What a absolute opener to the series and it being full hour long episode. Bravo!
Albeit few animation errors here and there, this might be quite a good anime this season although I still wanna keep my expectations a bit low since it is from Yokohama Animations and it was postponed last year.
A premiere with great potential that already caught my attention just from this 50-minute episode—I’ll definitely keep watching. At first, I found the time skip between scenes a bit strange, but it made sense later. The protagonist just wanted the best for his sister and Shirayuki, but the demons conspired against him, using his easily manipulated sister. I didn’t expect the protagonist to turn into an Oni and end up facing his own sister. I’m really curious about their fate from here on.
Just for fun, but the protagonist looks like a buffed-up Naofumi with the name of Sengoku Youko's protagonist, and his adult sister kind of looked like Holo lol—just without the ears and tail.
Mid animation
Mid pacing (the fuck those flashbacks without good transitions)
But i'm still curious how the story will progress
what the hell bro , this is not demon slayer.
Demon Slayer has absolutely crap pacing too.. Its full of unfunny gag humor, the first season goes to crap after the 10th episode and only has like.. 2 good episodes after that.
Saying that this has bad pacing is just insane, people got ADHD or something and not used to storytelling and need loud characters screaming and jokes 24/7? The first episode here was really damn good. The animation was nice as well, I didnt have any issues with it.
Kimetsu no yaiba but the plot is worse and the villain's motives are non-existant
Will continue to watch but it has dissapointed me lots
Kimetsu no Yaiba but the plot actually makes some sense, since the demon sister actually behaves like a demon.*
Since when demons need to have a reason to behave like demons? Nobody thought that it was a plot hole when they introduced demons on Frieren.
My critique stems from the character development we see during episode 1. At first Suzune is just a normal girl that is at least half demon, the protagonist and eventually Shiroyuki knows it and arent backed out about it. Then she discovers Shiroyuki is going to marry someone else and chrases out with 0 buildup whatsoever, its like she became incredibly protective of the MC right that instant for the crash out, thats why i didnt like it, not because "oh the demons dont have motivation to be evil" type BS
I dont like kimetsu but it clearly has better plot than this, at the very least better setup, and their first episode was 23 min long opposed to this anime's 54 min long episode
Well it was clear she was hiding her feelings for the brother from some hint, but i also agree that it makes no sense to see her rage out like that. She manage to stop Shirayuki and instead of acting within reason she decides to kill her, this makes no sense as she could have chased out the wimp away, she should have left the village completely, she could have either made the two (jinya&shirayuki) declare their love or also declare her love to jinya. Instead she kills her once she ran to jinya and act like nothing, like she wasnt her friend for the past decade, so much so that she was fine if jinya would choose Shirayuki.
Her character is simply built wrong at that point, same for Jinya who to protect Shirayuki accept she ruin herself for this dumb village traditions?? Like his goal was to protect his family, and the people of the village he cared about, it was not to be a mindless bot serving some dumb traditions. We clearly see that he is the only one capable of defending the village, he could have easily said that he was going to be the her betrothal and noone would have anything to object. Shirayuki character is about the same, after the time skip she is literally a mindless bot trying to continue a tradition that she knows will bring harm as it did happen to her mom and family too.
I think the basis for decent characters were there, but they were thrown out to chase some powerful dumb drama
I also dont agree with Passheco as the demons in this worlds had a precise reason to behave like that, they feared about the progression of the human race. Except again they act like mindless bots instead of searching for a better solution...
A mixed bag at best. Dialogue quite generic. The characters bland. I am not one to complain about animation as I don't think is that important.
I predicted those demons would end up killing the maiden, but the extra plot twist is just terrible. I would have preferred the story to stay "generic" rather than this spine breaking twist.
So here are some things I would change to make it work better:
I actually quite liked the plot twist.
1. Seems like most stories be it Vampires or Demons have the character remain the exact age at which they turned (This is where I like your first idea as it establishes a process to the matter)
Either way, despite a few animation goofs during the chunky demon fight, I'm looking forward to the plot development of our characters, as shallow as the antagonists' motives may be. The studio doesn't give me hope because they run their budget bone dry in the first few episodes of every series they adapt, but here's to wishing on a star the story develops further!
Ps. I enjoyed the gore at the end. I thought the maidens dead was a nice, brutal touch.
The current setup is overly complicated; you may have thought more about it than the author.
In regards to Suzune not growing up, I just initially thought "I guess demons just age slower and that is why they also live longer". I am not a fan of they just age normally at first and then stay young forever trope.
Fr I feel like I’m an Olympic level athlete in mental gymnastics when it comes to head cannon-ing plot strings lol!
I don’t feel the setup is too overly complex, just that it could’ve been better defined leading up to the climax of our first episode. The storyline itself is interesting but lacks a detailed vision and the devil is in the details. Many small things can accumulate to create a larger picture and I feel that may have been lost in translation during the adaptation process or even in the writing process of the authors original work.
I like the idea behind digging deeper than the author intended simply because that’s the purpose behind art (If consider animation and writing an art). Although maybe I do get carried away haha
Speaking of your last sentence, I agree. What’s the purpose of something aging like an incubation period and then stopping at some random, undefined marker. Not a fan. So I guess I’m glad she aged physically at the end… Although, the thing that strikes me as odd, is that her metal state still seems to be that of a child. So, it’s hard to say how much she’s actually grown outside of physical stature and strength. Feels like a Daki from Demon Slayer moment if I had to relate it to anything. Unfortunately, the demon vs sword genre uses Demon Slayer as the gold standard now, so it’s hard to get a fresh perspective on a story like this… you know?
Genuinely pretty crazy, but it just feels like Final Fantasy 16's prologue Though I haven't played it past the demo/prologue so forgive me there.
Not really sure how the story is gonna progress but it seems interesting atleast, rip maiden lady who's name will probably be forgetten since she died really quick (I just remember her title tbh)
That was quite a premiere. Talk about an origin story. Jinya went through that Tanjiro level trauma but, like, possibly worse. Suzune killed Shirayuki and destroyed their village all because she got manipulated by those goddamn demons. Even though they're dead, I didn't really feel any satisfaction. It's like the bad guys scored a huge victory.
Very interesting to see the huge time skip at the end. Curious to see what the dudes been doing for the past 170 years.
All in all, this wasn't half bad actually. I liked it. I'll keep watching and see how the story progresses. It's got promise. Overall I give episode 1 a 8/10
Pretty good first episode!! yeah, the animation isn't anything crazy, but I enjoy the tragic and emotional backstory this episode gave to both Jinta and Suzune!! It isn't a story that's a totally new idea or anything, but it does what it advertised well and I think depending on how the rest of the show goes this could be REALLY good!! I'm just hoping this anime doesn't have that "first episode" syndrome where the show peaks at the beginning (Ex: Oshi no Ko, To Your Eternity), especially since while I liked this first episode, if this is the best it gets that'll be disappointing.
To everyone saying the animation was bad, open your eyes.
I need to watch at least the next two chapters to decide if it’s a banger or a drop, though I’m still in shock by the fact that
the whole main plot would have never happened if the chief told his son “nah man, give up she’s in love with someone else” instead of supporting his nonsense. For godsake, it was not that difficult old man
You're not wrong. But I mean the guy lost pretty much everything as a result so it's not like he didn't pay a price for stupidity. Although who knows. Suzune was a bomb just waiting to go off. It might have happened no matter what. Heck, if Jinta had died in battle or grown old how would Suzune have handled that?
They may have been fortunate it happened the way it did. At least someone is aware of Suzune and motivated to stop her.
I guess you’re right, I mean Suzune had already shown signs of not being quite happy with the whole setting. Maybe she could have had a change of heart after Jinta and Shirayuki get married or something of the sort. Dunno, it’s interesting to think about other possibilities which could have lead to a similar ending, though the canon one is so dumb I can’t get over it.
This was compelling. Definitely wanna see where it goes from here.
Devotion vs love, especially where they both choose devotion, isn't used nearly as often as it could be, and it added an extra layer of tragedy here. The whole "we can't be together, because if we were we'd be betraying the values that made us fall in love in the first place" thing, and Suzune only seeing the results of their choice and assuming the worst. If he'd thought to say he knew and he'd accepted it, we might not be here, but he didn't.
Or if the chief hadn't meddled. That set up the whole conflict in the first place, that the demon could exploit for her own ends.
That was... really average. Animation aside, the only slightly interesting thing was the characters deciding to be true to their beliefs in despite of their love for each other. Other than that... eh. Pacing is weird too because of the flashbacks which could've just been linear. You know flashbacks and time jumps aren't well done when they stop marking the time jumps midway through when they initially did mark them.
Suzune sacrificed aging for Jinta... why? Had no reason to believe he needed her to stay a kid. She says she was betrayed and everything and is sick of people, but we literally only see one instance of that with their dad. Could have at least shown the villagers hating her, but nobody seems to care that she's a demon? The romantic angle is rushed af, and all for this misunderstanding shit that could have been solved if in the intervening time, anyone had told Shizune about the arranged marriage. Just feels way too reliant on melodrama.
I'll give this one or two more episodes, but I need more than a generic revenge storyline to grab me.
I found out the studio behind this was the same studio that did "whisper me a love song", which famously had a failure of a release schedule, I had quite low hopes. But I watched this because I love samurai stuff - this first episode didn't seem too bad. Will keep my eye on it!
The ending twist kinda caught me off guard - lots of crazy shit is said at the end, so now I wonder how this is going to go.
very weak plot, to be honest what Shirayuki did was not wrong but not right aswell, that old dude was the issue well i will see for a while but i dont like it much.
I do not know but any novel reader can you just tell me if my hypothesis is correct
that shirne girl at the end is a reincarnation of shiraayuki?
Duty to a community is (was) a highly praised virtue before the modern era. Many cultures still prioritize it.
Only in the recent decades has so much focus gone toward personal desires.
Not everyone has the same cultural values as you. And certainly those in centuries past would be even more different.
well that is exactly why i wrote what shirayuki did was not wrong but not right, and to be clear i am a cultural person myself, my cultural values are more important than my personal desires. and just to be clear what i meant by (not right) was not the decision taken by them but them hiding it from his sister, as far as i understand they all know that she is a half-demon and very invested in making shirayuki and the male mc. so if they had been clear this misunderstanding wouldn't have occurred. and they thought it was a duty to the community but that elder confessed that it has his own desire to marry shirayuki and his son. so ultimately it was his own fault. i hope this clears the confusion.
