Machu pretty much went head first into out smarting a black market delivery person, piloting a Gundam and even has a body count so it's mad funny to see her have a curfew she genuinely respects and a mom. Also that the name Machu is a nickname from childhood, I feel like she's gonna get busted quick lol
I feel like it's moving a bit fast and lacking in alot of character and connection building. I suppose I am used to the 25 ep seasons and the 50 ep totals of the old days. Honestly I think it's a disservice to the mainline Gundams to cut them down to 12 ep seasons but what can you do?
I was surprised at how fast they resolved the mystery of the Red Gundam, I mean I know it's still a mystery as to who Shuji is and why he has it considering how it went missing. I figured though it'd be a mid to end season mystery though.
As for Machu I do like that she does have moments of reflection and uncertainty and what she's chasing is the newtype connection. She's got some skill but at the moment it's more the psycommu working off her instincts rather than actual piloting ability. She has room to grow and hopefully they don't blow it.
I am curious about what direction Challia Bull will go in as right now he seems more fascinated by the GQuuuuuuX working rather than getting it back. Overall I'm still pretty positive and I'm hoping they can make things work despite the speed in which they are telling the story and the things they have to compact or gloss over.
I've seen theories that Char got like soul-entombed into the red gundam and seeing how Shuji is having conversations with it something along those lines seems likely. That or he's just crazy. And while I'm ride or die Machu/Nyaan i don't mind Shuji esp if its a "this is my gf machu and her gf Nyaan" situation.
Anyways, the action this episode was great, always a lot of fun to see newtypes style on some mooks.
I'm a layman in the Gundam universe but I started this one and it caught my attention. Do I need to watch something other than this to try to contextualize myself more? I saw in another discussion that they recommended The Origin or even the 1979 one, I have this doubt. Although this work here seems to me to be something more like an alternative universe.
yeah this show is an alternate timeline, its not required to watch the original show first but imo it definitely improves the experience. You only really need to watch the summary movies if you want to get through 079 quicky (still 3 2hr movies.) Challia Bull only shows up in 079 for a single episode that doesn't even make it into the movies, if you want you can just watch that one episode and stick w/ the movies.
I wonder if shuji's gonna turn out to be the son or adopted son of char. I find it sorta funny the clan battles are illegal but also so popular bars just have their stream playing in their bar with the bars seeming to know when exactly one will start. I also have to say I love shuji painting their experience with the psychic.
" you will need to also hide your face so you don't get found out or its over for you"
proceeds to put a beanie on her head
Yeah great way to hide someone's face !! :)))
Probably the best episode so far in terms of pacing. They didn't blow past everything like the last two episodes, though I really wish they kept Char's "death" in the last episode. Machu and Shuji are seeing exactly what he saw when he "died", there's meant to be a connection there. I'm assuming part of Char is stuck inside the Red Gundam or between life and death, kinda like how Full Frontal in Gundam Unicorn is meant to be his lingering hatred in the body of some random guy.
I like the Clan Battle stuff a lot more than the... whatever duels from Witch from Mercury. Here, they have this anti-authority edge to them like street racing, which helps to build the world, rather than just being "excuse to have non-lethal mech fights because we decided to set this in a high school." I like that they actually used minovsky particles in a way that makes sense for the setting and works with Clan Battle being an underground sport, and also tie that in with the MAV role. This episode's action is a great blend of tactical mobile suit stuff and over-the-top anime.
I agree, I like the idea of clan battles more than the arbitrary "we do it because it supersedes school policy and we can effectively do whatever we want if we win" feeling WFM had. Also the fact that we aren't being bombed with handfuls of new chars left right and center and thrown into the deep end with how they are supposed to interact with each other. Hopefully this tighter scope means we get more insight into the characters we have met so far.
Errr... I am the biggest "G-Witch was a letdown that only relied on Utena's fame to ride the waves" but the duels besides INSERT SICK UTENA REFERENCE HERE, had a purpose in the spectrum of families showing off their available resources to dominate the space with the weapons. The last arc of the S1 wouldn't have been any impactful if the kids had been killing people from the start. Was under utilized and wasted? For sure, but there was a purpose there and GQX can fail once again to the same hole so let's not sell the win before seeing more.
I'm not saying it needed killing (there isn't any in GQ's Clan Battles so far either) but the duels were transparently thought of as a premise before the actual reason for them. It is on the same level as Yugioh GX. All the economic manoeuvring and scheming could be completely upended with what amounts to the student council holding a fight. Yes, it shows that a company's mobile suit is better and thus has better resources, but that is it. It doesn't help that there wasn't much done with them outside of that.
Maybe show that they give the lower class futile hope. Maybe show the business consequences of a MS winning that aren't explicitly tied to the duel. Maybe anything other than "big companies can flex resources." All to better fit this high school setting that was itself unnecessary. GQuuuuuux's Clan Battles might not be anything amazing, but they feel more fitting with the tone and world than WfM's already.
Bigger consequences than Getrurk being sent to bankrupcy, and Elan being sent to the most intense tan session ever? There were consequences aside the ones the duelists fought for, if you didn't pay attention or remember those, that's on you rly.
R: Didn't expect to get blocked by such miniscule thing, oh well nothing was lost.
I don't quite agree with that last part that GQX clan battles can fail the same way as WFM's duels. After all in each duel in the academy Suletta was essentially put in "Win or be expelled" consequences. Not overly high stakes really, but for the sake of the show it was sold more as a do or die situation for her. Given that's how they played it the outcome was always assured that Suletta would win. Not to mention the Ariel started with a full OP armament including the funnel system which doesn't normally appear in other Gundam shows until mid/late season.
In GQX (at least for now) Machu does have the option of losing (or at least not winning if time runs out and the MP show up) as she's relying on pyscommu to pilot rather than innate skill, she doesn't know how to make use of her newtype abilities, and the GquuuuuuX has lost all of it's armaments and is relying solely on a stolen heat hawk.
Suletta never had a chance to lose that wasn't set up, meanwhile Machu does, she's no piloting prodigy, nor is she relying on her Gundam's OP weapons (as they were all destroyed/lost nor are her stakes for losing that high at least as of yet as all that's on the line is prize money.
GQX and Red Gundam are walking cheat code machines compared to the old models stolen, it is literally the same scenario. When Suletta wasn't supported by Eri she was quite weak and unskilled, exactly the same as Machu being carried by a system that allows her to do everything despite no skill at all, nor experience. Heck, we even had someone pilot the GQX before her to show us the difference between a regular pilot, and one who can activate the full capabilities of a Gundam with Omega Psycomm.
Again though, Suletta was literally written into battles she had to win, they were never going to have her lose because otherwise the series would end with her getting expelled. Literally every fight you knew she was going to win 100% there was never any doubt. Look at older Gundam series, they won alot and lost on the odd occasion and bounced back. I know WFM only had half as many eps but Suletta never lost, because plot, until she was forced to, because plot. Also yeah the GQuuuuuuX is an insane machine but right now it has none of it's proper armament and is being handled less efficiently, regardless of the omega pyscommu.
It's like if the best tank in the world ran out of ammo. No matter how high spec it is, if it's only offensive ability at that point is to ram it's enemy, then in this state it's no where near as strong as a slightly older model that still has shells to fire. I see the situation as similar but where as Suletta and Ariel were at 100% from the start I see Machu and the GQuuuuuuX as only being at 40%-50% tops
Yeah you're right. I have to wonder how Shuji will affect to that formula though, he clearly seems more skilled and equipped to battle.
I watched the recap movies a while back but I had no remembrance /idea what the hell minovsky particles were and just assumed they identified a unit as "hostile" or something when detected via the context I could glean
They are the exhaust of Minovsky reactors, the franchise way (at least in the UC timeline) of handwaving away how the mechs being nuclear powered can keep getting blown up but the earth is not a radioactive wasteland (at least I think that was the deal with them)
Anyway the thing about the particles is they interfere with radio signals and radar, so spreading them before hand is telegraphing that you are preparing for a fight so yeah.
YOOO THEY BROUGHT MY GIRL SUISEI IN FOR AN INSERT SONG?! Like I wasn't already happy enough with her doing the ending theme. They're really giving my girl some major love.
Another banger episode from this series. That fight was super slick, I'm loving their use of lighting during environmental scenes and the fights, and also those sweet SFX? Hell yeah!
