Really unsure on how to feel about this. On one hand it looks really unique and the animation looks great, but on the other hand it's just nothing like All You Need Is Kill? I understand that the manga isn't the source material but both it and the Edge of Tomorrow still shared a very similar atmosphere and tone and tried to follow the LN as close as possible while only adjusting minor aspects to make it work for their respective mediums. Not only does this adaptation change the protagonist for whatever reason, it also feels like I'm watching some Space Dandy episode and the art style just does not match the story whatsoever imo. I'd gladly be positively surprised once it does come out but this seems less like an adaptation and more of a re-imagining.
what a goofy art direction choice
the suits are dumb on so many million levels
weird elongated arm + leg proportions, big baggy pants, a face cone (?) and to top it off, she's wearing a pleated skirt on top of the uniform???
what absolute buffoon designed this? What magnanimously stupid buffoon then approved this design? How do we get here?
some of these choices on their own are alright, but all at once is just bizarre
I'm mildly intrigued, but -- wonky and questionable stylistic art aside -- there's a lot that can go wrong with this. Choosing to do it from Rita's perspective (if that's what it is and they have not simply gender-swapped Keiji) is a very interesting choice. I'm not opposed to fleshing out the story by focusing on her character -- however, there are some major issues I anticipate with this choice.
The biggest problem lies is the story's conclusion. I won't be explicit about things for the benefit of those who have not read it, but the dynamic is going may become very, very anti-climatic if she is our protagonist. And if it's a case of Rita being our central character for the first two parts and Keiji for the second half, it really deflates his arc and may feel redundant if we witness a character discovering themselves in a timeloop a second time.
I think it might be a big mistake.
that said
if they do a prequel and then switch PoV for the main story it could be fine
everything in this anime just looks very unthreatening and silly tho. Especially the aliens. I don't know how we're going to be able to take them seriously, which is a major problem for the story
Let's be fair, I'd very much argue the mimics in the manga are difficult to take seriously at first, too.
I'm less optimistic that it would be "fine" if it were a prequel and a POV switch. You could be 100% right and God knows I've been delightfully surprised by the creativity of the Japanese writers (I suspect I've been conditioned by Disney writers to expect slop!) and perhaps it is my own lack of creativity, but... OK, imagine you're watching Fight Club or The Sixth Sense and the twist happens (which would be Rita's arc), and then there's a second half of the film or a sequel and it uses the exact same twist (Keiji's arc). I just do not see it working unless the plot is fundamentally changed in some unexpected manner.
Plus, it feels gauche to mention, but I anticipate significant "culture war" problems. The original has a male character start as green, weak, and inexperienced and eventually become the big hero with the help of an awesome, hyper competent woman whose fear ultimately leads to her betraying him. Adding a new chapter to the story that follows her being weak and green before being outshined by the man and trying to murder him runs the risk of feeling particularly awkward in today's social climate.
I appreciate the discussion.
I see your point
regarding culture war things, depends on how much impact western producers have on the story - since Japanese people don't give two shits about gender politics.
regarding the plot, I agree with your concerns wholeheartedly. If they're a majority Japanese writers group, then I would expect to see a slavish respect to the source material, which will definitely kill the story for the reasons you mentioned. if it's a majority American writers group, they'll suffer from the politics issues you mentioned. It's hard to see the thing turning out good tbh.
That said, someone... unique had to be in charge to give us the bizarre art direction we saw, so who honestly knows what will happen.
regarding the mimics, I somewhat agree, but they at least have this alien sense of otherworldliness. The ones in the trailer just look like murderous trees
though I appreciate your perspective on the discussion, and it'll be interesting to hear your thoughts on the thing once it does release
Okay, I don't intend to start any arguments about Woke this and that, but the change of protagonist leaves me with great reservations.
I haven't read the LN and I've only seen the manga being an incredible work with sensational art, which compared to this trailer is almost a crime.
Again, I've never read the LN so I don't know what they'll use as a basis for the adaptation, but I know that the name is at least in the adaptation LMAO.
I love it when an IP ends up with almost completely different tones in different mediums.
I haven't read the manga/LN but I know that it's quite different from the Movie, which is already one of the best Scifi films of the last decade. And its by STUDIO 4C??? LESGOOO. Can't wait for this, genuine my most anticipated one this year now.
