Its characters begin on their path filled with glee and excitement, prepared to embark unto the grandest adventures of their lives! To then be met by the ardous realities that Gon's very own mother warned her son about, a harrowing darkness coming near. HxH will test your notions to what a shounen typically is, and subverts any and all expectations that your brain could come up with; truly beautiful stuff.
Like, imagine creating a power system that is not only visually stunning when in action, but also FUNDAMENTAL to character growth, themes and pay-offs—it's great! And picture the long/winding goal of it all, that of finding Gon's dad, to be written as one of many purposefully anti-climactic plot developments in the whole series—actually just pure genius, God bless you Togashi.
Oh, and of course, the music... the music. Besides the iconic opening and its incredible endings, the proper scoring for the show shines through with a delicate and sparing use of classical music. To not bore you with specifics, it utilized many pieces which I remembered from prior knowledge, and sometimes would use them in exciting ways I had never heard before, it sent shivers down my spine every single time, especially within the Chimera Ant arc.
The moment that personally planted the seed of this anime on my #1 placing had to be the first few episodes of the Chimera Ant arc, where some nasty business happens (if y'know what I mean). It all has to do with the art of subversion, and swiping the rug from under you. The show does this in an attempt to not only shock you, but shock you with reason; to demonstrate that what you're about to watch is like nothing you've seen beforehand. This seed was then cemented with the ending of the very same arc, which I won't get into spoiler-sakes, but it still makes me tear up till this day.
The Chimera Ant arc, although long in its crescendo, delivers by providing one of the most empathetic, gut-wrenching, and emotional moments I've gone through in any medium of entertainment—a rollercoaster of emotions! The other arcs were also great within their own respects, but this one hit me the hardest.
In summary, this series made me think about humanity, our lack of awareness, and most of all, to not carelessly go on a killing spree whenever I see an ant creeping up my wall! At the end of the day, with Hunter x Hunter, it's all about the journey—never the destination.
P.S.
I'd expand on much more regarding the anime with its incredible arcs, moments, and other things I love about it, but it's like three in the AM and umm, I hafta sleep lmao
