Denji fought the katana guy, Makima did some scary shit but the MVP of this episode was Kobeni with her kitchen knife, i dont remember if it happened in manga but it was nice to see Kobeni kill the Granny as well. Loved her VA performance as well after the shootout.
Hands so good, loved the closeup shots as well.
Tbh i expected Denji vs Katana fight to be more limited after seeing Kobeni cut in the preview but it was better than i expected.
When reading manga i didn't really notice Sawatari's Nail getting ripped so i liked how the anime was attentive to it plus when sawatari summoned Snake the effect like her nail is turning into dust was cool.
Also that ending!!! Oof they are so creative and captivating.
wait, kobeni is not just an useless comedic relief meme? now i like her even more
She was never useless. Comedic relief? absolutely (but even that is not made to be excruciatingly annoying like Zenitsu, her mental breakdowns are very much understandable). But not useless. Even someone like Aki with his Kon and Himeno and her Ghost hand couldn't do much against the Eternity devil so keeping that in mind I have no clue where "Kobeni is useless" idea came from.
Well, the "idea" that Kobeni is useless pretty obviously stems from the fact that she contributed nothing besides shouting and screaming and stabbing her teammates during the Eternity Devil arc.
Aki was searching for a way out, and Arai was helping him. Himeno, Denji and Power didn't do much but they also weren't incessantly whining the entire time like Kobeni was. At least they kept calm and didn't allow the situation to worsen. Plus y'know... they didn't outright attempt to kill their teammates, so there's that...
They might've been in a bad situation but Kobeni's seriously just annoying, and contributes almost nothing but poor comic relief (like Zenitsu) throughout the manga.
But… isnt she right? The only way to get them the hell out of that hotel is to toss Denji to the devil so idk. Zenitsu is annoying bc he’s strong but always puts himself into some of the most stupid situations while here, there’s nothing you can do. It was completely hopeless. If not for Denji, they are all dead. Like what do you mean by allowing the situation to worsen? It was already the worst situation.
It was a bad situation but then she goes and stabs her team leader when it hadn't even been decided that the plan was officially to let the Eternity Devil kill Denji. She literally contributes nothing but harm to the team, at least in that arc. Plus she's insanely annoying with her incessant screeching and crying (which is where the Zenitsu comparison comes in).
Aki is the only one who decides not to kill Denji. And he got stab bc he protected Denji, not bc Kobeni tried to stab aki. She made the right decision: kill a stranger to save others. Other contributed what? They just walk around and do nothing. Like there was nothing they can do besides killing Denji, later or sooner. Imagine if she didn't try to stab denji, they would have to stay there longer, with no food. Let's say we delayed sacrificing denji in like 2 or 3 days. They would have to be there for 6 days. Meaning they are fucking dead. Plus the devil will just grow stronger due to the fear.
About the crying is annoying. Well i dont really care. Im not gonna mad at someone crying in that situation. Zenitsu has the strength to not be in stupid situations but he always chooses to be a fucking pussy. That's what made him annoying. Not just the crying screaming.
See, Kobeni has the balls to kill someone to save herself and her team but Zenitsu can only do shit when he sleeps
it was a bad situation but then she goes and stabs her team leader when it hadn't even been decided that the plan was officially to let the Eternity Devil kill Denji.
Everyone there except Aki had made up their minds to kill Denji period. To make sure Aki doesn't get in the way Himeno uses her ghost to bind him. Also Kobeni wanted to stab Denji not Aki who forcefully got in the way. I don't think you understood the scene very well.
She literally contributes nothing but harm to the team, at least in that arc.
She was literally helping Himeno and Arai, who like I mentioned above went with the "kill Denji" plan. So again pretty flawed argument.
Plus she's insanely annoying with her incessant screeching and crying (which is where the Zenitsu comparison comes in).
I agree to a certain degree. The anime amplified her "nervous noises" for more comedic effect, but her breaking down, crying and being paranoid is fine and displays her personality as opposed to Zenitsu who magically becomes calm when the situation needs him to be (he is awake for the major fights).
The show also constantly talks about having "screws lose". In Denji's case its how he approaches fights with no regards to himself, taking unhuman amounts of punishment with a smile. In Kobeni's case she balances her skill by being emotionally unstable (very much normal).
Copy pasting some replies from my comment here

Again did we watch the same anime? Power literally ate all their food. Also like I mentioned above "kill Denji" was agreed upon so she attempted to do just that. And again she didnot slash Arai. Apart from the whining part nothing in your point makes sense.

Again her contribution was helping Arai and Himeno in killing Denji and getting out. The fact you compare Kobeni to Zenitsu leads me to believe you understand nothing about her character lol.
So that's Makima's Power? Very interesting, though I think that she also has other Devils up her sleeve. Just have to wait. Didn't read the manga so couldn't know.
Kobeni is not a comedic relief character anymore! Her fight scene were really good. Honestly, no complain. Definitely Kobeni more after this. I also like the fight scene between Katana Man and Chainsaw Man. The constant switch between 2D and 3D for me is done well.
Really looks forward to where the story go next!
I always find I’m over analysing the show on the first watch so I always wait till I’ve watched it twice to leave a comment. At first I always focus on and look for the cgi, it’s a habit at this point but on second watch it’s always less noticeable. I’m terms of cgi I think this episode was pretty smooth and consistent. Only 2 times I thought the cgi looked actually bad in this show was when denji broke free of the zombies in episode 1 and the curse devil in episode 8. But the animation in this show is so high tier it’s hard for me to complain. But this episode was amazing overall.
Kinda sad it would seem this is how Himeno bows out, no glorious final battle just poofs into thin air.
Anyway a pretty entertaining episode, Kobeni becomes true hero of the show and Makima explodes some dudes (not a manga reader, but i kinda figured she'd survive).
Couple of slight plot niggles, why on earth would Makima pop all the random henchmen guys and not the two powered leaders? And Kobeni pulls all those amazing moves and then manages to completely miss the girl by the van point blank multiple times, even when she was sat in the drivers seat.
why on earth would Makima pop all the random henchmen guys and not the two powered leaders?
there are hints throughout the episode why.
Kobeni pulls all those amazing moves and then manages to completely miss the girl by the van point blank multiple times, even when she was sat in the drivers seat.
in the manga she runs out of bullets. Not sure why anime made the scene that way.
there are hints throughout the episode why.
wait, WAIT, WAIT, Makima said she didn't get shot, so either she,
A. Had bulletproof clothing, but on ep 8 it looks like she has gunshot wounds on her, not just blood splatter. So if she did get shot, either she survived and pretended to be dead, healed herself because she's a devil and somehow her powers is to know the names?, or
B. it was a body double, or
C. the real Makima is indeed, dead. and what we saw in ep 9, is not the real Makima, which can explain why she knows their name and decided not to explode the 2 leaders
I won't spoil anything besides what happened in the episode so
Makima got shot in the head once (from the guys behind) and twice (from thr guys in front) in her body. The reason she got up like nothing happened is supposed to be a mystery at this point in the story. As for why she didn't pop the two leaders there are some hints shown:
One uncontracted human for one uncontracted thug. Therefore the leaders being special (one being a hybrid, the other being a contracted human) could not be killed this way.
She probably uses the eyes of crows (some contract) to see the thugs and has some sort of contract with some devil to know their names.
The question by Madoka at the end also implies Makima was fully aware of the assault and is deliberately keeping the 2 leaders alive.
That dumb bitch Himeno is finally dead and gone in the anime, woohooooo. Kobaeni is here to stay as well, wonder if we'll have best girl appear this season or not. Also the scene with Makima killing those dudes was executed amazingly, thoroughly enjoyed being absolutely terrified for like 3 minutes straight or however long that went on for.
Makima doing all that crazy Hunter x Hunter voodoo shit was badass
She probably is a devil or a hybrid like Denji no way that was just contract powers. Also her eyes are similar to the Fox Devil so I'm personally leaning more on Devil or she just has a rinnegan.

I wonder if Makima was the one to commit the terrorist attack to further her own goals, cause how did she know the names of the terrorists and why didn't she kill Katana Man and Sawatari
Damn Snake really gives all that power just for a fingernail. I guess Devils only give contracts with heavy tolls to the devil hunters and give more soft contracts to people that are neutral or friendly to devils.
Kobeni being trained by John Wick over there, her scene was the best in the episode.
Overall great episode and Aimer in the ed made it even better
Really cool episode, I agree. The details and sound design were fantastic. Right now I'm even more scared of Makima than I was initially. I don't know who or what she is, and I have a theory that this was a planned attack for her to gain more power and control of the devil hunters, and maybe also get back at Himeno, as a bonus, for absent mindedly messing with her relationship she's trying to cultivate with Denji for a specific purpose.
I LOVED THIS EPISODEEE omg Kobeni was amazing, I never expected her to be so skilled. AND MAKIMA IS TERRIFYINGGG her power reminded me a lot of that one Junji Ito story in which a giant hand falls from the sky and squashes you. The fight between Katana Man and Denji was so cool too, I'm sure we'll get a round two at some point. This is definitely one of my favorite episodes so far, looking forward to the next one!!
If ep 8 left me speechless then ep 9 left my jaw on the literal ground as an anime only
The whole sequence of Makima being Light Yagami was actually menacing and creepy as fuck, along with Kobeni (who I thought is just a side character trying to lighten up the mood) getting her sudden spotlight.
The amount of violence in this episode is absolutely insane, can't wait for next ep.
This episode showcases how Chainsawman fucking respects the viewer's intelligence and lets them figure things out by themselves. Apart from throwing nuggets of information which paint a picture of how certain powers works (Makima's orbital bombardment), small details like Kobeni being the only human character known to be fast enough to dodge bullets and devil attacks and also how she held Denji up with one arm (when moments ago there's a scence where one of the thugs complains about how fucking heavy he is), scenes focusing on the missing fingernails of Sawatari, Makima for some reason knowing names of all henchmen, fucking random crows flying around the henchmen, bigass holes on the bodies of the men who shot Makima, and a lot of other story beats which the show explains later, which recontextualizes entire arcs, is what makes theorizing in CSM so fun.
For the anime onlys, yes everything will be explained. Nothing will be handwaved away so keep theories incoming.
Well said. I pity all those with a TikTok-level attention span who dropped the show early thinking they had it all figured out without actually letting things settle itself over time. Their dumb comments about Denji's personality or equating it to fucking ecchi shounens...in the end it's their loss but I wish more people would learn to appreciate art properly again.

I think this is overall an episode where why I would say it's not bad, it could've been better. Cracks in the production are also starting to show but the episode had good highlights, still.
As usual we have a sort of recap, but without reusing cuts which is still pretty cool in itself, a bit too long for my taste but that's probably due to pad the episode to not mess the pacing up.
Chainsaw Man vs Katana Man was... underwhelming. With everyone hyping Katana Man up so much, I was expecting him vs Chainsaw to be the highlight but it apparently isn't. Some good cuts in-between, Maximum the Hormone being utilized here felt definitely weird though, as the fight in itself wasn't really hype for me, considering how badly things are going right now. With the more live action approach to this adaptation, particularly the part before the OP didn't feel right.
(KA: Kaito Tomioka)
I also have plenty of own issues for this fight, as the switch between fast and slow pacing in it was weird, shots lingering too long sometimes and for my taste also too much use of 3dcg. Don't get me wrong, I don't think 3dcg itself is bad, and MAPPA is doing a pretty good job blending it, but I don't think their 3D animation is as good as the 2d segments, and especially in a fast-paced fight, it felt kinda janky. The boards are also pretty rigid and not as good as we're used to from some previous action heavy episodes like episode 4 from Yoshihara, so even the 2d animated segments weren't a huge stand-out, although I liked them more.
(KA: Chris, Hayato Kurosaki, Michael Sung)
Makima also starts to take action, and man, it's kinda gruesome. I wonder what her devil is, but the fact she doesn't seem to give a single care shows a lot about her character, too. My favourite cut from this episode has to be the clothing animation when she's at the temple.
(KA: Unknown, Corrections by Hironori Tanaka)
And oh my god look at her. The way she was drawn in the entire temple sequence is giving me chills.
It seems like that Makima doesn't sacrifice anything when using her devil contract, maybe she uses the men exactly for that? Is that a condition for her specific devil, hm. We'll surely get more details on her devil later.
What I also didn't expect for sure this episode was Kobeni saving Denji in such a fabulous way. Now THIS is an exciting action sequence, probably because it's boarded by Fujimoto himself, though.
(KA: Kouki Fujimoto, Hironori Tanaka)
She's even more messed up than we all thought sheesh
Overall, I like the direction of the plot here. Makima really has a very strong presence, scenes with her just have higher intensity than you usual. Especially in this episode, where she's showing more of her true colors. At this point, I really don't know how CSM will continue in terms of plot. Production definitely showed cracks in this episode, but it still overall looked good with great highlights as the staff itself is great, of course. We'll see in the remaining episodes if it will improve.
Also a big fan of the ed, which was directed, storyboarded, animated and edited by Masanobu Hiraoka. The imagery with the grotesque images like eye, hand, and the blood was really strong, accompanied by a wonderful ending song by Aimer. This might be my favourite ed.
Episode Rating: 7/10
Now, alot of people are focusing their discussions and theories on Makima, but i won't do that because she seemed like a manipulating psycho since the second ep, but what i wanna know is WHY Himeno didn't jumpstart Denji from the start??? i mean, he could've bought enough time for all of them to evacuate and probably could've fought with Aki, also really want to see Kobeni's devil contract, from what i can see with her being afraid and how devils use fear, the more she's afraid the more her devil gains power and in turn, her being superhuman, but what does she pay?
