Bernie didn’t get punched in the face or mind wiped, which was what I was hoping for, but the resolution to his and Monica’s situation was still very satisfying. Lana sticking up for her and once again being the true bestie that she is to Monica was really sweet. I honestly thought she was going to punch him and break those dumb glasses. More importantly, Monica stood up for Lana and bravely told Bernie off as well. I love her growth as a character so much.
Monica saving Bernie’s life was nice as well, and him figuring out why she was actually at the academy and covering for her was also good progression in the story. Him admitting to himself that she’s a bad ass and he’s plainly average was so satisfying. I’m interested to see how he comes in later in the story.
The chess scene with Claudia and the boy she likes whose name escapes me right now was adorable as well.
Bernie was giving pretty strong narcissistic abuser vibes this episode, which was kind of triggering for me. Difficult episode to watch, tbh. I really don't want the show to do any Bernie apologetics.
Yeah, i do agree that the story is currently leaning more in the direction of a redemption arc, but i also think the author is ...ambitious if they think they can pull an endeavor.
for a convincing redemption you always need to convince both the characters and the audience, and the latter is alot more likely to forgive mass murderers then bullies and abusers, simply because the hate/disgust they feel for them is alot more visceral.
if they want to write a redemption arc its gonna be a slow and grueling one, not a "oops i was away for an arc and now im a better person"
that being said, the quality of the character writing thus far has been the shows strongest point, so im not saying its impossible.

Monica owning the chess tournament was no shock, but the marriage proposal was everything else. Perfect timing from the prince and Ashley dragging out that chess lunatic and honestly, you can see they both have a crush on her lol. Bernie is still pushing my patience, almost making Monica cry 2 weeks straight. Lana showing up at the last second reminded us why she’s the ultimate second-best girl and the friend Monica could never do without.
Bernie’s inflated ego blinds him to his own worthlessness compared to Monica, yet she still strives for his recognition. The dragon infiltrator incident gave him a tiny shred of redemption even though Monica did all the heavy lifting, useless nerd that he is. At least he covered for her, which is nothing more than the bare minimum after all the bullshit he’s thrown at her over the past 2 weeks. That final moment with Claudia and her fiancé sums up perfectly how unlucky and lucky this bastard's life really is lmao
Monica’s smile and her happiness must always be protected and she should never cry for anyone.
Totally valid Monica crashout
pretty boring solution to the conflict between the 2. As if the writer can't think of a good solution so decided to use some deus ex machina way of solving it... Legit would've been a better episode had their differences been settled on the chess board, perhaps communication through how they are playing? We all know that's too complicated of a concept for this though.
Best part of this episode is that we get to see Monica being super cute again... but that's pretty much it.

i do hope that isnt just the end of their character conflict.
Bernie has ..issues, to say the least, so his continual development could make for an interesting character , but "oh you saved me so now im not a narcissist anymore" is both bad character arc and kills all his future potential as a character.
I don't think this is a resolution between the two at all. Bernie is using this as an opportunity to have control over Monica, he 'saved' her here, he knows her identity, he can feel like Monica needs him again. Bernie still sucks and Monica isn't dumb enough to think that Bernie has "forgiven" her or whatever, not that she did anything needing forgiving.
Legit would've been a better episode had their differences been settled on the chess board, perhaps communication through how they are playing?
That actually happened in the novel though. The chess tournament didn't got canceled, and Monica completely destroyed Bernie. Bernie wanted to use the chess game to make Monica pay attention to him, but she completely stopped acknowledging him. The novel made it clear that Bernie's existence stopped mattering to Monica through the game, and it drove the narcissist into a panic.
The other characters called Monica's game "merciless". Bernie tried to hold on, but to everyone who played chess it was clear that he was outmatched. It was only through this that Bernie finally admitted the "In truth I'd always known she was a genius, and I'm just an ordinary person." dialogue. It only happened because he was completely demolished, and not because he was being saved.
For some reason, the anime is hell bent in making Bernie a sympathetic "awkward" character. Anyone who knows what an abuser is, can easily tell what he's doing and why he's doing it though.
Any bit of sympathy that I still had for Bernie evaporated away the moment he got weird about invading Monica's personal space. And then he spouted all that narcissistic bullshit about Monica being manipulative, when the truth is that social skills and guitar magic skills are different things, and one can be good at one without being good at the other.
love how its not "oh no the insults are getting to her" but all of monicas distress comes from realising that thats how bernie sees her.
what she overcomes isnt his hurtful words but her desire to be liked by him.
And its also the most hurtful thing she could hit bernie with. For someone so narcisstic, this cuts way deeper then her starting to hate him back.
the fight magic animation is gorgeous as always. glad to see more of it. the way monicas magic is animated much more "freestyle"(and frankly, higher quality too) then the rest of the casts is an excellent way to integrate the magic system into the animation.it looks like shes manually weaving each little piece of her spell.
(though im a bit worried about the fight dialogue going the whole "what you dont need to chant surprised pikachu face route again. i get that silent casting is kind of the gimmick of the series, but its only the second time its happened and im already getting tired of it)
also arent there any other people to assassinate in this kingdom? xD why is everyone and their dog going after prince felix. Surely asssassinating one potential heir of an rival kingdom isnt that important when the sucession hasnt even been determined yet. at that point youre just helping them avoid a succession criris.
(in other words i want to know more about the politics. why is it that felix, despite having little to no power currently, is such a high-priority target for everyone, either to protect or attack?)
Felix's grandfather, Duke Cockfart (Clockford but I call him that) wants to go to war with the Empire, which is the other major power in the area, big country that borders Landor (the small country which helped Casey's family).
Also because Felix is the "perfect prince", he's seen as the most likely heir to the throne. However, Felix does everything Duke Cockfart tells him to. So if Felix inherits, war is guaranteed. In contrast, the first prince doesn't want to go to war. The current emperor doesn't want to go to war either.
Duke Cockfart is pretty much hated by everyone, his allies only fear him, they're not with him out of loyalty so not even they would mind too much if his influence weakened. Thus almost everyone can find a reason or two for wanting Felix dead who'd be his puppet upon becoming king.
She beat him so hard he fell in love with her... "( – ⌓ – )
Thankfully Felix and Cyril are there to protect her
Seriously, can someone just bash this guy's face in.
YESSS, ABSOLUTE W BY LANA ONCE AGAIN!!
I'm so happy that Monica is able to stand up for herself and for Lana during this situation! Lana being there gave her the courage to say how she really feels.
Let him have it, Lana!!!
So did this guy just invade the chess tournament by himself? If their goal is to assasinate Felix then I feel like they would've brought more people in.
Also, this guy was weak as hell lmao! I know Monica is strong but the spell she used didn't seem that strong. He just got one spell K.O'd and that's that..
I won't lie, I wasn't the biggest fan of this conclusion. It felt a bit too cliché with Bernie covering up for Monica at the end for saving his life. It would've been nice to see him get humbled by Monica. I also wanted Bernie to see just how many more people truly care about Monica now. He tried to push her down and make her revere him as the only one she needed but it didn't work out that way. She's surrounded by genuinely good people now and she's in a much more healthy mental state.
These two are so cute hahahah. I'm glad they added a little scene like this in xD.

Another great episode. Although it does suck that the chess match between Monica and Bernie is omitted here. Everything else was nearly perfect to the novel. Lana's sick burn nearly destroyed Bernie. Monica looks like a different person entirely with her make up and hair like that. Bernie isn't totally a bad guy anymore, or at lest not somebody who is going to make Monica cry.
