I can't believe her solution was to have Memerun do oshikatsu for an uta idol HAHA this is Gold.
In the usual fashion, the majority of the episode was pretty mid and the last 4–5 mins were only good because of that sweet mappa sakuga nectar
ngl this season is pretty ass in terms of fantasy/isekai, not a single above "average" show
welp ik no longer taking the stakes of this show seriously at all and tbh the showrunners know that. I could get past the princess girl becomming a wrestling fan but yeah now I know nothing is going to be taken seriously XD I honestly hope they lean into it more. Zany nonsensical magical stuff is still pretty entertaining for me! The animators really seem to be enjoying whatever genre of animation hits their fancy
it's stupid good fun and don't think too much about making it make sense. I'm quite enjoying this series so far
Something that interests me as we dive deeper into this show is that the movie Natsuko's been sucked into the world of, The Tale of Perishing, seems... pretty bad, from everything we've seen? Like it's got all these super cartoony 90s aesthetic characters put through a grimdark setting that doesn't fit the art style, Destiny is explicitly written in the movie to be a helpless problem-causing damsel with the most shoehorned romantic subplot imaginable, and no we find out the movie doesn't even explain why one of its main characters turns out to be a traitor? Like, no offense to Natsuko, but it feels like she staked a lot of her artistic identity of a shallow, half-assed piece of crap movie. And I wonder how much this show is aware of that fact.
yeah the whole idol section was totally unexpected. and bizarre. and wonderful. like, the solution of turning Memmeln into a stan / giving her an oshi was bonkers and genius.
also looking through the replies on this thread i feel like the show's marketing is really letting it down? people are coming into this expecting something really different than what it is - it's an isekai with an animator as the protagonist, a formulaic episode structure (kinda like an old school sentai or magical girl show!), and also an homage to many iconic and weird anime from the past, especially with Natsuko's drawings at the climax of each episode. you're not watching to see if Natsuko can defeat the Voids with the power of friendship or whatever, isekais are bad at that sort of suspense anyway. instead you should be watching to see what crazy thing Natsuko is gonna draw next, what bonkers thing this world is gonna throw at us next, what spectacle MAPPA is gonna light up the screen with next.
I'm eating my own words right now. Ever calling this show a disappointment is an insult, all I was doing wrong was placing the burden of expectations of seeing another Look Back onto this show, when in reality, this show thrives in its wacky magical elements. This was the episode that finally enlightened me to that fact.
If we remove any prior expectations we had and just watched its own charms this show is amazing. I want this show to lean even further into random, silly but fun moments, I think this is the real strong point especially with visuals as gorgeous as this.
Natsuko's drawing of a male idol anime character voiced by Miyano Mamoru rizzing up Memmelm by performing a musical number was something I was not expecting to see today yet I'm so happy I did.
Also, Natsuko looks so much better with her bangs covering one eye. It's one of my absolute favorite tropes in character design, it's absolute perfection!

I definitely thought this show as going to be a lot more serious than it ended up being. Since they pulled out the apocalyptic death cult in episode 4 I wonder what the stakes are -actually- going to be, since it doesn't seem like it's the voids.
I like the theme they have going so far of the effect animation has on people (Natsuko being inspired to work in animation, Destiny being inspired to strike it out on her own and be her own woman, literally giving Memerun something to live for) so I'm along for the ride. I wanna see what happens next.
