What a nice way to end the first season of this show :3
Season started strong with the romance, wished they continued with that pacing.
Anyone know where to start in the manga? Glanced through the subreddit and didn't see anything indicating chapter count.
Also yeah I agree with most others, series definitely slumped after a while. First 5ish episodes had great production and then it just became so dull. Hopefully season 2 brings back the energy those first half dozen episodes had, and hopefully they don't get delayed into the next season like this one did.
So what do I think about it? Well back in late winter/early spring I was just about reach the most up-to-date chapter of Fragrant Flower and thought about what to read next, and for me that was between Shangri-La Frontier, which was about to finish its 2. season and Witch Watch, which I knew will get its 1. season in spring and I've seen it get new chapters on manga plus every now and then and was interested. Now, having watched the first season of Witch Watch, I have to say I'm glad I decided to read Shangri-La Frontier, do I think it's bad? Not really, the thing is, it's "Serious Plot" is pretty much boring, the only thing it does do decently well is comedy, but even in that area I have to say other anime that aired in the same time as this such as Detectives these days are crazy made me laugh way more often and much harder in its 12 ep run time compared to this with more then double the amount of episodes.
In the end I have to say for me it was a more or less mediocre experience that doesn't prompt me to read it's source material or even watch the 2. season for that matter, it doesn't tickle my brain to wanting to watch/read more of it the same Shan-Fro did for example. (7/10)
The quality roller coaster that is season one of Witch Watch has finally come to an end. Please keep your hands and arms inside the car at all times, and exit to your right side once the vehicle comes to a complete stop.
The ups were pretty high. In fact, when the series first began, it was an instant recommendation to anyone for me, but after a few more episodes, I got more pensive to recommend it. Overall I had fun, but it’s really the pacing that got me. Some bits just took way too long to manifest or overstayed their welcome.
There wasn’t much progress made either, which made things a bit frustrating at times. It’s not like a seldomly progressing story is always bad, after all, one of my all time favorite anime is Cowboy Bebop which has five, maybe six episodes out of 26 that actually pushes the overall story forward. However, Witch Watch didn’t have the quality of standalone episodes that Cowboy Bebop had that allowed it linger as much as it did.
With that, I just feel that too many tools were made and not all of them could be properly used. 4 familiars plus a witch as main characters is a lot to juggle. Then there’s other fun characters like the friend who has the paper spirit that assists her, as well as the fan manga duo that we hardly ever saw.
The most egregious of character neglect is with Nemu. There were so many times that she could have been better utilized. Like anytime the student council was featured could have been cut for more Nemu. The ten minutes Moi was talking about denim a couple episodes ago could have been something that progressed the Nemu and Keigo ship which was the most interesting part of this series. Speaking of, best episode of the season was definitely the one that focused on those two. I said it earlier somewhere else, but I’ll say again that I would die for a Nemu, Keigo, and Wolf love triangle romance anime spinoff.
This episode did Nemu injustice like the whole season had as well. Here watching the bad comedy bit and then saying a few words about Keigo to Wolf? Not enough. She is a witch and could have easily helped out in finding and capturing the guy that was going to cause Nico harm. The rest of the episode was just alright and didn’t feel like a finale. Especially since how the stakes were raised at the first half of the season finale, and in terms of storytelling, the season finale itself needs to raise the stakes even higher than they were at the halfway point.
Yes I’m a bit disappointed with the series because there’s so much potential. Because of that potential and maybe the off chance that both the Nico and Moi as well s the Nemu and Keigo romances will significantly progress, I’m still excited to check out the new season that was announced today.
This has managed to put a smile on my face nearly every ep, each ep has a story that was a 10 or close to it but then had another story which wasn't as strong. Pacing big issue, budget was sky high for sure so idk y they chose to butcher it like that. I wanted to see more of Keigo and Kanshi's comedy but it was cut short. Personally, it was a 9.4, side note, i advocate for dub but this dub is a crime to watch
I try to give dubs a fair and honest shot. I tried with episode 7 after I had already watched the sub and clicked through to a few parts but like, outside of some stilted line delivery my biggest issue was the entire audio balancing. I couldn't hear anyone all that well over the background music and sounds. It felt like a show the english studio got their hands on and didn't care to give it a proper chance.
Its been a while since i watched it but the dub was so lack luster, everything felt so forced. I prefer dubs usually, especially for bigger shows as thier va's are next level. I play hsr and really dislike it when events aren't dubbed but not much i can do. Reading in your head vs a va saying it is miles different but at least in anime you have a jp va (in the game, there is no sound when it isnt dubbed just a script)
I'm very happy and satisfied with this anime, the slice of life aspect was what caught my eye the most and it entertained me to the very end. It's one of those anime I'll pick up a random episode a few months from now just for the heck of it and enjoy it throughly once again, just like I did with Saiki Kusuo and Blend S. I can't wait for season 2
