Fujimoto Tatsuki 17-26 #06:
"Woke-Up-as-a-Girl Syndrome"
Studio: Studio Kafka
SB/ED: Terasawa Kazuaki 寺澤和晃
C.DESIGN/AD: Tokuoka Kouhei 徳岡紘平
Yep, definitely a Fujimoto work right here lol. Concept aside, Terasawa Kazuaki and Tokuoka Kouhei’s approach to this short is outstanding. It is by far the most visually striking one so far, with masterful composition, refined control over every frame, and brilliant use of light. The diagonal lighting and shadow work show clear confidence and mastery of color design. It is a shame this short is only 10 minutes. I would have loved a longer version.
Love that they use Renai Revolution 21 by Morning Musume for the ED. Certified Hood Classic.
Zip it. Literally.
I can’t lie, despite all the wack shit those losers were spouting, I lost it when LOVE Namida Iro by Aya Matsuura started playing. This scene was priceless lol
SO. FUCKING.GOOD
Cheeks, nosebleed, sister punch = K.O
This is such a grey concept. I just simply can't imagine myself in her shoes. And if I turned into a girl, would I be able to change in girls locker? Maybe not. Would I be able to change in boys lockers? Hell noo! Would I date the girl that I was already dating? Yes. Would I end up falling in love with some cool guy? Likely.
It's really hard to put myself in these situations because the answers to these questions are lowkey ambiguous and any of the stuff that I said yes to could turn into a no and vice versa. Being approached by guys to have sex is first very fucking gay and 2nd very creepy.
It's visually stunning and I really like the direction and style in this one.
I think this is the gayest way I've ever seen someone explore the concept of masculinity. The protagonist has feminine traits, and I don't mean excessive crying, but even when he woke up, I didn't feel a trace of masculinity in his room because of the feminine elements. The fact that he ultimately chooses to remain a boy proves that the story isn't about transgender people. Everything points to him being a woman, but he chooses the opposite. I think Fujimoto is trying to say that having some feminine qualities doesn't negate your masculinity; you're a man inside, and you should preserve that.
There's no need to break everything into boxes like this. It's a good episode that explores how gender expression isn't related to gender itself, it's not meant for trans people but it can resonate as well. I for one got a bit melancholic because i wish i could have gotten into my later childhood and teenage years by just surrounding me with the girly stuff i like, maybe gotten a girlfriend who wouldn't expect me to be a manly man and just be a friend as well as a lover. Instead i became boring and dissociative for a few years with no personality (and that didn't even stop me from also being harassed like in the episode for being atractive in a girly way lmao). What people don't get is that gender has absolutely nothing to do with all of this, just like the protag still saw himself as a man despite what everything else told him, i don't think i would ever have stayed as a man even if i found out manhood can be sensitive and girly all the same earlier in life.
It's difficult for me to agree with you when the protagonist's lover's brother says, "Are you a man or a woman? If you're a man, go after here. If you're a woman, stay and cry." If the author intended to challenge the idea you mentioned, he wouldn't have used this expression, which restricts gendered expression. There should have been a more conventional way of breaking the mold of using language. But ultimately, this is a story Fujimoto wrote when he was young, so none of our opinions might be correct. He might have written it because he thought it was an hot, funny, and strange idea?. Anyway, our interpretations are often different due to our different backgrounds. I come from a strict religious and cultural background and believe in gender binary, while you seem to be the complete opposite. I'm sorry you spent your childhood and adolescence in isolation. I hope you're doing better now.
This episode is an absolute masterpiece. The artstyle, the animation, the colors, the shading, the playfulness with concepts. The technical execution is insane.
But I also love the plot. Despite its goofiness and humor, it's one of the few anime productions that realistically shows what would happen if you turned into a girl. Instead of being just a joke and fan service, it shows the emotional problems that the protagonist faces.
I think trans people can relate to this, but I don't think the episode was made with them in mind.Fujimoto was more about how our external characteristics and society impose gender on us because we do not meet the expected norms. All the main features of the protagonist were female and now he has literally turned into a female, which makes him question being a man.But as a friend said, it's not what you see that counts, what matters is that you're a man inside, even abstract things like changing gender overnight shouldn't determine your masculinity. A masterpiece episode, I wish there was a whole anime of this.
