The last bout between Miko and Tick Tock Man, evolved into an alien sentiment, the last stage hangs in the balance.
Against the giant, Miko having Cthulhu at her very control with the Neo Geo controller joystick, with the very setting that's exactly the rhetoric of SNK's King of the Monsters game, it's truly a fight to the very end being the only player holding the hopes of humanity (or rather, her friendship with Kanna) in her hands.
All Hunter Joe was here for, is the total act like an onmyoji to subdue Tick Tock Man, which he and Kei do the aid alright. And even then, Cthulhu had her fun's worth together with Miko, which when all is said and done, the real Mayu waking up from her slumber, and the world reverts back to normal, not without the same group of players living a better life, as much as Kei's time at Megalox omes to an end, and both Miko and Mayu are back to having fun livestreaming together again.
Honestly, quite a rushed ending for an original series. A decent attempt by CyGames, but this is clearly no Apocalypse Hotel (from last season)
Even though I think Miko was a good character and the Lovecraftian creatures were interesting, the show ended up being below average.
Not only was the ending rushed, but it also felt like throughout the series many plot ideas and side characters were simply forgotten or cut off with a quick “oh well… now let’s move on to the next episode.”
The show definitely improved after a rough first episode, but I feel it never really reached its full potential.
Still, if a second season ever happens, I’d definitely give it a try!
Gonna just paste what I wrote for my tumblr here with some minor edits.
First TV anime of the season to end. My verdict? This was fine! Not great, not awful. It was fine. When the show started I said something to the effect of, if you can't pull off "good," "weird" is a solid second thing to aim for. I think maybe more than I expected, Necronomico is a great example of that. This is a show that has much less to say than it thinks it does, has generally messy and unfocused characterization, and its core conceits are all just generally kind of stupid. But it was largely entertaining week to week just off of novelty and audacity, and I think that's worth something. This is a truly textbook Seasonal Anime, capital S, capital A. I cannot imagine anyone remembering this aired by this time next year, except maybe because of the ChatGPT subs controversy when the first episode dropped.
About the final episode, I will say that I think any finale in which the main character gets to pilot her girlfriend, grown to kaiju size for the sake of a fighting game match, is an at least solid one. I also like that, perhaps intentionally but perhaps not, the game Nyarlathotep---sorry, Tick Tock Man---comes up with seems kind of shitty. Everyone loves fighting games where you have to button mash so hard your fingers bleed, right? I also really appreciated the gag where Miko somehow magics up a proper fight stick after being frustrated with the gamepad. Also the symbol sealing thing felt like a missed opportunity to incorporate the Yellow Sign into the show. That would've been a fun gag.
The epilogue was....honestly a little much. I appreciated seeing Miko reunited with her girlfriend, and the hints that Cthulu might still be in there (and a similar hint with Gua's host streamer) are fun and tantalizing if they ever decide they want to follow this show up. (Frankly, it seems very unlikely that this show did/is doing well enough to warrant that, but I wouldn't mind being proven wrong. I think the actual IP is owned by Cygames, so maybe they don't care about that.) But I really had no desire to see most of the other characters again; the mangaka, the actress, etc. are just not memorable and I think if we really felt the need to establish that they were still alive, a simple montage of a couple seconds tops would've sufficed just fine. I'm also a little mad they never killed Eita, he really seemed like he was asking for it and if they do make more of this, I simply refuse to buy into any attempted redemption arc. Try harder, man.
In any case, yeah. A solidly decent show that I will probably think about only occasionally for the remainder of my life. Hardly the worst thing I've ever seen, but definitely in the bottom third or so of anime i've seen this year. I really liked Cthulu, and that's probably the most credit I can give it.
I ended up giving it a 5/10, myself. This is like a textbook down-the-middle 5 to me. Has some high points and some low points and they all kinda come out in the wash, but at least I don't feel like it wasted my time. Eh!
The Yuri bits were all this show had me slightly interested with, it obviously ended up being a huge nothing burger anyways though lol.
Not to mention that the biggest asshole in the series did not get the punishment he deserved, pisses me off.
The premise itself was actually quite interesting, but the characters were extremely dumb and one dimensional.
The saddest point for me was how the games and stakes became less and less important as the show kept going. Many plot points were just convenient for the story and were never properly explored, the most infuriating kind of plot armor.
My goat Kanna was the reason I managed to finish this tbh.
