Yamazaki was involved in independent animation as a student at a film school, and after working as an assistant to a manga artist, he won the 99th YJ Monthly Newcomer's Award Encouragement Prize (Shueisha) for "Kappa no Takaramono" under the name Yamazaki Hiroshi. He made his debut with "Megane Kitan" in 1988, which won the 105th Honorable Mention Award.
