Tsumugi arc officially ends today!
Well overall this arc was good....but i feel like the song kinda cringe for an anime... They could make a more emotional oneits my personal opinion so dont be mad
Waiting for the next arc
Okay! That’s that. It was, alright. I didn’t like it as much as the first arc though. I honestly don’t know what to think about the story in whole. I got teary eyed, but I’m not sure why? It wasn’t that love squishy of a story for me to incite tears, or so I thought. The candles did creep me out for some reason. It looked more like an evil spell than a romantic gesture. Plus the song was cute, but I think there is cultural gap regarding the word cow when referring to someone, especially when it’s a woman. I get that in Japan it’s a reference to someone who has big boobs and it’s not meant maliciously, but in the US it has a much less positive meaning to it. So that was a bit offputting at first despite understanding why it was there.
In the anime it showed shizuku on the cow side especially at the previous episode where she dressed up as a cow due to her big boobs but that doesn't mean in japan they refer someone with big boobs cow. In this story, it's just showed as a fun thing for shizuku since she obsessed with boobs while having big boobs. The candles that used are not the same that used for evil spell thingy. It's showed all of her birthday as a candles rather than romantic or evil. It's actually looked good when you ask me
I had the same heartbreak during tsumugi route in visual novel. Though there is some scenes from VN didn't appear in the anime, I am still happy. Kamome and Tsumugi route is ended. Next is Ao and Shiroha route. Just want to say, keep your heart stronger during Shiroha's route. (Mugyu! Her song stuck in my head. Tsumugi song is actually amazing and made the scenes even more emotional. It made me cry. It's actually not cringe. It says cow and birds which means all shizuku, tsumugi and hairi and their time spend together with her cute mugyu in it. Which is perfect song for a childlike personality girl like her.)

Heads up, ranting time (I don't rant often, Tsumugi is just very beloved to me so that's why I have to do this.)
Okay, say that I have unreasonable expectations and I know well that you can't adapt a visual novel perfectly at all, but the most impactful scene of the arc just didn't....hit? I don't know why they decided to re-record "Tsumugi's Summer Vacation" with Iwai Emiri but it wasn't a great decision because it doesn't sound as good as the original. Also they re-arranged a bunch of lines of the song (and several were cut) which was not it.
Here is the original version (with lyrics):
There were some details during the candle scenes that didn't land for me either. They decided to make them sit instead of walking between the candles...Hairi is not crying as much. It supposed to be a very difficult moment for him, trying to smile through everything while being unable to stop himself from crying. And when finally Tsumugi disappears, he is absolutely devastated. The anime didn't really capture those feelings...
Like this (pictures from the Visual Novel):

Okay, these can be considered as nitpicks but there is one thing that absolutely got me fuming.
Visual Novel spoilers for Tsumugi route:
They cut the entire reunion of Tsumugi and Tsumugi-chan. Tsumugi-chan was the reason why Tsumugi even returned a year later because she realized that Tsumugi got her own people to care about, including a lover. But in the anime she just...returns.... no explanation whatsoever. One thing I admit I liked that Umi is the one who brought her back to Tsumugi-chan, that was actually a neat touch but they decided not to capitalize on that.

Yes, I know, I know. I'll say it once again: they can't include everything at all since it's a visual novel, it's not what I'm asking for. Just make the impactful scenes, as good as the original. That's all I wanted from this episode. There are plenty of good visual novel adaptations: CLANNAD After Story, Kanon 06, Steins;Gate. They are an amazing adaptation and they were all visual novels. They knew where to cut corners, how to change things to make the show flow better and they absolutely made sure the GREAT scenes were as as good as the original stuff.
To end this comment on a more positive note: I'm happy to see Summer Pockets animated but it could've been done much better and I'm happy I got to see Tsumugi like this, she is so important to me.
Rant end.
Some shows had made my drop a tear, but not show has made me literally cry. But the last few minutes made my cry so much I had to close the windows so that my neighbors would not hear me cry. I think I had never cried as much since I was a kid
2 or 3 more episodes for last route, does not seems a lot since the other routes where 6 and 4 episodes, but I doubt it will be bad considering how good this anime is
Finally, you guys (that only watched the anime) can hear the "Mugyu Song", also this episode for me have cuteness and sadness overload, even tho I said before that Tsumugi route is my least favorite, it's still getting me the same feeling when I finished her route, and of course, after that happen, Shizuku came to Hairi, it was really nice touch. I think for now you guys also kinda understand why Umi is also there, but I won't say anything, because I will let the show reveal the truth itself.
Alright, so Kamome route done, Tsumugi route done, I can really say that the next route will be Ao Sorakado. Of course, Inari (the blue mascot creature) will show a lot on her route, expect to hear a lot of "Pon" word, and also get prepared for another "Key" esque story again.

how did she come back? Why would she disappear? Also how did they know that she would be back In the end they were saying "Summer will be back next year"?
The emotional beats seem too contrived with the "daisuki" dialogue and crying being foisted on the viewer without any real build-up. I'm not convinced this style of storytelling really is going to endear us to the characters or their journey.
I get that the premise is from the VN, but there's hardly any character development that carries through the arcs. Contrast this with Maeda's other works or similar stories as someone had noted, there was a progression of the story where something was being built upon to a climax. These short resets and time skips do nothing to endear us to the character or take interest in their journey. Hairi is the catalyst among all the routes and we're seeing a handful of episodes for each arc, yet I'm having difficulty liking him as an MC.
I could care less about Tsumugi's backstory when there's no conclusion to her arc. I guess we're expected to treat this like the MC's journey in Kanon but it's hard to have a vested interest in Hairi's journey if it's only going to be reset again with another of the bunch of girls in this show. The Kamome arc was fun as she was a mysterious character to start with and the backstory made us care for her friendship with Hairi.
I guess having knowledge of some of the VN arcs I know where this is headed but IMHO this adaptation falls way short.
Okeyyy - I got thoughts and I got questions..
Thoughts: This was cute and sad, however it by far didn't have as much of an emotional impact on me as it seemed to have on others. Maybe because I was mostly confused through this whole thing. Also is this a Summer Pockets thing of kinda having a "bad" ending with every route having the girl disappear or something?
The candle thing was so unrealistic btw - it seems nitpicky but normally where would you get SO many candles and then light them on some small island, common^^'
Questions:
Who was Tsumugi in the first place? Was she the original Tsumugi's plush animal (in the end when she disappears there's the bear left). Or was she some soul fragment of Tsumugi that split off at some point? Why did the original Tsumugi got stuck in that strange other world anyways and why doesn't she seemed bothered at all (the original Tsumugi), that her lover and family were just left behind like that (also what was that BS with her not being "ready" - girl you've been stuck there for like 50 years or something. Move TF on srsly..). Then the story Tsumugi seemed to be there every summer and also didn't age?
While I get Keys supernatural story elements this anime has mostly been confusing me so far which is a shame as it's weaking the emotional moments a lot for me (also it's funny how the other characters in the story don't seem to be bothered at all by the supernatural stuff).
I used to cry during Key Anime, this show so far didn't even move me a bit to be honest (and when I think of Kanon or Air alrdy remembering the opening songs moves me and yes I still got em stuck in my head after like 20 years +). Maybe I'm just older and bitter now or maybe there's just something I'm missing here. I guess many people here watching the show know the game and have a far better understanding of the story.
Maybe someone can explain this to me and answer my questions? I don't mind spoiler from the game, don't wanna get stuck confused until the end of the show..^^'
I guess she was the teddy and I don’t think she had part of the original’s soul, but maybe as I believe there are circumstances of an item having part of someone’s soul in supernatural anime plot lines. Not sure on the spirited away but the visual novel people might understand better.
I relate to how key anime used to be sadder. This arc is the closest I’ve been to wanting to cry since Charlotte, which shouldn’t have a VN. I feel like Key anime adaptions have either gotten weaker or the stories themselves don’t work as well after you’ve seen several of them. Both arcs here I can say remind me of best girl Makoto’s arc in “Kanon” or Fuuko’s arc in Clannad. Makoto’s arc breaks my heart every time, but here it was only this recent arc that made me feel like crying, not that I did.
I think I read somewhere on Reddit, that she's the Teddy and OG-Tsumugi was jealous of her. But she eventually let her go to be with her lover. Still don't get how the OG-Tsumugi can't move on. Like what is she waiting for? Her lover is dead, her best friend is dead and her family too. What bothers me in the whole story is there isn't even a slightest bit of regret by her. She's like "I couldn't decide and now I am stuck here" and I call BS on that.. Also imaging her returning with the other Tsumugi or merging with her and having to find a new place in the world. That would've been some interesting stuff.
I agree with you saying Key VN have a certain formular calling out some similarities. Some have incredible stories (I also still think Angel Beats was amazing as Anime original production) but maybe we've seen it too many times now. Yesterday evening I skipped a bit through Air and Kanon 2006 again and man I was immediately hit with the feels again. And like I wrote I watched those shows almost or over 20 years ago. But maybe that's just something that comes with age (I'll turn 39 this year). You've seen so much stuff that some things just don't have an impact as much as they used to have.
Real Tsumugi is well.. the real one, the Tsumugi you know is her teddy bear that got Keys's magic gain her conscious because real Tsumugi really wish to have a friend and the island is actually very close to the spirit realm.
Tsumugi got her own magic time limit because that her og goal was to make real Tsumugi's friend remembered her. By the time the story start, all of her friend is already dead with Grandma Katou begin the last one to died. And since her time is running out she change her goal to "looking for herself"
Real Tsumugi still can't move on yet because the time move differently, and her conscious and memory kinda become fuzzy when staying there for too long, so she really need a huge push to make her want to go back to real world, in game it's implied that she will come out to the real world sometime later after she met with Tsumugi.
Other arc spoiler There is actually another heroine that get spirited away even longer than Tsumugi, to the point that she only remember her first name while her memory become distorted.
The other characters doesn't know about Tsumugi (Nor Kamome)'s situation, Hairi just briefly explain that his GF will be gone soon and they assume he mean go back home normally.
Okay, the prior arc felt similar to an arc in Kanon but this one is closer to the mark. I actually could feel myself wanting to cry at the end. That song was funny with Mumugyugyugyugyu lyrics and seeing her gone just zapped away that touch of joy and replaced it was sadness. That’s the closest I’ve come to crying with an anime based on a Key story since Charlotte. The song’s impact reminds me how Clannad After Story took a cute little song from Clannad and then made it rip your heart out. Gotta love the music in Key anime.
Kanon spoiler. You should watch Kanon if you haven’t.
Best Makoto in Kanon slowly becomes weaker and weaker. Unlike with Tsumugi, there was no pretending to be blissfully happy in her final moments. Both vanish and while Makoto technically shows up again, it isn’t Makoto unlike Tsumugi who appears during summer break it seems.
I just got caught up for the first time in a few weeks and I'm pretty disappointed in this arc overall. I liked the first 3 episodes enough but this one super dropped the ball for me. The things they cut out, the way they adapted certain scenes, the decisions they made, just very very disappointed on all fronts. It's not even bad per se, just really disappointing compared to how much Key had hyped this adaptation up in the pre-airing process. Just not a product I'd ever be able to recommend in place of the VN ever sadly
Finally done with Tsumugi arc. Again as someone who hasn't seen the Vn, overall I think the show is fine. Yes obv if I read the visual novel, I feel like the anime would hit harder for me, but i would also be more critical of it. but overall the anime has been fine for me. Rn its still a 7/10 for me.
When I'm comparing the two arcs. Honestly I enjoyed Kamome as a character more than Tsumugi, but i think the Tsumugi arc was better.
Again, prolly cus I haven't seen the VN, but so far I haven't cried or gotten emotional. I'd say I got at best 2 tiers below crying. the tier of I got super focused on what was going on and didn't want to look away at all.
