Now that it's been released, what do you all think. I thought it was pretty good for his first endeavor into anime, especially just a 18 minute special. The music in the anime was so good and distinctive too. I didn't see the twist coming but I lowkey should have expected it. I can't wait to see if this evolves into a longer series.
P.S. He is selling merch at this link.
I liked it but it was way to short and way too much happening for everything to really sink in properly. Also little sad that the premier was only the english dub.
yeah I was wondering where I could find the japanese edition, since its so short I don't rewatching it once I find it. The english voices were pretty good tho
The Japanese dub can be found in the settings of the original vid here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V-P3HWXGYm4
The thread "So what did you think about it in the end ?" and its comments have been merged into this thread.

I'll be honest, for what it wanted to tell, it's way too short.
Since characters don't talk much and there isn't much narration either I was lost for a good 90% of it as to what are the characters even doing or why. The synopsis gives way more information and context than the actual film. Then comes the realization of the actual timeline but it ends 1 minute later and I was like "wait, that's it" ?
In my opinion it had great potential, so either Garnt should have gone for a full movie with this story or just simplify it so it doesn't just end abruptly and you just feel lost wondering or trying to piece things together while you're watching.
Garnt should have gone for a full movie
Honestly with the project as it was , it was AMAZING
taking into account it was entirely self funded by a single person , i feel like this is MUCH MUCH better than most individual projects
and imo on the information/lore you're lost on , i feel like it was more of an atmospheric anime , plus it is kinda hard to miss the story since it is rather simple
Keep the 2nd part of the sentence please :'). "With this story", don't get me wrong the animation is good but for what he wanted to tell, or at least it's how I feel it, it's way too rushed and short. Yes it's atmospheric in a way but the movie itself give absolutely 0 context as to what's happening. Even Shelter, if we talk about the scale of the project, has an intro actually explaining the song part.
Can't really tell about "being rushed" when all it come down to money, it is clear that he spend a lot of time and money on this and adding more to it would double or triple the cost which he probably can't afford, so it ended on those 20 minutes.
TheMinester, as some have said, self-funfed, indie creator on a limited budget with a 2 year deadline and lots of streams and events later. A first dip into production but alas, not supposed to be incredibly life changing and more of a test film. All this accrued was more of a conversation about the indie scene on my end. We need more indies, but also the ability to pull off longer films without being cut like Garnt. He is one of the first, an example to what could be possible, and it shows that there is always room for more. He was the first step, now, the rest must be made.
He explained why he couldn't make it longer. It was entirely self funded and if he wanted to get additional funding elsewhere he wouldn't have full creative control of the story he wanted to tell. He said he already blew like several hundreds of thousands to make this as is. Seriously impressive considering the budget and runtime.
OK, now I feel like my comment doesn't give exactly what i want to say.
I have nothing against the length and fully understand the self fund and the size of it. My problem is, that the story he wanted to tell is completely oversized for the scale of what he wanted or could accomplish with what he had.
So it's not about being impressive as a realization, rather the story just doesn't fit the realization, it's just not suited for what we got.
So as I said he should have adapted the story to what he could do. And that has nothing to do with the cost. It's just like thesis explained in minutes, you're given 3 minutes to tell what usually take 2 hours, so you have to make it fit so anyone can understand the full thing. Imo, Garnt had a 2h story in his head but failed to put it in an 18 minutes video.
Bit unsatisfied with the morale of the story. Turns out, working in an office is worse than living in a fantastical realm - something the audience already knew.
I enjoyed the twist, but expected either a parallel or difference in their paths. Instead, they both just chose the cooler of the two realms. And for similar reasons.
idk I feel like what I got out of the story was that it was a metaphor for being able to appreciate the foreign culture you are moving to, while appreciating your native culture as well.
I think your definitely onto to something, Garnt is originally from Thailand, however is born in the Uk, but is really invested into Japanese culture, hence why he made an anime in the first place.
Yeah exactly, i was pretty sure it was an extreme version of how Garnt feels. I did end up watching his livestream later and he said he based part of Rin’s character(if not all) on his wife’s story of coming from America to Japan too.
that's quite cool, i haven't watched the live stream yet but do hope we can see more of the background stuff, Rin was the highlight of the anime so does make sense
There should be a documentary about the film coming to his channel in a month so def will explain more of his influences
I don't think the story even had a moral. I think it's just a story about homesickness. Which it did successfully convey to me but could've been even better if we had more time.
We really need to see more of her day to day life. Ye, there are a lot of rough times in life, but it seemed that she has made some friends that she can hang out with, I don't think that her experience on Earth is just full of negatives.
We need reoccurring scenes that would remind her of home, while also using it as an opportunity to build up world building about Euthenia.
We really need a Full length movie man lol
I think it's also about allowing those you care about to pursue their dreams, even if doing so comes with risks.
Like the title says, the "borderline of adulthood" and "finding a place where you truly belong". So, about supporting those you care about in finding their own place in the world, instead of holding them back, even if you do so because you simply want to keep them safe.
it definitely has a Morale. It's about finding your home, The guy found his home when he ventured into the other world and met Rin. Rin tried to do that same but found out that she will only find her home back in her own world. The Morale of the story is that you just because you grew up in one household doesn't mean that's the home you will forever confide in, it's either you find it in another place or realize that the place that ur living in right now or grew up in is THE Home for you.
What about the old lady? She chose our world in the end. I think the morale is more "try other cultures, because you MAY love them, or you'll at least have a better outlook on life.". Rin tried Earth, liked some of it, but in the end she came back but was still better for it! It wasn't a waste of her time at all.
Like everyone else, I thought it was a bit short, but I also think a variation of the timeline/story could have been made to better deliver the moral in the 17-18 minutes that he had. Another note is that this presumably cost like 350k(saw that number floating around his Twitch chat). I honestly think the cost and the project as a whole were more revealing to the anime industry behind the project than anything else.
It's a really unfair comparison but Dandadan's first episode is a great example of introducing characters and making a small story in just 20 minutes. I'm not talking about budget, just writing and pacing. There was a lot of time "wasted" in cinematic shots where some dialogue and exposition could've fit in to make the story more robust.
As a 22 year old dude who is still fairly new to this adult stuff, I genuinely loved it. Interesting isekai world concept, relatable story; but was let down by the length. It's very obvious that a lot of things has been cut out due to budget constraints. According to him, this was supposed to be a 30 - 40 minute long film.
The story needs to explore more about the world and it's culture. Because that's the most interesting part of Baan for me.
The characters definitely needed more time to develop, especially Rin starting her adult life far away from her home and how it gradually affects her.
Garnt acknowledges that the length is the biggest criticism of the anime, which is very true. It can't be helped, It has a very tight budget.
I hope the companies that he mentioned hours ago find this successful enough. Who knows, maybe we could have a full length hour or two, long Movie of Baan. Because, I definitely need more. I love it, but it's very incomplete.
It really had so much potential, but the 18 minutes runtime didn't build enough connection to the viewers and actual buildup and learn about the world, overall the mythology is interesting enough, but yeah the story was too fast and you might need to rewatch to actually understand it a little bit
It's kind of incomplete, but tight budget as a content creator is being underestimated a lot, so yeah, I'm gonna be looking forward for more Gigguk project if he makes another one, one day.
It's kind of frustrating because I feel a bit cheated by the trailer. I know, that's how trailers should work – packed with emotions, dynamic. But this time, it was too much of a contrast. The emotions from the trailer got so blurred when stretched to 15 minutes, almost non-existent. Trailer 8/10. Anime 5/10.
The twist regarding the timeline was spoiled a bit by showing the same woman interacting with Daichi and then with Rin, except she was pregnant and in Japan. My main gripe with the story I think is the fact that it doesn't make much sense why Daichi (an outsider camping in the fantasy world) would get guardianship of Rin after her parents died. Also, it feels like Daichi's relationship with his parents was skimmed over completely - I guess Rin delivered a message to them from Daichi at the end? If the story was about homesickness, then what about Daichi's side? It seems like he just peaced out quite abruptly and then stayed in the fantasy world for good.
So I can definitely see where Garnt had to cut down on the story to make it all fit into this short length. And even then, they had to rely a lot on implying things, instead of explicitly saying them or showing them.
Overall, Euthania seemed interesting, the show was very pretty, and it sounded great, but it did not deliver any emotional impact. I'm hesitant to judge Garnt's writing abilities based on this, since he was so constrained, but the script was definitely the weakest part of the production.
I thought this was great, which surprised me. For the amount of time they had, I think they did as well as anyone could've. I understood most of what was happening and I think the message got across to me pretty well. Aside from the actual story, the vibe and music conveyed quite a lot as well, which helped.
I do think more world building and character development would definitely have been nice. It did end up being more of a concept, but I recognize the constraints prevented anything more and think they did great in spite of it.
Visuals were good. I love how the Naga looks and moves.
Music was probably the best part. Kevin knocked it out of the park. So beautiful. It really elevated the whole thing.
I'm fine with short films so I'm not going to say this didn't have something worth saying in 17 minutes. The concept of realizing where home is and where you fit into the world is a good message that clearly stems from Garnt's lived experience. Both sides of the portal were decently well-realized and I felt there was something to latch onto with the characters.
What I think it really lacked was punch. Aside from the moment where she's escaping with the egg, the film felt like it was really sort of running through the motions on a decently done script. I could have done with much more directorial flare to make us pay attention to certain elements over others. Rin's arc is sweet and all but I never really felt that much of a tug from her - resistance or friction that would keep her from going back. I think we needed some kind of scene loaded with more passionate emotion to give us a sense of what she was feeling inside.
The moments of breathing in the world were good. I really liked settling into that sense of place in a way that left me positively wanting more, not feeling that it was underdeveloped. I think the whole production staff did a good job creating something unique and I think that shouldn't be lost even if the storytelling is a bit by-numbers.
Given how it came together its impressive it even exists.
If we judge it like we would any anime, it's amateurish and mediocre.
I've seen it in English, unfortunately these VAs don't work for me. Music oversaturates the time we spend with the characters and gets annoying.
Animation and general world building is also meh, could go in detail about a lot of things.
Story wise, hard to tell a story in such a short time frame, so I wont really comment on that.
idk, me personally, i had my expectations pretty low considering the studio is new and nobody had any experience. When i seen the thumbnail i was geniunly impressed by the quality, from my pov i think the animation is perfect, the va's have blew me away and the music was their to support the characters well. Don't get me wrong, i didn't understand everything so i rewatched it. Maybe i am a little bias as i do like Garnt quite a lot but i think the we doesn't include everyone
So apparently this seems controversial, but I think it was pretty good and concluded the story it wanted to tell pretty effectively. I didn't need everything explained to me, because tons of implications made me think about how the world might work (And that makes it way more interesting). It's no different from the myriad of one of OVAs that explore their own original world, just to never be seen again. Idk maybe it's just because I prefer a ton of media where there isn't a lot of stuff explained to you.
I agree so much with this. Not being flat out told every part of the world (or even how a majority of it worked) was a stylistic choice, rather than one based on time constraints. Of course if this ends up being a bigger series, Garnt should further explore it more but I enjoyed being able to guess currently from the short
Considering somebody with no experience made this, i think Garnt did an amazing job, don't get me wrong, i didn't fully understand it at first however when i re watched it, it was even better, yes it was short but quality was prioritized. I think there's a solid foundation for another movie/episode to be written and produced

That's not how it suppose to work. We review and discuss about completed work and this piece as it is right now might look and sound good, but fails as competent story. It's just good concept nothing less nothing more. What exactly we should celebrate?
It's great that it was made, but that doesn't mean that by the very fact of its existence, it should somehow be treated better than any other anime or piece in general.
SPOILER-FREE REVIEW:
To be quite frank, it was nice seeing the individual qualities of the staff themselves, from the VA's, director and the music itself, especially considering it was a fully self-funded project. I am inclined to say that the message of this film is too much to sink in when you look at its length (18 minutes). It can also be found confusing on the first watch. With that said, not only is the animation surprisingly pleasing to watch, but the character and world design is well done in my opinion.
On the other hand, there is a possibility that the label of a "YouTuber" may also subconsciously affect many people's viewing experience of this short movie negatively, and as a result comparing this to something done by professional and famous studios would be unfair towards the amount of work put into it.
The Thai/South-East Asian mythology included in this anime complements the carefully designed atmosphere and music as well as the emotional moments. Overall, this anime can serve as an example to other people dreaming of realising something like this. Needless to say i enjoyed this and did not found it a hard watch by any means
I'm amazed at how good the world building was for such a short piece, the little twist in the middle of the film was quite nice.
It was a beautiful take on adulthood and the struggles that come with it. I got a little emotional around the end of it because I'd been feeling a little homesick lately, and the fact that I'm by myself at home until next week did not help this feeling of loneliness.
The Japanese dub was great!
For an 18 minute short it was incredible. Of course, it's not perfect by any means. Given the budget restrictions it's amazing what they could churn out in under 18 minutes. I was slightly touched by the film, but I did immediately think it should have been "3 episodes" or a 1 hour film to flesh out the characters properly and be able to convey the message in a more direct way, since a lot did happen in 15 minutes, especially Daichi needed more time. Still beautiful visuals and soundtrack, the writing was also well done and concise. I would consider it a success for what it was.
