I honestly think my comment on this episode is "disappointment."
Let's start by saying that I fully understand the setting of the three stories. Yuki finds herself in a state of fear for the first time due to the fact that she has effectively lost and will be killed, all dictated by her state of mind and anxiety from the pre-game and from having poorly managed the entire match. Mishiro has continued the death games with the sole purpose of finding Yuki to get revenge/prove her superiority to her, but unfortunately finds herself facing an unworthy opponent who almost arouses pity. However, she knows full well that her fight with yuki is either now or perhaps never to be. It's not clear what's wrong with her, but she probably doesn't have much time left, and hence the idea of passing the baton to Riko, even the speech about the poison of the flowers and the metaphor that since I planted them it is as if I had killed the people who fell victim to them is very interesting, and precisely by giving the baton to Riko to kill Yuki (probably knowing that by now she would not have been able to do it due to her condition) takes on even more meaning, I will kill her through you... But it ends there, nothing is explored in depth.
And then we have Riko, a hollow character who finds hope in the only person who offers her a helping hand (for selfish reasons, certainly not out of compassion), but being a girl incapable of living without guidance, she lets herself be fooled by Yuki's words.
The problem, however, comes here: in this episode, everything is shown very quickly and without taking the right amount of time, in my opinion, even with just a few more introspective thoughts, ready to go and we have the massacre already occurred, i felt nothing, Azuma's story loses all its tragedy transposed in this way, because you know that you shouldn't care about these characters, the winning girls leaving, Yuki tied up (who knows why she shouldn't be killed, but perhaps it was Mishiro's order to then figure out if it was her or not), A pathetic fight, which is perhaps the part I liked the most because both are unstable, both mentally and physically. Mishiro had a clear idea of how the fight should go, but instead it turns out to be diametrically opposed. However, even here it lacks emotion, thought, and explanations, and the same goes for Riko. We know nothing about her except that she's empty and has robotic prosthetic limbs, and that she gets herself killed, even legitimately, by Yuki's deception. But all these stories lack bite, appeal, interest, pathos. It didn't engage me at all. I would have liked more introspection, more thoughts, the final list of names of fallen comrades I think has the same weight as reading the shopping list as far as I was interested, but instead it was all too fast-paced and empty. Some changes have been made compared to the novel, and I understand that, but I feel like a bit of something has been lost.
That said, the artistic direction is still very beautiful, but if I was enthusiastic before, now I'm starting to be dubious about the work itself.
Not really a fan of how the plot performed a lobotomy on Yuki for this particular game, or how the loli suddenly got super strength out of nowhere.
On the brigther side, rest in piss Mishiro, you won't be missed
In reality, we see that the loli was strong in the last episode, where we hear the noise in the background and some wadding in the water, making us understand that she mercilessly killed the girl who was next to her to bring the tags to Mishiro, but if it weren't for Yuki's words that call her a robot, and the clang sounds, there was no explanation for the fact that she has this super strength due to the prosthetic limbs
Brother, First of all calm down. no need to write such long comments. I completely understand your frustration because i am also a fellow anime lover and critique. But as you said yourself. This episode completely Sucked. The fighting, the reactions, the story, the enthusiasm the intent of killing. All gone. Like it never existed.
hahaha sorry for the long read, thanks for your patience
I enjoyed your comments on the episode quite a bit and think you did a fantastic job of explaining your thoughts! <3 personally I still enjoyed the episode but can totally see why you felt the way you did bc of how well thought out your comment was :))
Thank you so much. I know that when I express my thoughts, I sometimes go on and on, and these days, short text is more appreciated than several extra lines. However, I think works like this require more in-depth reflection, and perhaps it even shows how interested I am in the series. I also enjoy reading other people's thoughts, even those that disagree, to compare notes or perhaps see things from a different perspective.
Feel free to tell me about your experience if you like.
It really is sad that nowadays if something isn’t 3 sentences long you start getting the “I ain’t reading all that” type people. It did make me giggle that a so-called “critique”(lol) thinks two normal to long sized paragraphs is “too long of a comment” about a show…. Lmao.
But fr comments like yours are exactly what I enjoy so much about this site! Pls ignore the other person telling you to “calm down”. It’s so fun to see people talking about things they’re passionate about and why exactly they feel the way they do about, so yeah please don’t feel discouraged and keep expressing your thoughts however you want ^-^ <3. Also I completely agree about what you said regarding these types of shows needing more reflection as well. :)
Brother. I completely understand your point of view. I sometimes also write long essays on an episode discussion. It helps refresh your inner thoughts and makes me feel better. But just like you said most people don't like this. It's not like I didn't read his whole comment. I read it whole twice. And I understand his feelings. But you know, if it's not yourself doing it, it feels a bit off.
It feels like I missed a page, what even was the point of last weeks episode ending if it just gets completely skipped over and goes straight to the (anti)climax?
And we've not even seen enough of them interacting together for Mishiro and Yuki's feud to mean anything, nor do we actually get a proper backstory for Mishiro just little flashbacks. Riko was completely wasted.
Did also somewhat amuse me when Yuki went 'i'm covered in wounds' at the end and she looked completely clean lol, not a scratch on her except the hand bandages.
So yeah, while as normal it had some beautiful art and cool direction, it was a disappointing episode.
Another thing to note is the tracker, when questioning the agent as to whether or not it was a penalty for her waking up last, we don't get a concrete answer.
I'm also a little disappointed with the direction of this game, and the pressure finally getting to yuki that it was her 30th game (the wall of 30, a known killer of high winner players) wasn't pulled off as well as i had liked. A reason to complete 99 games still isn't present and my expectation for this show is dropping if her true reason to play is really because she doesn't care if she dies (although her fear was finally addressed this episode), unless of course i missed something then I'm happy for someone to correct me.
The pacing for this game was all over the place with episode 6 feeling like an attempt to get us to connect more with the people yuki had teamed up with in this game, but did hardly anything with it because of the time skip. Mishiro got the final showdown she wanted, but without more introspection or connection building, the fight falls flat like SirLuxor had mentioned.
This episode simply isn't effective in every way compared to the previous 2 games, and i can understand anyones frustration with how it was executed, a better question now is how yuki (and this show) will be written in these next few final episodes (or games). Yuki to me isn't developing as much as i had liked, or she simply isn't being written well at all.
This was definitely a disappointing episode. I would be interested in reading this game in the novels to see if it is much better, it feels like it would have to be.
The one thing I did like is Mishiro losing despite being given every possible advantage at the start of the "fight". Yuki had already been beaten up, restrained, had no weapon, and Mishiro got a lot of shots in before she even started fighting back. Good riddance, glad she's gone along with her loli robot. Ready to move on, hopefully what is probably the last game of the season is pretty good.
These last two episodes, and especially this one, completely ruin everything this anime had done right. It feels like they switched directors halfway through
tbf the music work and placement was quite different too so i wouldn't be surprised if they did have another director step in for these last two eps, that DOES happen sometimes
but also it's only 11 eps so it could've been an issue of trying to squeeze things in with the episodes they were allowed to work with or the director just simply fumbled this arc which can also happen, just hope the last arc brings us back
Tiring ep
Surprised that Yuki would be in the same situation that Mishiro was in the previous game that they were in together.
40 to 30 games, which one is it? We are just going back and forth. Kinda sped past that huh.
Mishiro really hates herself for losing to Yuki the first time.
Their squabble was quite intense, but damn Riko strong asl.
Riko did all that glaze just to get herself killed.
Yuki got sum insane plot armor tho.
Mishiro was a meh antagonist, but wasn't too bad.
6.5/10
Each game isn't chronological. The whole series isn't chronological. You are not watching this in a linear progression.
First death game we saw, the maid manor thing, 28th game.
Second game we saw, her 10th game, was the minefield with Mishiro.
We don't hear much specifics about the 27th or 29th game that are mentioned, where the 27th she did an interview after, and the 29th was the Dangerous Lab game and was a "wake up call" that she was placing herself in danger and needed to be careful.
30th Game, The bathhouse we just finished.
honestly the thing is that the pacing and the showing of the stuff was kinda all over the place, I mean after reading the LNs you do feel like some parts are missing and some context, but that still doesn't take away thet they have done a very good job at animating and showing what the characters are feeling in the moment.
Yeah, this game was a bit of a miss for me. I love the direction of the show, but I do think it didn't really work for this one.
It could've used a bit more time to explain anything, give us some time with the other girls (I remember 0 names and have no emotional attachment to them). They all seemingly got off-screened, Yuki got bonked by Riko apparently, the rules of the game weren't really clear either (like, the keycard thing was necessary, but then what about the boots? Why did Riko get shot if she had the boots?). The one case where we could've used a bit more of tell alongside the show. Hoping we get back on track for the next one!
Btw, Mishiro chomped 3 whole fingers off Yuki, wtf girl.
Riko gets shot by the turrets because Yuki is the target, she follows her because she provokes her and then yuki dodge to make Riko hit, the real question is why the turrets don't shoot her again and above all what absurd reflexes to avoid a bullet so close
I totally agree about remember 0 names about this arc
Anime only. I get your complaints, I do think expanding on the arc to be a couple more episodes would've helped this arc a lot, esp all of the new characters, cus they didn't feel memorable. But in some way, I don't think it wasn't that needed. The anime has been very consistent that with how much yuki goes through with these death games, the more she is processing the people she meets and goes through, the more it worses her mental state. Forgetting and not memorizing these people helps her keep going. Hence the whole timer in her room to think about those people before letting go. Mishiro is the exception cus how much she made an impact on yuki. IIRC at the end of the episode when yuki was saying all the names, I don't think she said Mishiro, Riko was the last name. Thats goes to show how much Mishiro "mattered" to her.
I do agree that this game was the worst out of all the games we've seen, but tbf this whole arc was really about the 30th game wall yuki faces and just how all the trauma is now affecting yuki. We see how yuki was reckless and made mistakes. And we see yuki finally break in her fight with mishiro, but it in that moment where we see yuki find her drive again.
Ngl I was expecting one of them during their fight, more mishiro, to confess their feelings to the other. They really were a psycho couple, esp with the wedding dress battle, and I'm assuming the weapons they were using in that wedding battle were crowbars with bone handles, but it very much looked like a pleasure device, really going hand with the couple pushing between mishiro and yuki. But thats what I thought.
With the Riko, yea she was clearly under developed, but i don't think that giving her exponential more time would've helped. Obviously giving her more screen time makes her more memorable, but I'm saying is that only a decent amount more would've helped before the impact flatlined. Esp since Mishiro expected to lose agianst yuki, prolly had something to do with her sickness (hoping we get an answer on that cus i think mishiro might be alive still or brought back in some way, but not counting on it.) Mishiro expecting to lose and passing her mission to riko, her reaction on that was the highlight of her character, i think her killing yuki still wouldn't have increased her impact. I don't think they could've added much to her character unless she went on a whole journey on self realization and not needing to depend on mishiro but they wouldn't be able to fit that.
But yea those are just my opinions, I still very much enjoy the anime, but I can see why people were not a fan of this episode. I hope we getting to see that dad character soon
I never read the source material. But unless I misunderstood something, all 3 games doesn't let all players survive by design. I wish we'll see at least one game that in theory allow all player survive until the end.
while this is like Saw that's not what these games are about, their about entertainment, they make these people team up in order to win BUT know that in the end SOMEBODY has to die, it's about making them choose who to trust, who lives and who dies, whether or not somebody sacrifices themselves or everybody comes to a conclusion, like her manager said at the end, it's a show and the audience wants to see their desperation, their fear and panic
I do agree with the sentiment that this episode, and whole Golden Bath Arc, was definitely the weakest part of the show so far. It's a shame, because I actually do see what they were going for and if they had just executed it better and given the arc more episodes or time in the oven, I think this could have been the best one yet. Its clear they wanted to have us being disoriented at what the game is, just like Yuki, but the lack of characterization of the newer characters along with the lackluster final confrontation between the two of them leaves the arc feeling a bit hollow and rushed. Which is a shame, cause the setup in episode 5 to this arc was great, and there really were some good ideas and scenes here! But, in the end, it was all a bit.. disappointing. But maybe that's part of the point? At the end of the day, we got through it, and even if it sucked, even if it was a shit game, we survived and they didn't. Isn't that a shame?
Felt like I stopped breathing at some points because of how tense the moments were. The worst part is that we watch Torture Princess immediately after so the emotional and atmospheric whiplash is crazy.
Anyways, I wasn't expecting the fight between Yuki and Mashiro to end in this game. One thing I really enjoyed about this game is seeing Yuki out of her depth and not having some semblance of control over the situation. Even in the game before this, she wasn't the leader but still understood what needed to be done unlike here. I knew I was in for a rough episode when the ending was played at the beginning.
not really sure why theres such a negative reception for this episode compared to any of the previous ones, i enjoyed this
people can't WATCH anime these days, they need to have everything spelt out for them.
people can't CRITIQUE anime these days, they need to enjoy everything they watch regardless of if they think it's good or not
????? You're allowed to not like a single episode/arc in a show dude-
Also the problem wasn't us needing to be "spoonfed" it was that they SHOVED THE FOOD DOWN OUR THROAT- this game sucked compared to the last two cause it was way more rushed while also trying to do more then the last two arcs at the same time- so it just ended up not fleshing out any of it's ideas as well as it could have and fell flat for alot of folks. This episode is not HORRIBLE or anything, just subpar, but still I wish it was better since the ideas it had were great and this arc would have been the best one yet if it just had more meat on it's bones.
Technically all the necessary information to understand this episode was put in here, but after how patient and methodical the previous games had been this one came across as a surprise and not the most interesting or fun one. I get that it can reflect Yuki's personal experience with this game that rattled her and left her confused and hurt, but there were still gaps that make even that explanation fall flat.
i enjoyed the last few eps, i quite liked the poolrooms aspect, but yeah it was rushed, also damn the tanned girl doesn't even get a close up of her corpse or ANYTHING, even though they set an emotional connection with her, i do think we needed an extra episode and a bit, more time to connect with the group and show Yuki fumbling, as well as more time to see Mishiro as more dangerous, and then a bit more here at the end to fully let the fight cook
hopefully the next arc (i assume the last one) will be better paced since we have 4 episodes to work with, unless they do two more mini arcs but i REALLY hope not... a small dent in a really great work i just hope that the last few eps make up for it and leave off on a high note
also DAMN LOLI GOT HANDS
and that GG was crazy work
Wow this game felt rushed, which is a shame. I get that it's appropriate for how out of it Yuki was this game, but still, this game had less time and so much more characters then either of the previous ones.
I found it hard to care about Riko at all (or any of the characters in this game outside of Yuki and Mishiro). I did feel Mishiro's frustration at this being her confrontation with Yuki though. What we got of Mishiro and Yuki's confrontation was good, but I just wish we got more out of this game to give a bigger impact to Yuki's failure and everyone on her "team" dying. I'm not sure how riko and her subplot with Mishiro's generic terminal illness could have been made more interesting to me though.
I still don't get it. So the whole reason that bunch of girls lost is they never checked super short wall made from bamboo sticks? Like there's a girl who researched and remembered the whole place up to perfection, but never checked what's behind the wall, seriously? Like you set up the base getting ready to attack and can't check the wall which can be easily checked with 2-3 people?
If they checked or basically had time to react to attack, you want to say this little girl fought so many people with knives, throwing stuff and everything and won? like knifes or stuff they're throwing can't damage any part of her body (including eyes, i guess?) or what? If yes, then i guess viewers would know immediately how it would turn out, no?
