivation speech that Erwin did or what?
I guess you need to look at it in the bigger picture, like the context of the present situation in that city.
Because Subaru's speech is pretty motivational for the people in Priestella; it sparks hope in them to think someone who's like Subaru, who is average like those people in the shelters throwing speech about not giving up, and at the end he also says his title to them "Spirit Art User who defeated Sloth Sin Archbishop", makes them very hopeful that they can win against the witch cultist, and motivated them in that dire situation where they feel no hope because of Sirius ability.
Subaru said what was needed in that situation, and that's why readers and some anime fans love the Subaru speech so much.
A zoom into the gaze of "Aldebaran".

He kinda looks like Subaru
Yes, I thought the same. Besides, the helmet adds a lot of mystery to the character, making it logical that when they reveal their face, it will be something significant for a character or plot. Because of this and the fact that Subaru mentioned the traffic light and he didn't even ask what that was, I guess he might be from Subaru's world or another dimension or timeline, something in that way.
Its not a spoiler cause It has been revealed in a re zero shorts (the spin off with the chibi ) Al is actually reincarnated as Subaru and Subaru knows it. I don't know why they only revealed this important information in a short but yeah, your theory was right. That's why Subaru didn't react about the traffic lights because they both know about it
Mini review
Honestly, this is a 10/10 episode both as an adaptation and as a Re:Zero episode in general (dare I say it's the best episode in the season so far and one of the best episodes in Re:Zero as well)
Emilia subverting the classic "damsel in distress" trope is done so well and it's a testament not only to Nagatsuki's great character writing but to her development in Season 2. I find myself yet again amazed how people can say Subaru "lacks development" when we have so many instances of scenes like this.
He doesn't speak to the people of Priestella as some paragon of strength and vigor; he himself is self-aware of his shortcomings, which makes the speech all the more relatable to the people who are as scared as him. Almost as if he's venting out his problems to them. He knows that they're as weak as he is and he doesn't try to mince words and just tell them "everything is all right" and leave it at that, rather inspires them to take action and help each other out. It pushes the people forward and in turn pushes him forward to overcome such insurmountable obstacles as well.
something i really like about this season is not that the story is doing something different from physically and mentally torturing subaru, but expanding the story to other characters and not just killing him over and over again demonstrates that subaru's character development over the past few seasons is real and he's moving on from the same mistakes he would've made back then.
Thank God the team at White Fox is still the ones in-charge for Re:Zero, this is so well done. Subaru's speech made me emotional again even after reading it in the Novel. He's not that smart to formulate something to manipulate the people, he only said his true feelings but doing so, he unintentionally made a successful manipulation in emotion.
First he started the speech with self-deprecation. Making him very relatable to the people's current situation. letting them know that he's at the same level with them if not, lower. Then he told everyone that despite his weakness, he won't give up, making the people question why the person as weak as them is not giving up. This part fully grabbed their attention now. Then he gave reason why they shouldn't give up. After that he started taunting them if Subaru is the only person in the current situation who is not giving up at all. That ignited their determination to survive. Then he closed the speech by introducing himself and his achievement making himself sound like a very trusted individual because he had beaten an arch bishop in the past. This gave them hope because the one speaking to them is someone who has dealt with an Arch bishop before,
Such a good speech.
