Howdy ladies and gents. It's been a while since I've been here on Anilist, but now I'm back! Anyone, something I've been thinking about ever since I started watching Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans, it's been reminding me of the one I used to watch when I was like 8 or 9, but I cant remember the name of it (I'm 17 now.) Anyone have an idea of what I'm talking about? Also I know there are A LOT of Gundam series. Could anyone please list them for me or link me a list with them in order? Been trying to find a list, but I haven't found any in order.
It depends which Gundam universe you plan on watching. For example, any of the Gundam shows are set in UC (Universal Century), AC (After Colony), CE (Cosmic Era), or AD (Anno Domini).
I'd probably start with Gundam 00. Seed and Seed Destiny were just okay...
Yeah, I out of all the ones I seen on the list Floozy sent me, Gundam 00 looks the best. In the universes though, say if I started in the 3rd universe, would I be lost from not watching the first two sets?
There isn't any real relationship between any universe. You can watch any show in one universe independent of another. However, once inside the universe (let's say UC), you should begin to watch shows from the UC era in order (I'm not sure but I believe the original Gundam with Amuro Ray is 1st in UC)
Explaining Gundam and it's various series is kinda difficult since Gundam as a franchise is stupidly structured. Basically, the first 3 TV series are a trilogy but from the 90s onward they're all self-contained and entirely watchable by themselves:
1979 Gundam
1985 Zeta Gundam
1986 Gundam ZZ
1993 Victory Gundam
1994 G Gundam
1995 Gundam Wing
1996 Gundam X
1999 Turn A Gundam
2002 Gundam SEED (and by extension SEED Destiny)
2007 Gundam 00 (+ 00 Season 2)
2011 Gundam AGE
2013 Gundam Build Fighters (+ Gundam Build Fighters TRY)
2014 Gundam: Reconguista in G
2015 Gundam: Iron Blooded Orphans
There's so many and all of them have pros and cons so in general I think its best to just watch whichever one seems most interesting. I'd guess the series you're thinking of would be 00 since that started about 8 years ago and is probably the most visually similar to IBO.
Hope this helps.

Let's go on a short adventure through the forum.

For the Alternative Universe? No. For the Universal Century? Yes.
Alternative Universe example:
And none of them have anything to do with each other. I suggest you start from Seed, just for the sake of moving you into Gundam AU series (But, I'd recommend 00 for last because, even though it has decent S1, S2 was rather disappointing and very not-Gundam-like).
If you want to be pandered by the crisp 2D mecha animation which you'll never get in AU, watch Mobile Suit Gundam (the first one). Yes, it has out-dated animation but please bear with it because It's the baseline for the next Gundam UC series. Then enjoy The Origin, Unicorn, and Thunderbolt. Or any other Gundam UC series.
Not an expert on Gundam, but I've had this same problem. Generally, it's agreed that you should start with the original Mobile Suit Gundam. From what I've seen so far, the writing is brilliant, though the animation, I admit, is incredibly stiff and rigid.
Alternately, you could try Iron Blooded Orphans on Netflix. Heard it's pretty great, and you don't have to know anything about Gundam to get into it.
You could try starting with Gundam Seed (I've been planning on checking that one out as well), which takes place in a continuity separate from the original series and thus doesn't require prior knowledge, but nobody can really agree on whether that one's good or not, and I've not yet seen an episode, so I won't attempt to evaluate there. I believe Gundam Wing has a similar situation to Seed, so you could conceivably start there.
Consensus seems to be 'stay away from Gundam Build Fighters'. It looks incredibly kiddie and silly compared to the rest of the franchise.
Gundam has the main timeline called Universal Century that started in the 1979 show, and stand alone series that you can watch in any order you want.
UC Series are:
Main:
Kidou Senshi Gundam Gyakushuu no Char
Kidou Senshi Gundam Senkou no Hathaway
Late UC (not really connected to the overall story, as they happen so much later):
Beyond UC (those series are set thousands of years after the previous, other than some references, they're entirely standalone):
UC Side stories:
Kidou Senshi Gundam 0080 Pocket no Naka no Sensou
Kidou Senshi Gundam Dai 08 MS Shotai
Kidou Senshi Gundam 0083 Stardust Memory
Kidou Senshi Gundam MS IGLOO Ichinen Sensou Hiwa
Kidou Senshi Gundam Thunderbolt
Kidou Senshi Gundam The Origin
Then you have the standalone series that happens on their own universes and require no knowledge from previous entries:
Kidou Senshi Gundam Tekketsu no Orphans
While at it, check the official Youtube channel as they have some series available for free.
The thread "Can i watch Gundam Seed first" and it's comments have been merged into this thread.
You can view the merged thread's body below:
You can definitely watch Seed on its own. It was many people's first Gundam.
As for your other questions, I haven't seen much of Seed, but I didn't like it. Seed's a really divisive series though. Some people love it and some hate it. I suggest watching it yourself to see which camp you fall into.
And most people go straight from Seed -> Seed Destiny, but there are some side OVAs and movies you can watch if you really like the series.
what do you mean?
Gundam is pretty straightforward, if you want to follow the main story watch 0079 -> zeta-> zz -> char's counterattack. Most other entries are just set in the same universe or in alternate universes. After 0079 you can watch some OVA like the 0080 for example but that is mostly your choice. If you want to watch the whole franchise going by release date will enable you to watch everything.
I found a timeline on how the story goes and if you would like to watch it in any order but like @Nightchild has said no real specific order.
Also the Gunpla Shows are not included since 0 timeline.
I have a list specifically for all of the gundams I've watched
Also Gundam doesn't really have a particular order of for story wise because each one is different from the other but I would recommend you start off with Gundam The Origin, that's when and where everything and all started before the wars. I would also recommend you start with Mobile Suit Gundam after Gundam The Origin
There's multiple spin-offs and alternatives, the ones I know you can watch in order are Gundam 00 because there's 2 seasons of that Gundam and Gundam Thunderbolt because there' about second season plus the other 2 are like alternatives but still the same story in a way
To me personally, all of the gundams I have on that list are good just because the animation is so appealing. but yea the only classic Gundam it's up to you if you want to watch from the very beginning to get an understanding on how the story of gundam developed in one story while the rest has their own alternate stories, some are movies and some are shorter than others
can this be called the right list????

CC (Correct Century) and RC (Reglid Century) are considered on the UC (Universal Century) Timeline, due to “Black History”
The main timeline is UC(universal century) in which main story line follows 079(original msg) -> gundam zeta -> gundam zz -> chars counter attack
Rest of the UC series happen between or after these series in timeline, and it's not necessary to watch them all, the one i would recommend from standalone ones.
Other than UC there are other timelines too but those don't have more than one or two series and there is no connectivity between them so you can start watching them in any order.
The one i would recommend from alternate timelines are.
Depends. There's 2 timelines, the long and most developed one, Universal Century, and what's known as Alternate Timeline Series, which collectively comprises a bunch of spinoffs that can span 2 50 episode seasons. Note that there are spinoffs related to UC but I'm only going to focus on the main series
So if you want to start this timeline:
Gundam Trilogy movies or the original Gundam series
Gundam Zeta
Gundam ZZ
Gundam Char's Counterattack (movie)
The above series and movies comprise the original main story, and really aside from ZZ mainly focus on 2 of the most iconic Gundam characters and the really interesting rivalry between then, Amuro Ray and Char Aznable. If you just want to see them and their story conclusion you can watch up until here. Note that ZZ doesn't actually feature them and I've seen others suggest to skip this if you're in a hurry, but imo ZZ is still important because of the technological improvements to Mobile Suit technology and also conclude other iconic characters' story, Haman Kahn and Kamille Bidan, who were introduced in Zeta.
Gundam Unicorn
Gundam Narrative (movie)
Gundam Unicorn is often considered a 'love letter to the Gundam franchise' and for good reason, it takes bits from all the above series and combines them in what would have a great ending to the Universal Century, but war does come back up later on in the timeline. Sawano, amazing animations, great characters and story, it's personally my favorite series but I am biased, there's definitely faults and I could understand people's criticisms. This is especially true in the ending, so Gundam Narrative sort of ties up the loose ends of Unicorn but as a movie alone it's not that impressive.
From here on, the UC series are not as closely related to each other, and are more standalone series or movies than anything else
Gundam F91 (movie)
Plot is extremely compressed, they took iirc a 50 episode series and compressed it into a movie. However the animation is easily among the best in the entire Gundam franchise.
Gundam Victory
The most depressing Gundam series, and that's an impressive title considering every Gundam series up until this point had its share of deaths and other horrors. It's not my favorite but it's not a bad series either, it has its moments but the deaths can get repetitive.
Gundam Reconguista in G
This one is a hit or miss. For me it was a miss, aside from some nice animation and waifus, the plot was compressed and things happen at an extremely fast pace. For others though it was a hit, since it did tackle some topics I haven't seen other UC series talk about and that could be because it's the most modern series. Others have suggested that its not made for the modern anime viewer because of its unusual pacing, but I personally don't see that since older series never suffered from being too fast, it was the opposite problem at times.
This turned out a lot longer than I thought, and I honestly didn't mention the spinoff series that the UC series, some of which are really great like Gundam Thunderbolt. But you'd only want to check those out if the main series piqued your interests.
