Taiju is a 1 dimensional brain dead idiot and Senku is a generic genius clever guy that isn't as witty or clever as it's writer would have you believe. On top of that his "10 billion percent" is not something that some scientific genius and expert in probabilities would say because it is just stupid. The whole "now this excites me!" catch phrase is annoying. They were trying to make the character endearing by adding those things but it just makes him way worse. The setting and concept behind the show is interesting and could be good, but the lead in of everyone just randomly getting turned into stone and by some stroke of luck happening to break free 3000 years later is just dumb. they should have just done some sort of post-apocalyptic deal, and they didn't even have to show them before the event. There's even more reasons I could list why this series sucks, but I'll just end it there.
So stop watching and don't cry over it.
Do you want attention or something, why to invest so much anger and words on a show you do like? just stop watching it.
buddy why are you so salty? i'm just giving my opinion on the show and was interested in if people had a similar opinion or experience. i'm not angry at all. it really sounds like you are the one who is angry. feel free to give your opinion on the show or offer criticism to my opinion, but just being a salty bitch isn't really productive. also, maybe i will drop it. who knows. i'm going to watch the next few episodes and see what i think of it.
I watched both episodes that came and it was not for me so far.
I am not mad at all and if all you looked for is that people will agree with you to get some ego boost, go ahead.
i literally said in the comment you responded to to feel free to offer criticism, so i'm obviously not looking for people to just agree with me. i'm more than willing to have people offer an opinion to counter mine. "shut up and stop watching the show" isn't an argument, isn't productive and isn't criticism.
I don't get it, either you want someone to change your mind on the show or that you are looking for someone to agreeing with you on "not liking what's mainstream".
Either way, enjoy yourself, there too much anime to watch for me to waste time here.
You just aren't paying attention to what I'm saying. I'll spell it out clearly for you: I'm not looking for someone to change my mind. I'm not looking for someone to agree with me either. I just put my opinion out into the void and I'm looking for others to do the same, whether they agree with me or not. What I'm not looking for is for people to come in and make comments that don't contribute to the topic of the thread, for example "stop watching the show and quit crying"
The reason I don't like Dr. Stone isn't "because it's mainstream". I like plenty of mainstream anime. The reasons I don't like Dr. Stone are the reasons I laid out in the OP.
Bro get over it, there is always a guy like you, cant handle a single bad opinion about the show you like, not everyone has the same opinion as you buddy, just accept the opinion of the others. Its because of people like you some people (like me) dont comment and dont express our opinion if we comment about a show that the most people like we have the all world against us and insulting us.
Or he's discussing an anime that he's watching
...like the majority of people on this site do.
@Fullbit I've never seen someone have such a toxic response to someone opening up a conversation about an anime. If you have no desire to discuss then don't, but acting as if peoples desires to open up discussion only comes from a "strange/ego driven" place is incredibly cancerous, you don't have to interact in forum threads like this if you don't want to, but no need to come in and try to act superior :P
bruh honestly i agree with xrishox, the concept of them waking up 3000 year later is dumb they only reason im watching this anime is cause i heard the manga is god tier. xrishox is just offering his opinion on a specific subject, hes not shoving his dick in your face and forcing to accept his view. its understandable if you have a different view on an anime but its a scum bag thing to do trying to shut them down, again i respect your opinions just dont go shutting people down by saying they are trying to inflate their ego its just a shitty thing to do
It's literally 2 episodes lmao. How are you going to complain about character development when there is 40 minutes of airtime? Also, if you've read the manga, I guess you are entitled to your unpopular opinion.
i've read a decent amount of the manga. like 30 chapters or so?
also where did i say character development? i complained about who the characters are. seeing as how i haven't read the entire manga i won't make any statements about how they develop over the course of the entire series. though i can't imagine senku changing from the condescending snarky genius(written by someone who isn't smart enough to pull it off)
Every single time some sci-fi or fantasy seasonal show airs, there's always people insisting that it is just too "fictional" or "unbelievable". The writing is kinda awkward and the characters get obnoxious. Those are certainly aspects of an overrated show. But to say you just can't believe it is just lazy criticism. They are literally in a post-apocalyptic world where a light turned all of humanity into stone for 3700 years. The entire premise is outlandish. The stroke of luck sets up the whole story. Like if you can accept that a beam of light can stop human civilization for millennia but not that one of them breaks free by sheer luck from the environment, I don't know what to tell you.
i actually think that this is reasonable. i think that i would probably be fine with just chalking it up to an arbitrary process to lead in to what the show is actually about were it not for all of the other issues i have with the series. i mean i still think it was a stupid set up but ultimately it's what happens after the event that actually matters. i mean that's what you have to do for basically every single stuck in a video game isekai and a number of other things. i was probably being nitpicky there.
I agree that Taiju is one-dimensional as shit but Senku is pretty cool so far. Seems far more interesting than your average shounen MC, and certain lines like "I'll beat fantasy with science" drew me in quick. The opening/ending and art are really good too. I do think everyone turning into stone immediately was weird, but I feel it gives it a mystery feel, and makes you just as confused as the characters are. The "stroke of luck" thing doesn't make any sense though. It's been 3700 years. Plenty of time for a coincidence to happen. I'm invested af in the story already, but I can see why it's not for everyone.
yeah i agree with pretty much all of this, especially the thing about the lack of character development. a friend recommended me to read the manga and i'd hoped senku wouldn't be...like that the whole way through, alas, he is; the one time i thought he was finally going to show some kind of vulnerability/emotion (i can't think of the word i want), he didn't. and his catchphrases are highly annoying. other than that, i think the obvious science-y theme is cool and interesting
why is 10 billion% not something a scientific genius would say? i can only think of two explanations for why you'd think that:
1-you're expecting every smart science guy to be sheldor from big bang theory and be hyper-literal about everything
2-you don't know basic math and don't understand that percentages over 100 are a thing
Saying things are just "dumb" isn't really criticism. You actually have to give examples of why something doesn't work. Why is it dumb to say 10 billion percent? Obviously over 100% isn't possible, but his self awareness of that fact is what gives the hyperbole its impact. Taiju isn't 1 dimensional. He''s simple. There's a difference. And instead of just dismissing his simple nature, the show actually strives to find value in it, which is very unique for shows like this. I'm gonna have to disagree with this whole post.
All I got out of that paragraph is "its just dumb", personally, I dont think its really over-rated, the manga wasnt really nearly talked as much as the promised neverland, its competitor when they both came out around the same time. Id like it if you just go into detail with your criticisms and not label everything as simply "dumb", tell me WHY its dumb. Simply stating something that happened in the show then calling it dumb is not explaining why.
Also, in my personal opinion, its really easy to label a character "one dimensional" or "generic" just because you dont like them due to having seen the act done before. Not liking a character doesnt make them one dimensional/generic.
Not an attack, just my own thoughts cause I see a lot in the anime community label characters they hate right off the bat as 1 dimensional or generic without trying to dive into them and see why they behave that way.
It's a battle shounen just like MHA, Fire Force, Naruto, etc. If you've seen one you've seen em all.
It isn't a battle shounen tho????
It's similar enough.
Is it?
I'd compare it to a battle shouen the same way I'd compare Death Note (which, btw was stated by author to be "a battle shounen without fights") to a battle shounen - all the tropes are there, they just choose to focus on photogenic science rather than fights
Well, in that case i think it's pretty unfair to say "If you've seen one battle shounen you've seen them all" then.
i agree with some of what you say.
first, the reason it's so overrated it's because of the manga's popularity. and i wouldn't say overrated, more like overhyped and popular.
It's a shounen (i think?) therefore it has many cliche elements that many people do not like.
taiju is generic stupid pea-brain shounen MC, the girl is fucking ugly and her voice is really annoying. i don't really have a problem with senku or the lucky way he broke free or something. i like that it has an unique setting and all and i'm waiting for more characters from the manga to appear to completely form an opinion about this anime.
all i can say now is that it's clicheic, not too bad but not too good, so i guess i'd say a clicheic mediocre anime with good soundtrack and an interesting and promising setting.
Do not invite him to my birthday party.
I live under a rock these days so I never even heard about this story until the poster for the anime came out. I'll say that I kinda agree with Aless in that I find the setting to be the most interesting thing by far. I also enjoy the whole post-apocalyptic scenario forcing the survivors to engage in division of labor suitable to their physical and mental capacity.
Taiju could definitely use some layers to his character. Suspension of disbelief will allow me to buy that 3000+ years have passed and that the power of love eventually allowed him to break free, but I can tell his devotion to his bitch that he hasn't even confessed to yet is going to aggravate me. I dig Senku because of the douche-chilling way he comes up with arbitrary calculations or odds of things happening. He should do something about his sour cream and onion hair though. Also I want to see Tsukasa break more stone humans. It's hilarious.
I wouldn't go so far with your criticisms but I totally agree that it's weird how much hype it's gotten when it's a fairly average show with an interesting premise but meh characters. It's probably Crustyroll is to blame for the false hype because they got their hands on the western licence or whatever.
That's why it's better to sail the high seas instead.
-> average rating
-> average popularity
-> "incredibly overrated"
????????
what are you even talking about? dr. stone is the most watched show this season by every metric i've seen including mal and here. it's also the second highest rated show this season on here. i don't know what world you live in where top = average.
"most watched seasonal in a season full of trash"
you really got me there
dude that isn't a gotcha. it wasn't a bait and switch. you were literally just wrong. you did it all on your own. you can't say something is average popularity when it is the most popular show this season. you also can't say it's an average rating when it is 8.2 on mal. it is ~350 on both most popular and highest rated shows OF ALL TIME. Even if you claim that the bottom 75 percent should be removed due to it being old or whatever it is still in the top ~14 percent of anime ever made. and that's with an incredibly conservative assumption that mal only has 10k anime which is probably undershooting it.
https://i.redd.it/a3sxw6irp9f21.png here's a graph showing average rating distribution. you will notice that ratings above 8 take of a very small portion of that graph. definitely not "average".
like i literally don't even know how you can defend your position.
second of all the season isn't full of trash. vinland saga is amazing and fire force is popular as well.
@xrishox All I read there was "I saw good ratings and numbers on a past its prime, meaningless anime site and so I copied that now useless information."
If it's MAL, it's hot garbage. Including their information. No argument you make will prove [technically me, but might as well be everyone] otherwise.
you can like or not like mal all you want but at the end of the day it is both the largest dataset and the most heavily analyzed dataset. you not liking mal doesn't change that (and it is totally irrelevant).
it has decent viewership in a season where there's barely anything else to watch
mal ratings are generally heavily inflated when a show is airing, you could not pay me to take them seriously
"vinland saga is amazing and fire force is popular as well."
wow you could name a whole 2 other shows, this season is stacked
speaking of fire force, it's just slightly behind dr. stone in popularity and rating, can we call that overrated too?
if you want to know what overrated actually looks like, pay more attention to boku no hero
The show is extremely overrated and there is not much that is special about it. I know why the protagonist might be seen as an interesting character to some people, but actually is not remarkable at all. I heard the manga is great for its art, but the characters seems so flat and annoying, in a way. No one has chances for development, the science one will stick with the science, the endurance one will stick with his annoying sounds and so on. I really wanted a greater start. The potential is there, the overall vibe is still nice, but there is nothing that intrigued me enough to keep me watching the show every week. I like the idea of rebuilding the civilization, but that's all. That's what we get when we are watching a shounen and we are expecting a seinen, eh?
First, I dropped this series on the first episode and the thing that bothered me the most is that how can all those petrified humans still be in plain sight? It's been 3000 years and the environment has changed considerably. Those stone people should have been buried deep under the ground. The dialogue is cheesy and cringy and there's a bunched of other things I don't like about it and preferred to forget. My brother recommended this series to me and it seems to be a popular anime and so I've been looking forward to it but i just can't watch it. I'm so jealous of the people who were able to enjoy it. :(
