The most important scene.
Made me tear up every week man. Masterpiece.
And for every young person here who needs to hear it because the story hit a little too close to home: It really gets better when you are an adult. You will make it, and it will be worth it. When the credits started rolling upwards (which is such a unique touch) and that banger of a song kicked in, I felt that if this were a visual novel, this would 100% be the true ending.
Huge thanks to all the staff who probably went through more pain than anyone to bring this anime to life. The animation style was also really unique and stood out beautifully.
There was so much progress throughout this anime, but in the end, the solution turned out to be the simplest of all. Also, Shizuka's voice actor was a perfect match -- and honestly, I didn't even know Marina's voice actor could perform like that. It really surprised me in a good way.

All they needed were each other. Once both of them had a really good friend, they could fight the stubborn adults who make it a hell. It's not ideal that the adults are absolute pieces of shits but nothing can be done. That's just how it is. Sometimes somethings cannot be changed. But we can fight through difficulties if we have each other. That's what the anime wanted to convey- that's what I feel. No matter how hard things get, if we have something to relate to, we can be friends.
It was a sad and fun ride and I'm glad I experienced watching this as it was being released instead of months or years later.
After watching the first episode I decided to read the manga since it was under 20 chapters so I was able to read it all pretty quickly. Imo, I was a little disappointed with the manga and felt apprehensive about how the anime would handle certain scenes, and I gotta say the anime blew the manga out of the water.
I don't think I've ever watched an anime that has nearly pushed me to tears like this one has. It definitely wasn't a painless watching experience--I've had to stop myself from turning it off at a few scenes--but it was worth it to watch an amazing series wrap up beautifully. Props to everyone that made this happen and I hope it continues to get the recognition it deserves.
Thank you, Taizan5 and Studio Enishiya, for this unforgettable, beautifully timeless summer experience.
This entire work will stay with me for years to come, and I’m forever grateful for everything.
Every week had me on the edge of my seat. We laughed, we cried, but most importantly, we felt truly alive.
Ladies and gents, it’s been a pleasure these past six weeks. Take good care of yourselves and those dear to you, and stay happy-pi.
Happiness is born through talking -pi.

So another time travel was expected but not like this. It seems rushed that takopi suddenly remembered that he can use the camera one last time. But again it's takopi, he's doesn't remember stuff.
Junya again proved why he's the best character in the show. Bro sacrificed everything for his Lil bro.
I didn't understood the ending a bit. So Shizuka and Marina could hear takopi in their head? And they just patched up just like that.
When Shizuka was constantly hitting takopi I felt like something will happen, like maybe his mother coming there somehow or him dying which would earse everything that happened (he did died though, in a different way)
And one last thing, so did Shizuka opened up the stomachs of the other kids of her father? I didn't understood what happened from those news headlines
From what I understand the timelines got together to form a single timeline but with changes for the three children because it's based on takopi's memories and the camera so they can "hear him" while he's dead. The reason they made up so quickly is because they talked about it, marina opened up and probably eventually also Shizuka and like they said "talking cause happiness" so although they hated each other their shared memories and understanding of each other's situation made them to be good friends. We can also see in the last Scene that it didn't take a day or two because they still talking about it probably years later . And about opening their stomachs she probably did that because she talked about doing the same to the animal shelter people
I doubt she opened anyone's stomach, the last newspapers say
Voices of relief as the two missing girls found safe
The article says the 2 girls were in shock but otherwise OK.
Well yeah this was the translation given in the subtitles as well but as saarGG mentioned, Shizuka did said she was going to do the same to the animal shelter people. This is why I am a little confused whether she did it or not
She didn't. But the Shizuka one that wanted to do so was the one before the last timeline relapse. The next Shizuka was indeed still mad about Chappy's disappearing, but from what I understood, she managed to found Chappy (probably) in the shelter itself, and she got him back.
In the last timeline probably what happened is either chappy never bit Marina or that they got to be friends so she dropped the charges or something and they released chappy
from what i understand, takopi became a narator in the new timeline. As to why they still have a little bit memories of takopi, someone says that the camera can return to the memories that they capture. But using takopi "Happy Powers", he used his memories combined with the picture to return to that time and only the people that involved with takopi gets the reminder of takopi.
Yeah it feels very nothing to me. No one learned any lessons and the actual solution was magic that makes marina nice to shizuka. I'm sure her mother is totally fine with that! The most interesting part of the series was for me was the moral relativism and showing how much harm can be created with someone being "fundamentally evil" like many like to assume due to cycles of abuse.
The learning was "talking can bring happiness-pi"
Thinking about it you might be right that the intent was for takopi's worldview to be justified. Which is kinda bizzare to me. What I was finding interesting was that even though both Marina and Shizuka were victims of abuse because of who their parents are it was effectively impossible for them to get along in the short or medium term especially because at this age where they aren't emotionally mature. Maybe over like 10 years as they both matured marina would come to feel guilty over her actions but you don't go from i'm going to stab you for taking my father way to we are chill now in 30 seconds come on. It felt like the arc of the series was takopi coming to understand this. Maybe i'm just a misanthrope though idk.
I mean Takopi did come to an understanding. He would say "talking can bring happiness-pi", but in the beginning he never actually "talked" with Shizuka. He saw problems and just tried to fix them without even understanding why they are problems in the first place. He would see her be upset because her notebook would be thrown away, but instead of trying to understand "why" he would just feed her the correct answers. He never thought about fixing the root causes of anything because he never actually tried to talk and understand, so he just put bandaids on everything. He also didn't really understand the concept of talking. When he saw two people fighting he just assumed they liked each other because they talked so much.
The message reinforcing Takopi's simplistic and childlike world view is a form of comfort, but it really isn't just "if you talk to people then everything will be ok" because we see that failing plenty of times. In order for talking to work you also need to listen as well for that to be the solution and the story is really about Takopi obtaining that knowledge. It's a childish world view, but the execution requires a level of maturity and understanding that underpins how it actually works rather than being some pipedream. It also doesn't even try to say that just talking alone will fix things as Takopi had to sacrifice his life for everything to work out in the end. I think the goal of the writers was to show that even the most simple and childish sounding solution has all these complex and mature requirements for it to be properly realized.
Also with your other comment, we see very well that Marina's mom absolutely isn't fine with it. In the final scene we see that Marina still gets attacked and sliced by her mom. Takopi didn't hocus pocus everything to be better. Their lives are still hell, but they now have a support structure around them to help them get through it.
Short because im on mobile.
At the start in the first timeline we see takopi's first suggestion is for marina and shizuka to talk it out. Its why he goes to see her transformed even, thinking he can resolve the whole thing real quick. You are right he doesnt understand true conflict though. But its not like shizuka and marina fixed the root of their hatred in the ending either. To me takopi sacrificing himself to create a cross timeline psuedo bond is a nothingburger. Maybe that does work (its magic afterall) but i find it uninteresting.
As far as the comment about her mom yeah shes still abusive but that's the original timeline level. I do not think it would stop at just that if she told marina to stop hanging out with the daughter of the woman who she feels stole her husband and she refused. But i admit i made a petty jab out of my annoyance over what i felt as a disregard for the root cause of marina's feelings. I agree everything isnt better but from the perspective of shizuka the social conflict was her major concern and the focal point of her life, its a happy ending for her (relatively) and everyones lives are pretty much the same. Which i do agree is the better writing choice but the ending scene showing them being friends makes me think the focus was on this social conflict rather than this aspect.
I’ve been enjoying the anime more than the manga for a while, but in the end this finale still doesn’t work for me. I do think that what it’s going for on the thematic level, that pain & trauma are often inescapable but having a support system or just people to relate to about that pain in general makes life a bit easier, is a very worthwhile one. And on a broad conceptual level, a better timeline born from Takopi actually learning what real empathy looks like is also an at least appropriate ending to the story. However, the execution leaves much to be desired.
A lot of the problem comes down to how the ending, both on a narrative and thematic level, doesn’t actually feel earned IMO. The resolution basically hinging on Takopi’s ghost whispering in people’s brains to be nicer feels much less emergent from Takopi’s own growth than the guy’s growth, and the rather quick presentation & pacing of it when combined with that fact just kinda feel like a regression into the same shallow, unnuanced feel-good world view that the show started out by criticizing.
The lack of thematic resolution also highlights narrative issues that I wouldn’t care for otherwise, like how the Time Machine being suddenly restorable is an asspull, not to mention how it undoes a lot of the stakes for everyone except Takopi, and the explanation for it, Takopi’s amnesia being undone, was itself a case of twist-itis-fueled narrative clutter.
A lot of that just kinda compounds into the end product as a whole feeling very insincere to me. There’s a lot I like here, from the base concept to the themes to the visual flourish to the sense of black comedy, but a lot of it just doesn’t cohere into a story capable of utilizing those elements to the fullest. I do get why other people like it and call it a masterpiece, but for me the story just doesn’t really work
Agreed. In my opinion this last episode and a bit felt quite rushed and somewhat contrived, with Takopi suddenly regaining his memories from head trauma and then also suddenly having a Deus ex Machina moment with the "happy powers" restoring the camera's function. I also don't fully understand what actually happened after the final time rewind. Was Takopi's soul split in three and part of him resides in all of them now? Why would a stupid octopus doodle in Shizuka's notebook stop Marina from bullying her? It all just feels very unsatisfying, even though it's the happy ending we all wanted.
I think it's more like the kids have some faint memories of the other timelines. For some reason.
Takopi is probably gone for good, the voice we hear would just be what he felt toward all the characters before going.
And somehow, having these faint memories of the time they spent with Takopi turned things in a better direction? Not sure what the message is here.
I figured that's probably what it was too, but it doesn't make sense in the context of the story to me. None of the other times Takopi re-winded time did any of the characters exhibit lasting memories of the other timelines, then in the ending they suddenly magically keep some faint memories of Takopi. It just feels contrived. I wish they had taken some extra time to give this a proper ending but based on this review of the manga it seems they just adapted it mostly the same.
This time, Takopii actually sacrificed himself to rewind, it wasn't just the camera doing its thing. So maybe he was able to infuse some of his feelings into them somehow.
But yeah, it all seemed too magical and convenient in the end. It might have worked better if we actually saw how Shizuka and Marina patched things up. I can totally see how they could become friends when they realize they both have a shitty family and they decide to stick together through it. Would have loved to see something like that.
The message was understanding. The two girls didnt have understanding of each other, that shared moment of grief over faint memory of takopi created an emotional connection between the 2, which would be a sapling for a future relationship. The important part is a shared intense moment of grief.
Icl thought it was made explicit without having to spoon feed us with some narration
No need to be condescending with that spoon feeding comment, I understood that their shared memories of Takopi was the trigger that made them closer to each other.
What I was referring to is that after all the violent abuse, they conveniently go back in time one last time and everything seems fixed in a few moments looking at the doodle of Takopi and they both go home like friends would.
Having such a broken relationship fixed in such a "deus ex machina" way doesn't feel right to me and I wondered what the author was thinking when he wrote that.
Even if I don't like that "time rewind" plot device after all we've been through, it would have felt better if we were shown the 2 of them slowly patching things up.
I said spoon-fed cause it feels like a narrator was needed to explicitly state "This moment of understanding has created the first thread of connection between the 2 girls, which will slowly grow into a friendship ribbon as they grow closer from their similar abusive household". Or else people assume that everything is fixed right there and then.
The thing is you assume its fixed in that moment, rather than at that instance they became amicable towards one another and slowly became friends as the years went by. I did not see anything in the finale that indicated everything was alright from that one night, and they are friends.
What it depicted was the first instance of understanding between the 2, which will be a building block to slowly become friends.
If I'm bawling my eyes out alongside someone I hate I'm not gonna want to resume my bullying that same night. Doesnt mean I consider that person a friend.
He was just present until he said goodbye at the end and they could feel his presence to an extent. They could not hear him and nothing he said was affecting their actions. People saying takopis words was the main reason for the changes of the trio are plain wrong. It was the faint memories and emotions that they could feel.
A lot of people are saying his memories returning is an ass pull even we see weeks if not months of time passing before it comes back and not a convenient or crucial moment.
They could not relate to one another. The fuzzy memories of Takopi and their shared emotional journey with him is the first and only thing they can connect to, and deeply at that. This shared Understanding formed the based of a future relationship.
Like the guy under said takopi using his essence to turn back time left lingering emotions and faint memories which is why their behavior changes slightly
I never thought I'd get to use this word, but this is a Deus ex machina.
I think the first 3 episodes were a 10/10, however I noticed it dragging with Azuma's storyline. Then you have the camera inexplicably fixed. I might of missed it but why did Azuma not go to juvee? Also Shizuka's whole character dramatically shifts sporadically, in a way that doesn't feel particularly believable, just so she can be made to look bad in contrast with Marina? Takopi remembering his past, despite it literally being magically erased. Takopi gaining the power to erase himself - something never explained before or even during it happening. All the characters having memories of Takopi somehow? And these memories somehow fixing an unfixable scenario? And by unfixable, I mean this was completely fed in two timelines, and within one timeline repeatedly fcked on multiple attempts. I understand Takopi being in the timelines being the one that ruined them, but even in the one where he didn't hang out with Shizuka, she still tried to kill herself and she still lost Chappy, and yet without him being involved with Marina or Shizuka, that suddenly works because of a drawing and memories they shouldn't have?
I mean, I really really wanted to absolutely adore and love this show. I was so ready for it to be a masterpiece given how good it started and it only being 6 episodes (less chances to f*** up), but this just soured my taste. The art, animation, soundtrack, sound design, characters, story, is all so good, it hurts, but I can't in good faith rate this a 10/10 like I was originally planning. Such a shame.
Why would Azuma go to Juvee? he never turned himself in, the conversation with his brother stopped him and then he never went or turned himself/the evidence in
Shizuka's character doesn't shift sporadically, it's been shifting the entire time, since the murder her character changes DRAMATICALLY from the trauma and continues to do so, when she goes to find Chappy, only to find him not there AND her dad pretends she doesn't exist it makes her snap and get violent, i wouldn't say she's meant to look bad compared to Marina but rather that's her finally breaking just in a different way from her suicide attempt, she gets violent and angry, as the saying goes Hurt People, Hurt People
Honestly we just didn't learn enough about Takopi here which IS a bit of an issue, but it's likely that the blunt force trauma from what Shizuka did jogged his memory and brought them back, Takopi left in the middle of the memory wipe so it's safe to say it's possible that it didn't work as intended, suppressing his memories not wiping them, and i wouldn't say he gained the power to erase himself but remembered that he could use his own life force to activate an broken artifact, which yeah is a bit of an asspull which is a bit of a downer
I wouldn't say they have full memories but yeah they seemed to have faint memories which is more then likely due to him using himself to activate the camera, bits of him leaked through i assume and let them carry very faint memories of him, again a bit of an asspull but it's a more reasonable one
For that last bit it was NOT unfixable, as that's ignoring the whole point, they were two people on opposite ends of a situation they had no control over and being on opposite ends they also couldn't understand each other, Marina was violently abused and took out her fear and anger on the one person she could fully blame, even if unreasonably, once again hurt people hurt people, what happened in the end here is the lingering memory of Takopi acted as a separate catalyst of trauma for them to bond over, once they both saw the drawing of Takopi and both had faint memories surface they both fell into grief and Trauma Bonded, they weren't friends but they now had a common ground to talk on and eventually use to talk to each other and understand each others problems, which btw never went away as we see Marina still gets that scar, here we see that Takopi's death acted as a stepping stone they didn't have before to de-escalate the situation and even turned it the other way around by giving them breathing room and even footing to understand each other and put their differences aside
The scenario before that was unfixable though. The camera was broken, and Takopi suddenly remembered he could sacrifice himself to fix it? His wiped memories were about Marina and the other timeline, not himself, so this doesn't make sense. It just seems a rushed ending to me, probably caused by a request to wrap things up quickly in the manga's serialization.
The message is beautiful, "Happiness is born through talking (and understanding each other)", but the way Shizuka and Marina make up is just rushed and unrealistic; I mean, they cry over a doodle and then decide to go home together acting as if nothing has ever happened?
Another episode was needed to show how they slowly became friends but yeah, nothing you can do if the manga is that way. For me, it was 10/10 until those last 10 minutes of episode 6.
like i said i agree the sacrifice was a total ass pull deus ex machina
I wouldn't say they went home like nothing ever happened, in fact years later we see that while they are friends there's still clearly a little bit of aggression from them about it with how they treat each other in that store, it's just been converted to more of a passive aggression but they both know they don't really mean it, if that kinda makes sense, it's a really weird dynamic the show goes for to show off, that bit with the doodle isn't them becoming friends, that's kinda the mistake your making here, it's them crying, getting too tired to fight each other after said crying (crying like that in grief is in fact very exhausting) and then leaving together while starting to put their differences aside after bonding a little bit over a shared traumatic event, they are not friends there, nor even friendly or in any way like each other, they also both know what happened and both still have issues with each other, however the doodle made the recognize they CAN in fact see each other eye to eye so after crying they decide to just go home and leave it at that, though i do totally agree i wish we got to see them actually become friends, should've added another 10 min to the ep since it's a finale
I'm not saying they were friends at that moment, but their behavior clearly changed drastically. Especially Shizuka, she just forgot what Marina was doing to her 10 seconds earlier and decided to go home together. I don't know, it just feels forced. I'm not against the happy ending, I'm against the way it was executed.
Thank you for putting my exact thoughts into words.
I absolutely loved this show from the beginning, but this ending kind of ruined it a bit for me. It was not a satisfying conclusion at all, despite it being a fairly "happy" ending. It just all seemed way too convenient, how Takopi could suddenly fix all his mistakes by something he now conveniently thought of but didn't before. It really threw me off, and didn't feel believable enough imo.
Hm, can't say I like that ending very much.
Another reset that came from nowhere and then, the Takopi that kinda lingers in the kids memories quickly drive things toward an happy-ish ending...
Still, the anime had interesting things to say on very hard subjects and it looked amazing so I still love it but too bad it kinda petered out in the end.
I expected tears from this episode but I got a different type of tears than I had expected. I was expecting a bleak and horrible ending for everyone, because we’ve been traveling down the bleak and horrible highway this entire time. I mean, watching the OP for the last time, I had a tiny chuckle to myself because I was like “she’s dead, he’s dead, she’s horrible, she’s an abuser, he’s a deadbeat, he’s a victim, she’s an abuser, he’s okay but doesn’t pay attention to Warning signs…” and so on.
However two miracles happened. The camera was fixed for one last photo, and Takopi finally listened, thought about what he was told, and knew exactly what he could do to actually make all three of the kid’s lives better.
I love that all three, well I guess not Marina because she was still dead, got cathartic moments with Takopi before the timeline was erased. These moments also helped Takopi realize what he needed to do. I guess he just planted vague memories of himself into Shizuka and Marina Ai that they could bond over how much of a loving buffoon Takopi was? That’s my take at least.
Notes on the after credits: first, thank the gods Chappie is also okay and thriving. Second, I noticed that Marina’s scar from when we see her as a teen is now on her face. However, this time she has the right person with her to get through the trauma safely. Third, Shizuka cleaned up and genuinely happy was a breath of fresh air. I’m glad that it seems that the monsters that Shizuka and Marina could have become seem to have been halted.
Also, I would like to reiterate what the original poster of this discussion said. Growing up sucks for most people. I didn’t have a great childhood at all, but as an adult, I truly discovered my people and learned to be okay and accept my true identity. Life gets better. It’s still hard and you have to work through it, but at least you’ll have tools to do the work instead of feeling helpless as a kid.
I though that another lesson from the show was that people are pretty nuanced and I 100% that you would call other characters victims and other abusers if the script played with it. I don't know, reducing someone like Shizuka to just one sad label does disservice on how complex she is.
Tiny note: The parents are still assholes
Despite its issues, this is a pretty good ending, and a logical one in that. Takopi realising that the best way to help was to not help at all AND leave behind "remnants" of his existence and friendship, did worked better indeed. Their lives weren't fixed, but they aren't alone now, and that makes things one million times better.
I'm sorry Takopi bros I thought the ending was going to be crap. I'm so glad to be proved wrong (Even if what happened is a bit of a deus ex machina)
As for today Takopii's Original Sin ended. The animation quality is amazing and the story is good as when I read the manga. Shizuka is the evil? Marina is the evil? Azuma is the evil? No. None of them are either villain nor evil. The real villains are their parents. As I said this before, this anime is about dark side of japan. Like suicide, bad parenting and etc that never shown to tourists or people from outside. Most of this actually happened in real life too and still happening today. I am japanese and I escaped this situation by having good family and friends but all I can give is "be happy" to others that are suffering from this. Sayonara Takopii, Shizuka, Azuma and Marina! Hope your future looks the best. As for now goodbye forever! (My Score: 10)

You know, Part of me expected Azuma to end up wtih Shizuka in this timeline too as I thought it looked like he had some genuine feelings for her. But it looks like in this timeline they aren't even friends lol. Would have loved to see a little bit of timeskip azuma too, but his romantic relationship with Shizuka and marina was a little bit toxic as well.
Anyway, this timeline works in the end, since Shizuka and Marina have a fiend they can lean on, Azuma made up with his big brother and Chappy is alive (YAY!). Bittersweet ending for sure, since No more Takopii unfortunately, and the trio's parents still suck (I'm curious though, did marina's father leave his wife for shizuka's mom in the end? What does marina's mom think about her daughter being friend with shizuka, the daughter of the woman her husband spent money for? Where is Shizuka staying since both her father and mother forgot her?), but the other timelines were way darker
i read the manga last week cause i couldnt way but im stil very surprised that they managed to squeeze out a good ending from this show. its a pretty great ending too, doesnt feel forced or a stretch to me. very happy for those kids because they deserve everything in the world after what they went through. think the whole scene with shizuka wondering what she shouldve done is my favorite in the show, the va did a fantasic job. the ending song also hit like a truck. didnt expect this show to be so peak but im very glad it was.
