I like a lot of stuff that's usually considered pretentious or self-indulgent. I'm about to finish Evangelion and I loved it, I'm looking for other series with philosophical and psychological themes, doesn't matter if it's really popular as long as I haven't watched it. If the core of the story is not extremely original that's also fine. Thanks.
If you liked Evangelion you'll feel right at home in
Serial Experiments Lain
Paranoia Agent
>pretentious
you know thats not a good thing right
anyways look through my list im the most pretentious man alive
Well
Bakemonogatari
Monogatari series as a whole is one hell of a ride if you've got the dedication to sit through 13 seasons, but it's for sure worth it
and if you're looking for the watch order go for the modified shaft order from https://anilist.co/forum/thread/2676
oh and also
Death Parade for sure, try this out it won't miss
WONDER EGG PRIORITY
Parasyte the maxim
I'll recommend this one right off the bat since you liked the movie so much.
Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex
Not sure if these are considered pretentious, but a good amount of elitists I know love these
Bakemonogatari
Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju
The Tatami Galaxy
A pretty common recommendation, but still
SteinsGate
Monster
Mega Big Brains for this one, didn't want to say Death Note cuz that's mainstream, someone will suggest it lol
Gurren Lagann
Mononoke
not an anime but still gotta mention this
Berserk
Devilman Crybaby
DEVILMAN crybaby
its pretty good
This has one of the most interesting worlds I have seen and is all in all spectacular.
Made in Abyss
The movie is where things get really philosophical
SteinsGate
Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai (kinda?)
FateZero
Serial Experiments Lain
When They Cry <-------------- this is insane 100% recommend
❂ This one is usually considered pretentious as far as my knowledge goes, it has some philosophical themes, and it's one of my two best favorites:
Legend of the Galactic Heroes
❂ This one has philosophical themes:
Casshern Sins
❂ This one has psychological themes:
Ghost Hound
❂ Also, I saw that someone had already suggested Monster and I support that suggestion strongly, since it fits your requests the most in my opinion.
I second Paranoia Agent!
Mousou Dairinin
Surprised no'one has mentioned this one yet
Mahou Shoujo MadokaMagica
Might also like
Ito Junji Collection
Possibly won't be to your taste but I'll mention anyway
Shoujo Kakumei Utena
Mahou Shoujo MadokaMagica
Gakkou Gurashi
I feel like they both deal with the theme of hope in a really good way, hopefully if you choose to watch any of them you enjoy you viewing experience
The Big O
the Garden of sinners Chapter 2 and nothing heart Murder Speculation Part A
Haibane Renmei
Anything made by Mamoru Oshii
Anything made by Satoshi Kon
Anything involving Chiaki Konaka
Already mentioned but also recommended:
Psycho Pass
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
Madoka Magica
I really like this kind of philosophical anime so here are some of my favourites
Code Geass Lelouch of the Rebellion Code Geass Lelouch of the Rebellion R2
^My personal favourite show. I love the plot, the themes and most characters, regardless of how cliche they look at first, are well developed. Plus it has my favourite protagonist and a focus on battle tactics and politics that I love.
Legend of the Galactic Heroes
^If you like the battle tactics and politics side of Code Geass, this is a show completely dedicated to that. The best political drama I've ever seen.
Magi The Labyrinth of Magic Magi The Kingdom of Magic
^It's a fine shonen adventure series, but nothing special. Where it shines is in the geopolitics and complex philosophy of its world.
Neon Genesis Evangelion The End of Evangelion
^Watch this right after you finish Evangelion.
Revolutionary Girl Utena
^A series influenced by surrealism, with some really interesting themes, but I think I should say no more.
From the New World
^Again I think it's better to go in without knowing much.
Serial Experiments Lain
^You'll probably spend most of the series not understanding what's going on. But when everything clicks and you start to realise the consequences of what you're watching it becomes genius.
Ergo Proxy
^As the name suggests, it's Cartesian philosophy: the anime. It takes a while to really get going, but episode 10 is where it shows what it's really about.
Hope you find something you like here.
