I log in and see a notification. Surprised it's for Ranma. The reason being ... to reflect the original broadcast.... . While I somewhat do understand the reason behind it, it also seems destructive itself. If we want to follow seasonal, there should be a change in all long running series that have movies, OVAs etc. Scrap Sidestories and movies all together and make people watch it in order sequel/prequel as it was intended.
The argument you've made for Ranma 1/2 could also made into a counter argument for some donghua anime, that their original broadcast was/is continuous (without break), but you cut it into 13 episode parts.
Back to Ranma. If we follow the seasons part (courtesy of Anime News Network):
"Seasons:
Everything should be changed from side story to sequels and prequels......
Another long running show that could be turned this way is Detective Conan. It has a lot more movies and OVA, of which some have special TV episodes especially related to a movie or similar. Why not change those series?
And if you already have to split the series into parts just at some line in the code to copy the previous score to both series.
The main reason this got split is actually the fact that they're referred to separately by the creators. I forgot to mention this in the notification and I will shamelessly play the "I just woke up" card. The question that we brought up to ourselves was whether there was any reason to not split it.
The title is different from the 19th episode onwards. Look no further than the title cards and eyecatches of the show to see for yourself. Here are the title cards from episodes #18 and #19. If you so please, you can look even further than that.
The "seasons" you've brought up from ANN are based on the box sets released in North America by Viz Media. These have nothing to do with the original broadcast and are therefore completely irrelevant in how we list anime.
The original Sailor Moon TV series is split into five separate entries on this site despite airing continuously for the entirety of its 200 episode run. You're free to throw a guess as to why this might be the case.
"They're considered seperate by the creators"
Then why have they shoved Episodes 7-9 of the "second" series into the original in all home media releases? When they made the box sets, they didn't make 1 set of the original 18 episode run seperate from the other 143. It's not just Viz, it's also in japan that they do this. The only proof that it's seperate is the "Nettou-hen" subtitle, but I've never seen a solid reason as to why that's there.
It's a very old anime, I didn't even know it had been paused and I don't care.
I find the change unnecessary, but,I have no voice or vote to decide, so I will have to add the new series to increase the status of my list and my ego, to be able to say, God, just look at that, I have seen more than 900 series!! xD
There's absolutely no reason for the split. Even in Japan the show is considered one long adaptation. If they were meant to be seperate they would have a bluray set for the original 18 episode run and then other sets for the other 143 episodes, but the first 18 episodes are included in the first set. Also, the episodes are presented on the Japanese and American bluray sets in "Production Order", which means episodes 7-9 of "Nettou-hen", or 25-27 of the full 161 episodes, are presented as episodes 14-16, breaking up the original 18 episode run.
Splitting the show like this will confuse the audience. If they just want to watch the first "season" and they download something labelled as that or watch a dvd/bluray set, they're not getting 18 episodes. They're getting 21.
The thread "The division is stupid" and its comments have been merged into this thread.
You can view the merged thread's body below:
No other anime website divides both series, this should've been only one series with 161 episodes here.
Your thread has been merged into an already existing one questioning why the entry was split with several responses already.
Our listing is reflective of the original airing, how "Ranma 1/2" was cut and then reworked into "Ranma 1/2: Nettou-hen". That title change is why they are split, they are referred to separately by the creators.
How other listing sites combine or split entires has no reflection of our own criteria.
Just like how we have 2 versions of Haruhi, the original 2006 airing and then the 2009 airing which is half-composed of the original episodes and half all-new.
At least change the english name for the second series, makes no sense the the first being "Ranma 1/2", and the second being "Ranma 1/2 (1989)"
That is to comply with our title formatting criteria. As the English licensed release doesn't differentiate titles, we append the release year.
Romanization and Title Formatting/Entires Sharing Titles - Submission Manual
In the event that multiple entries on the site share format and title then the year that the secondary entry released should be appended to the entry and be enclosed in parantheses.
Whether you like the decision or not or whether it should be split or not, I won't comment on. I will however say:
No other anime website divides both series
AniDB does

I never even heard of these websites, the big ones like Anime News Network and MyAnimeList doesn't separate, and this division on Anilist just creates confusion.
May I ask if you're confused about Gintama?
anilist.co/anime/918
anilist.co/anime/9969
anilist.co/anime/15417
etc
Also, not to be a dick here, but arguably the biggest website for tv shows and movies also separates the seasons, even though the have a episode guide:
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096686/
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096685/
This is about the original Ranma 1/2, which got seven whole seasons over the span of merely three years. It's probably fair to split them, visual clutter aside.
I will comment, I've seen some things that shouldn't be split, like the different parts of the same season of Attack on Titan, and things that should be split (Season 1 of JJBA consisting of two extremely different arcs being treated as one entry. I'd rather like to rate Phantom Blood and Battle Tendency separately).
