everything is in the title
I think that's for Recuts (as per the submission manual).
Recaps are only to be added if they are a recap movie from a series (e.g. TV Series, TV Short, OVA, or ONA).
So, this movie fits the description as it is a compilation of Shibuya Incident and the first two episodes of Culling Game
This has previously happened quite recently with:
wouldn't dan da dan: evil eye be added then by those rules? it's recap + new episodes of season 2 before it released
I believe those were theatrical debuts rather than recaps
I didn't watch Evil Eye but I watched First Encounter and it was just the first 3 episodes
Episodes 1-3 titled as DAN DA DAN: FIRST ENCOUNTER was pre-screened in advance in theaters on August 31, 2024 in Asia, September 7, 2024 in Europe and September 13, 2024 in North America. The regular TV broadcast began October 4, 2024.
Worldwide premiere of Episodes 1-3 titled as DAN DA DAN: EVIL EYE before the Japanese premiere was pre-screened in advance in theaters on June 6, 2025 in North America by GKIDS Films and June 7 and 8 in Europe by Piece of Magic Entertainment and Animation Digital Network.
Edit: I guess it does
i saw evil eye in theatres and the first 20 minutes were dedicated to recapping what happened in season 1
I can't find information on this. From the GKIDS official site, it states that
The DAN DA DAN: EVIL EYE theatrical event screens last season’s start of the EVIL EYE arc, along with the first three episodes of the new second season, in addition to an exclusive interview with series co-directors Fuga Yamashiro and Abel Gongora.
Was it a cumulative recap? Or just the events leading up to season 2?
Okay, I am back with more information from the submission manual so I'm mentioning everyone
The Dandadan movies are considered to be prescreenings and are ineligible (section here)
The following cases do not qualify to be submitted:
- Early screenings, even if they splice multiple episodes together.
The Demon Slayer compilation films are episodes spliced together, so they are ineligible
by this logic the bocci the rock recap movies should not be allowed on the site either since they don't have "A sufficient amount of new material"
They are considered to have a sufficient amount of new material (section)
A sufficient amount of new material will be generally defined as any of the following:
- A series that has a new opening credits and/or new ending credits, whether in animation or song, from a movie release to a TV/OVA/ONA release or the reverse.
Compilation film of Bocchi the Rock! featuring new animation intro footage
Compilation film of Bocchi the Rock! featuring new animation intro footage and additional scenes.
Recap movies have no requirement for new material.
The site also has differentiated between recuts and recaps. If they just put episodes together and cut op/ed from in between we consider that a recut.
The bocchi recaps are approximately 2 hours and 49 minutes. Factor out credits (i'm assuming.... 5 minutes each?) And you get 2 hours and 39 minutes.
The tv series is 12x24, factor out ed/op and you get 12x21 or about 4 hours and 10 minutes. Clearly a lot of content was modified or outright removed. It is a fundamentally different experience to watch it. They are recap movies like Madoka that split 2 movies for 1 cour.
Another factor, it is not uncommon for anime to have pre-releases. We historically would not change our pages to reflect a pre-screening, whether it was a limited release or a wide release.
Now things can also get fuzzy as some movies will mostly be a recap and then also have a tiny bit of original content. Some will a tiny bit of recap before functionally being a pre-release of episodes that are unmodified outside of removing op/ed. If something has 1 minute of recap and then episodes that are just the tv versions put together we would classify that closer to a pre-screening. That is typically how the site has treated many of these cash-grab theatrical releases of the start of a new season.
Obviously most things aren't just 1 minute of recap with 63 minutes of new episodes or 89 minutes recap and then 1 minute of new content so its always going to require making a judgement call based on what makes sense for a given scenario while also considering previous decisions.
I'm not commenting on the entry tagged on this forum thread or various other cash grab nonsense as I'm not a mod and don't care about those titles to opine on, however this should help clear up confusion multiple people have shown in this thread.
This movie was such a waste of time man. The fights were all butchered and overedited and they literally skipped over every cool scene from the Shibuya arc. I wish they had extended the runtime by another 30-40 mins so at least we would've gotten to see the fights better. The new episodes were good I guess but definitely not worth slogging through the first half for it
Do you need to watch this before the new season?
Absolutely do not watch this. The recap takes up the majority of the runtime, and its a really bad recap to boot, and then the episodes are purely better watched at home as they're fully the same and have super important text that shows up on screen... that goes away faster than any human could conceivably read it, which just felt horrible watching it in a cinema after the slog that was the recap.
