Professor and head of the Manga Department, Faculty of Art at Kyoto University of Art and Design.
During his student days, he joined the doujin group "Mutant Pro" sponsored by Makoto Kanno and created the doujinshi "`Bokuju Sandoku". He made his debut as a manga artist in 1968 via COM magazine, published by Mushi Production. After graduating from high school, he became an assistant to Jouji Enami in 1969. In 1971, he joined Shotarou Ishinomori's Ishimori Productions and became an animation staff member.
In 1972, with the launch of Kodansha 's magazine "Otomodachi" he was in charge of serializing the manga version of Kamen Rider. Since then, he has mainly written tokusatsu-derived works, manga adaptations of TV animation, and children's manga.
In 2004, he was hired as a lecturer at Digital Arts Tokyo Department of Illustration and Manga. In 2009, he worked as a part-time lecturer at Takarazuka University. In April of 2011, he became a part-time lecturer in the Department of Manga, Faculty of Art, Kyoto University of Art and Design, associate professor in April 2013, professor in April 2014, and head of the department in April 2016.
