How to tell the difference between hunter x hunter 1990s and hunter x hunter 2000s? Are they the same? Whats the difference? I can't tell which one I bought
1999 is cel animation and in a 4:3 ratio (square)
2011 is digital animation and 16:9 (rectangle)
Crunchyroll has the 2011 anime
If you just bought it recently, then it's the 2011 anime. The 1999 one is looooong out of print.
Are both series the same? Just with different art styles?
The 1999 version only covers up to the Greed Island arc, the 2011 version covers up to the Election Arc (meaning that it's way longer), also the 2011 version portrays the events of the manga more accurately than the 1999 version.
However I have to admit that HxH 1999 has good nostalgia factor and that the Spiders arc was way darker than HxH 2011.
Skip over the first one, the 2012 version is the definitive way to enjoy the series, better direction, better music, the 1999 version only covers like 50% of what the 2012 does.
If you enjoy older anime like me, i might give it a try, the colors and chatacter designs are better imo, but i wouldnt want it as an introduction to the series.
Cheers!
I see you chose to watch the new one! Excellent choice, but the old one is definitely worth watching too down the road. Some consider to be superior

Definitely do. While I adore the 2011 adaptation, the 1999 version's tone and aesthetic cleave closer to that of the original manga and make what kind of story the show is telling clearer earlier. I understand why the later version decided to play its cards closer to its chest, and it does work, but nonetheless.

Which one should i watch ?
Hunter x Hunter Hunter x Hunter 2011
if both then which one should i watch first ?
If you are watching the 2011 anime, you don't need to watch/read anything else to go along with it. Do keep in mind that the anime is technically unfinished and the story extends itself in the manga. So if you complete the anime and want more, read the manga. Personally, I am satisfied with just watching the anime.

I would actually recommend you watch the 1999 version first. Hear me out: I love the 2011 remake and on its own it still holds up amazingly well. But the 1999 anime is just severely overlooked. One could simply say "art better" and leave it at that. Yes, the art adds a lot to the experience that is quite literally just missed in the 2011 anime (though the 2011 artstyle works best for the hunter exam and greed island arcs), but the 1999 anime just has amazing atmosphere in general. One of the suprising things for me is the quality of the anime only content as well. It is quite literally the same level as togashi's writing. You just get more greatness, especially in the first arc. A lot of people's favorite arc in this series is yorknew city and after seeing both versions I don't think I could really go back to the remake without immediately watching the old version too. Similarly Killua became my favorite character just from how much extra development he gets in the 99 show.
My suggestion would be to watch the first 62 episodes of HXH99 that ran on TV and the yorknew city OVA. Skip the greed island OVA. That one is not good and didn't age well at all. It is really enjoyable in the remake though. Once you're done with the 99 anime watch the three last arcs (greed island, chimera ant and election arc) through the remake. The latter two just don't exist in the old anime. This shift would start at episode 59 of the 2011 anime. After watching the 99 anime I rewatched most of the 2011 one so as far as comparisons of enjoyment goes I'm very confident I've cracked the code for the prime HxH anime experience.

Hello everbody nice to see you again. This time I wanted to ask everyone to pick: 1. Voice acting 2. Animation and other details. Which version do you like better on each of those. I personally like the older one in voice acting and in all other things. I get it if somebody watched the new version first, it wouldn't be the same.
spoiler
For example when in the old version they were fighting with the prisoners and Killua just had the heart of the serial killer in his hand. In the new version he had it in a plastic bag. Let's just say I didn't like that.
