And I wasn't wrong. I was screaming at my screen... Just nooooo.
I expected something crazy after last week... But not like this.
That smile can't be good.
We are so back.GREAT ADAPTATION OF HELL CAVE, SOLID ED EVEN IF VISUALS LACK A BIT, THEY COOKED
They skipped one death idk how I feel about it. Still awesome ep tho
Could you write which death in spoiler tags?
They didn't. What they're talking about is a web novel only death, so it doesn't exist in the light novels.
Ahhh thank you. I am still kinda curious if you could spoil me lol. Use tags though so people who still wanna read the WN won't get spoiled.
SPOILERS FOR THE WEB NOVEL VERSION OF THE EPISODE In the web novels, Subaru originally takes the left path and then dies by being burnt by the centaur-like monster before finally attempting the right path . It was the first time subaru burnt to death
jesus fucking christ bruh. i had my expectations high after people were saying this would be even worse than episode 15 but this was actually scary to look at. im glad the dark and gory rezero is back though
still i wouldnt necessarily call it better than episode 15 because that just has an unbeatable cinematic aspect to it but its definitely up there
This really took my breath away. I rarely even say this about any anime, but wow this episode I think is the best episode so far of the year.
The adaptation was very well done, and technically nothing was skipped. Idk why some people here are trying to downplay it. This was actual cinema. Maybe best 2nd episode of re zero ever. Maybe even the best one, but I need to leave it for a bit to fully know.
Lmao in the novel the reason why they choose to go to the right originally was because of a phrase from Kurapika from Hunter x hunter that subaru remembered, in the anime they changed it to Freud
aint no way, can you write up?
https://witchculttranslation.com/2019/06/18/arc-6-chapter-14-faith-built-atop-the-sand/
idk how to send pics but its in this chapter, the third section right after the second separation thingy
As always, I'm copying my thoughts from my Tumblr here!
Hahahahahahahahahahaha Jesus CHRIST
Re:Zero is a horror anime. That might be hard to remember after season 3 leaned so hard into pure action, but it bears refreshing. This show delights in putting Subaru through the most viscerally upsetting trauma it can imagine. And what makes it so effective isn't just how visceral the gore is; it's what it reveals about the characters whose guts are being spilled. Re:Zero's horror is about putting Subaru and his loved ones in situations that draw out their absolute worst, each bad end showing us their inner darkness pushed past the breaking point until it explodes and drags everyone down with them. Season 2's Kiss of Death episode is the high water mark for this: Emilia's descent into traumatized yandere mode haunts my nightmares to this day. But god damn if this episode doesn't give it a run for its money.
Structurally, there's nothing too complicated here: trapped under the dunes, Subaru, Ram and Anastasia take a wrong turn into a passage full of Witch Miasma and slowly succumb to its corrosive effects until they turn on each other. It's a simple trap, and once Subaru recovers from getting his head bitten off, it's a simple solution to just, you know, take a different path. But it's the atmosphere that makes their descent into madness so horrifying to watch. he way everyone's lanterns cast light and shadow across the dim caverns, the precise choices of what to illuminate and what to keep swallowed in darkness, it all shows you just enough to keep the scene geography in mind while making you constantly aware of the all-devouring black threatening to consume them at any moment. And when shit really starts going wrong, the harsh angles make everyone look like monsters rising out of the darkness, the light only serving to illuminate the terrifying beasts they've become. Frankly, this might be the best-looking episode of the entire series thus far! Which means I'm gonna have nightmares for weeks! Lovely!
But again, it's not just the visceral horror of seeing Anastasia get vivisected that left me choking on my own breath by the end. It's seeing how the miasma's maddening effects strip away everything good about these people we know and love, until nothing's left but their worst impulses. Subaru's vicious ego and self-delusion comes roaring back until he's even more of a violent misogynist than Regulus, choking Ram to death as he calls her a bitch over and over again. Ram herself loses every ounce of her compassion and selflessness until the endless barbs she throws at Subaru become pure cruelty. Anastasia's mercantile philosophy of practical solutions leads her to casually rip Ram's guts out if it means removing the biggest obstacle to forward progress. Or, since "Anastasia" isn't really in control right now, it could also reveal just how little the spirit inside her cares for anything but itself. Or both!
Either way, it's the first time we've seen our heroes turn on each other since... fuck, since the Roswaal Mansion arc, isn't it? All the way back in season 1? This is the first time in ten real years Subaru's death has been at the hands of the people he cares for. No wonder it's so upsetting! It's been so long since Rem's murder spree, we completely forgot what atrocities our allies are capable of. All it took was a little magic to strip away the parts of them that built them into better people. And once again, Subaru's left alone to bear the burden of this knowledge: the people he loves, the people he trusts with his life, have a darkness inside them that could destroy him at any moment. Fuck, even Patrasche is capable of monstrous actions! Turn her feral and she'd bite her beloved master's head clean off without a second thought! And Subaru just has to live with that now! Forever!
But that despair is only one half of the equation. Because what the rest of this episode proves is that these people are so much more than their worst impulses. Subaru at his worst might butcher her friends in a blind rage, but the consideration he shows to them in the aftermath, while definitely tryhard, shows just how damn much he cares about them. The episode doesn't make it explicit, but I suspect the guilt of what he did drives him to prove to himself that his friends matter too much for him to ever betray them like that again. And Ram, sweet, wonderful Ram, is more than willing to sacrifice herself for a sister she no longer remembers if it means the boy she loved stays alive. The same connection that drove her to loathing in one timeline now becomes the anchor that proves her inner kindness beyond a shadow of a doubt. And god, when Subaru's yelling at himself to stand up, to keep fighting, to save everyone he loves before they're splattered across the sands again, I just about broke down crying. He cares so goddamn much. He cares too much about everyone to let his darkest impulses define him. He will not become the monster the witch's magic brought out of him. Not as long as he still has tears to cry for everyone who'd give their life for him in turn.
Also, the design of that fire centaur thing? Fucking terrifying. Actual Dark Souls nightmare fuel. 10/10, no notes.
So yeah, this episode was fantastic. It's pure emotional horror like only Re:Zero can pull off, every bit as upsetting and uncomfortable and thematically rich as this show has ever been. This is the Re:Zero I fell in love with, folks. This is the show that made me see just how fucking amazing isekai has the potential to be. Season 3 was a worrying step down in a lot of ways, but my faith is fully restored now. We are, as the kids say, so fucking back. Now lets see what this poorly dressed sage has in store for the boy with a witch in his heart.
Amazing ep
Alr, so they are below the dunes.
We using Freud to choose directions, lol.
Patrasche might know sum abt this right path...
Ur right Ram, he is a damn pervert.
Bro crashing out for no reason.
Wtf Subaru moving crazy. He's really trying to kill Ram.
Wtf, Anastasia just killed Ram as well.
Ah yes, fish eyes in Re:Zero only mean one thing....
Lol, both of them were plotting just for Ram to half Anastasia up with her magic 🤣
Damn, Subaru really finished her with that slam...
BRO, even Patrasche has lost her mind. Why did she just laugh like that???
Nah, this decapitation death was insane.
That miasma was OC, wtf. Everyone lost their damn minds and killed each other so quickly. That right path was wrong asl.
Alr, let's try the left path this time.
Ik that wasn't good sand, but Subaru too gullible.
That monster centaur got a cool design, wow.
It can breathe fire magic from its belly 👀🔥
Great survival skills by Subaru and Ram.
Highkey thought he was gonna die again.
Interesting, why did Shaula save them if she was just shooting at them last ep? Then, she says "Found you" for Subaru, interesting.
Based off the title, Shaula is the sage or the keeper of the tower.
Shaula bad asl 👀
10/10
