The first episode had me really excited for this anime honestly, but what is honestly going on? Why did they have to make the Gears playable characters by some weird cartoon-y species. It's just such an odd idea. I see what they're trying to do but like, this anime would of been so much better if the Gears where just a different race themselves. It just takes a lot away from the world the first episode established.
I'm gonna keep watching and keep an open mind, but I'm not hopeful.
Maybe they're trying to do something like 'The Matrix' but with a new twist? It definitely got way more interesting though. I think this layered setting will allow the series to explore various topics and themes that wouldn't have been possible with the type of story that was depicted in the first episode. Maybe with a setting like this one director Tachikawa is trying to explore things that he wasn't able to explore with 'Death Parade' which only had 12 episodes and was never continued. All in all, this feels like very interesting premise and I'm really looking forward to where they take this.
I didn't realize it's the same director from Death Parade. I did enjoy that anime so hopefully I'm pleasantly surprised by Deca-dence.
I guess the twist was so out there and came so early that it's really thrown me off. I'm not gonna completely write it off and call it shit since we're only two episodes in. I'll definitely keep an open mind and see how things progress :)
It's not The Matrix because The Matrix isn't real, it's a simulation. All of this is real life. It's just that some of the humans have a chip that has them be controlled by the aliens so that they can farm the oxyone, which they need to live. The whole story of the first episode is still there. There's just this other thing going on in the background too now.
Yes I understood that. I guess I worded it wrong but I was actually referring to the concept of living in a controlled reality instead of the actual setting of the movie. The reality in matrix is a controlled simulation whereas in this anime all the events take place in the real world. However, even if everything takes place in the real world it is still a controlled reality since the humans aren't aware of what's actually happening. Hence, "something like 'The Matrix' but with a new twist". Sorry for not making it clear.
I have a feeling that just episode 2 will be focused on the sort of world-within-a-world. I think this because the episode starts off in the past so the main point of episode 2 was to explain this new world we are learning about. There will probably be major plot points that go on in that world but I think and I hope that most of the show will be driven by the world of the humans. Overall I have really high hopes for this anime and I think it could be really good and interesting.
Yeah, I think the idea of this episode is to explain who Kaburagi really is and what his motivations are. He's apparently some kind of AI/program controlling a human-looking character? His real job is (at night) to retrieve people who figure out what his company is actually doing. But having seen how replaceable he and the other AI are to the company, he decides to help Natsume in the the hopes of... her maybe changing things, I guess? I suppose that is yet to be seen. But I assume that going forward, we'll see him train Natsume and presumably she will eventually find out what's really going on, and then we'll see what she does. So going forward, the show will likely go back to following Natsume and what she's doing in "the real world".
I bet the people that recommended Attack on Titan as being similar to this feel stupid now.
Anyways, this was a really interesting turn for the show, thought it was going to be just another apocalyptic type of show, but it really took me by surprise and wonder how everything will escalate from here on now. This episode definitely piqued my interest more in the show, but I could see on why people would feel not as interested anymore.
This episode was a huge exposition dump without any buildup to it. Basically like if in attack on titan, we knew what was in Eren's basement from the beginning of the series.
I think the point is that this wasn't meant to be a major twist halfway through the show - though they could certainly have done it that way. The show wants us to know what Kaburagi really is and what he's really doing. I assume the point of the show is to follow Natsume and see what she does in all this - especially once she finds out the truth.
To me, the problem is that they did this in episode 2. If you're not gonna go with the mystery route then why set up all these mysteries and plotlines on episode 1 only to throw them away on the next episode? I think that's what threw many people for a loop. It's fine if that's the type of show it's going to be. I'm just disappointed that an element of the show that I thought I would personally enjoy won't really be there anymore.
Reading everybody's thoughts in /global, I got people seemed to think that Deca-Dence is actually a game. My take on it is that in this world, videogames (suppositories' world) are reality and reality (humans' world) is a videogame. I know this doesn't make sense, but the anime itself is not making much sense to me, lol. Did anyone think this as well?
Deca Dence is a game for the aliens created for entertainment and controled by the System.
Humans realy do exist but they are unaware of the existence of beings controlling them, implanted chips in them etc, for aliens its just a game but for humans its real life.
Everything you just said is wrong. None of it is a game. The aliens are controlling some humans for the purpose of farming oxyone, which they need to survive. Most of the humans are still just normal humans though. The "game" part is really just a clean way for the corporation that runs that aliens to get all of them to farm the oxyone, most likely for sinister reasons that we'll learn later on. So they think it's a game, but it's not. Everything down on Earth(?) is real and actually happening. Those people's lives are completely separate from the alines. It's essentially the movie Avatar.
Deca-Dence itself is a game they confirmed it, Cyborgs are using Gear Avatars to play it, its real life for humans that live there.
Humans have chips implanted in them in order to control.
Ye for sure, the commercial voice was suspicious.
The planet is called Eurasia I think.
Some compared it to Matrix.
Nothing I said was wrong it really is a "game" for aliens but humans its real life
If it's real life, then it's not a game, just because some of the people involved don't realize what they're doing is real. I guess we're just arguing semantics though. It's less like The Matrix and more like the movie Avatar, since it's a race of people controlling the bodies of another race of people in order to reach their goals, and because it's not a simulation.
I was apprehensive with this "plot twist" when I saw some reactions and, until part of the beginning-opening, I was even more apprehensive
but oh gosh far from what I read, it's not a bad twist, in fact it is very promising
what many people missed, I think, the two "worlds" are not different realities (real to virtual), in fact they are part of the same world (both are real worlds), so nothing hybrid between SAO and SNK can be related lmao...
far from it ... the plot twist is delivered on a tray right at the beginning, and, I imagine the case is that this is not the only twist in this story, and I already have my theories about it
found interesting how throughout dialogues the "players" specifically refer to others as humans, not as npcs or other terms from games, which again confirms that it is not in a game but in a real world, probably in earth or something similar... so, following this line of reasoning, the players are not humans, in reality, we can imagine something along the same lines as matrix ?? alien-machines that have taken control of humanity or something
from that point I started to think about some questions
what is the real purpose of this experiment (if we can call it that)? clearly has something to do with "oxyone" which is probably oxygen or a similar compound (there is an oximeter brand that literally has that name ... if it has anything to do with it? I doubt it), but then, remembering that the creatures in this universe have blood full of oxyone comes the question if this is happening on planet Earth, or if it was the "players" that caused drastic changes on Earth in order to saturate the production of oxyone on the planet or something similar
anyway... I'm just theorizing
while the cartoonish-cute-gummy style of the "real" world as opposed to the gritty-realistic-style of the "virtual" world was a risky but not arbitrary choice, I imagine it is to aggravate and distinguish the realities and concepts from both realities
it's only two episodes so far, but I hope it surprises me more
I am most interested, I think, in the fact that it was mentioned that Deca-Dence is managed and created by the Solid Quake corporation... I wonder where they're gonna take that bit of information... especially considering Kaburagi's character. He goes to "work" in the human world, comes back to refuel ("sleep"), then goes right back to work.. which is definitely capitalist in its exploitation of workers... I think that mainly it's just gonna be that this corporation found a way to control human bodies for the purpose of capitalizing on them.. but it is also interesting that this system is exploitative in that the people partaking go out to "have fun" and collect oxyzone from the creatures... but to get into the "game" itself, you need to have oxyzone... and it made it seem like not everyone can afford the oxyzone, or at least not the more expensive version of it.
I think the premise is still very interesting and experimental (in a good way). At this point after watching sooo many series, this sort of twist is not really that surprising. We've had all kinds of reverse tags before. But in the way I saw it, episode 2 was generally hard to follow for some viewers, especially when unfamiliar with certain cuts. There were times I had to replay a scene because I wasn't sure if it was the flashback or the present. I could just be a viewer who is not observant enough but imo the direction (at least in this episode) is not quite smooth.
I have no complaints regarding the art - I think the cartooney style is decent. But I understand the style is not everyone's cup of tea. Despite that, it's still quite promising to me and I look forward to the next episode!
I'm still trying to process this. So the post-apocalyptic world is a game? What does that make the humans, are they real? Since Natsume doesn't have a chip I would assume so, but how do the worlds coexist/connect???
The Eurasia is real its like Earth to us.
Post apocaltyptic world is real, you saw the big bubble where Deca-Dence is placed and the whole mist that planet is surrounded with.
Humans are real but deemed as Bugs by the presumabely Aliens that took over this planet and capitalized it making it a "game" for entertainment.
Look there is a shot with a Space Ship above the planet
So basically the Aliens created the apocalypse on Earth to turn it into a game? Regulating the humans is a by-product of that, and the humans who have their bugs removed know the truth?
That's safe one assumption that could be true.
I think the humans that get their bug removed either die or idk become Mikey-like?
Cuz System processed the humans that were considered bugs, Kaburagi just went to the unconcious man and retrieved the chip(it i used to manage the humans) however, we don't know if they die after getting this removed, I think they do since well "World must get rid of bugs."
NONE of the Tankers, humans know the truth, Gears are Avatars created speficialy for this human like race to paricipate in that "Game"
I was thinking that maybe they die before, but when I consider Natsume, it might actually be after. It would explain why the system considers her dead if she doesn't have a chip.
They might be put unconscious, have their chip removed, and then something/someone kills them/extracts the body. In Natsume's case, there might have been interference before she was killed?
Preety sure Natsume was considred "dead" after her idk injury? That's my assumpsion honestly but I'm not sure.
Yes we still haven't seen how she "died" got her injury cuz well she has no arm.
Would be safe to assume that someone disposes of the body like how in the Alien's corporoation they become scrapped, I have no clue what that thing is my guess the "Brain" of the Aliens and since Chip is a valuable resource it is needed to be retrieved.
Everything is real. The struggle between the humans and the monsters is all real and happening separate to the alien plot. The twist is that some of the humans are being controlled via chip by the aliens in order to farm the oxyone, which they need to survive. The corporation that controls the aliens frames the gathering of the oxyone as a game to them to make it easier and probably less sinister. The aliens believe it's a game, but it's really not. The main guy is likely going to figure this out with the girl, who he believes is just glitched out.
This show was able to peak my interest again with this second episode, except my reason for being interested differs from episode 1. I really was NOT expecting that twist like it's really all a game, seriously? Can they really mix this storyline with what was presented in ep 1? I guess only time will tell. I am very intrigued to see how this plays out, I'm predicting this will end up as one of the most unique anime ever
Also I'm seeing lots of people aren't liking the twist but I think it's just because of how early it was presented in the story. Personally I loved it. It's something you don't see a lot or even at all. It's presenting something new to a genre where cliche plots are the norm. It's refreshing and again can be revolutionary if produced right
I've seen a lot of people confused for some reason (despite the more than lengthy explanation we've got in the episode) so here is a really small summary of the world setup:
A (presumably alien?) Corporation has taken over Eurasia and made the whole continent as sort of MMO game where employees of the company (tiny robots) take the role of Gears to fight the Gadoll and gather their blood, which is an important resource they call Oxycone (that seemingly powers all robots).
Meanwhile, humans (which have no idea what exactly is going on) are permitted to stay in one of the Oxycone tanks of the Deca-Dence as an endangered species. They are unknowingly being used as labor and a sort of NPCs.
Make no mistake though, as the show tells you in the literal beginning, this is not a virtual world. Those are real people that die for real.
