So, I am going to talk about Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou. First off I wanna say that this is one of the easiest 10/10s I will ever give. I feel like every single bit of YKK connected with me. The tone of it is very melancholic, but has a protagonist that feels like the strongest force of optimism I’ve seen. In the future, humanity is nearing its end as shown through the perspective of an android named Alpha who runs a small cafe. Through her day to day life and the people she bonds with, you get to see her contemplate the world around her. It’s quiet, with little happening, but the author uses this to highlight the small moments of life. The way these moments build up and become memories that form who you are. The people that you see grow older, and the way we all slowly change around each other. With so little to distract, and so much to reflect on, many chapters feel incredibly thought provoking. Even in a simple world approaching its end, Alpha finds beauty in many places. The art style may appear simple at times, but moments of beauty shine through constantly. I found myself saving so many pages purely because they are ones I want to remember. To see that this manga has such a small fanbase amazes me. If there is one thing I can say to you reading this, it's that you should absolutely give YKK a chance. To the people it connects with, I feel that the story is something you’ll remember forever. It has elements of sci-fi and mystery as you get to see the remaining world around Alpha show itself, and it's consistently interesting with the concepts it comes up with. It's a fairly slow manga, with a consistent pace throughout, but this just matches the tone perfectly. I got incredibly invested every time I sat down to read, and the simplicity made it feel very easy to quickly get through. As for Alpha as a character, she is so easy to love. Her perspective is incredibly personal, and you get to witness her grow as a person throughout. She is cheerful, and her excitement to explore the world around her makes every chapter feel fascinating. As she appreciates every aspect of life, you begin to do the same. She made me question how I understand myself, how I understand the people around me, and how I see the world around me. I feel like I will keep coming back to this story as many times as I want throughout my life and I will always get a lot from it. It is a complete masterpiece, I hope more people come to see how incredible it is.
If I had to pick a quote from the manga to describe it, I would chose this:
"There isn't as much difference between the seasons as there used to be; however, I think we take greater pleasure in those differences."
