Agwoooooo Reina looks damn good in anything. Kumiko was right. This sunfes fit is still the worst one, there is no changing that.
Generally i'm not a fan of introducing problems of character and resolving them in a single episode but i liked this one. I have always liked motomu so this works for me either way, shuichi should have had some scene or two trying to help out but whatever.
I'm just very disappointed in KyoAni that the march was just faded out like seriously....... use damn cgi if its hard to draw or remove some mundane scenes but you could've at least included the march, what's the point of the outfit otherwise. for that reason alone its my least favourite entry from the entire series. Caught me off guard and came across as just lazy, sure there is limited time but good direction and scriptwriter could've made it work. They made it work in haruhi so why not here. Now i'm not even hopeful if they will even include tournament performances.
Finally, a Motomu episode. Ever since the movie, I wanted to learn more about him and his relation with Midori and it didn't disappoint, great episode.
But yeah, I'm also disappointed we didn't see their performance in the Sunrise Festival :-(
yeaa mann. They didn't have to go all out animating the lighting of the turning car in the scene where motomu and kumiko parts away. At least the half part just like s1, and the rest could've been a part of the movie compilation. I was badly waiting to see the performance.
I'm gonna let this slide because it's kyoani.
(and does anyone know what they might have played? Any references in LN)
Another fantastic episode, less Ririka which is a negative, but glad the Motomu stuff from Chikai got focused on! Also glad to see Reina following up with people and being supportive, found the people who thought the last episode was an indication that she was a bad leader/teacher kind of dumb. Reina does actually care about others.
I do wish we got a performance at the parade but also all the Rikka scenes were more than I could have hoped for. Absolutely made up for the lack of parade.
Well, I think they've animated the marching bands enough in season 1 and Chikai. There was drama enough with the freshmen feeling overwhelmed by Reina's strictness during training.
The Motomu abruptness was seeded back in Chikai with him being a rather prickly character then with his supposed sensitivity being attributed to his height. I think they paced it well with his drama being sorted out in the one episode. I don't think it needed to be fleshed out much more.

They did reference that it was related to Gen-chan during Chikai when Kumiko realized that they had the same name. So there was some references to his issues relating to his family/grandfather then
The focus of this season is how Kumiko deals with being a leader and how she helps her band members cope with their personal issues. I think holding onto that throughline is more important than a march that we've seen like 3 times already. We will see them play plenty of times in the actual competitions later on, so there will be time for that as well.
The SunFest of the first season, the animation, the piece, RYDEEN, was one of the highlight moments. Gotta say I felt really disappointed after that fade to black, more so since they focused how strict Reina was.
Wish they'd spare that one scene with that car's headlight illuminating that conversation and do the marching band instead...
However, the Motomu - Midori duet was simply sublime, it gave me goosebumps and that last scene made me tear up.
You lose some, you win some, I guess...
Really disappointed by the SunFes fade out. SunFes in season 1 was one of my favorite parts and I was really looking forward to seeing another marching performance. Though getting to see Rikka again was nice. And I thought the stuff with Motomu was handled well even though he's not a character I particularly care about much.
I'm really hoping we'll get to see it in the extra episodes
I actually like that they omitted the actual march. This episode was clearly supposed to be about motomu, so I don't mind that they cut some parts out to really tighten down the microscope to a singular members struggles and place in the band. We'll see more actual musical performances I'm sure.
The ending duet was beautiful btw
The whole Motomu thing was strange. I mean, I liked his story it was good but from what we've seen in the movie we were under the impression that he despised his grandfather and always kept complaining about being called by his familly name but in the end he doesn't hate his grandfather or anything he just want to honor his sister by enjoying music in a different band and it's tottaly fine .
I have no idea why he was acting like he despised his grandfather throughout the whole show only to find that he doesn't hate him or anything kinda strange

I think its not that he hates him per se but that he does at least partially contribute blame to his grandfather for how his sister was treated, with the implication that he didn't take enough care to try and stem the harassment and bullying she received. He doesn't hate him because he understands that that isn't entirely reasonable but it doesn't change that that is part of how he still feels. Its relatively easy to acknowledge something is wrong to think, not necessarily easy to truly internalize that and not emotionally act on those initial thoughts.
In short losing a close family member, especially at his age, is not going to be easy and people handle their grief in other ways.
Production is still stellar and all the character animation is always lovely to see as always. Kyoani is truly back.
Story-wise, it was great to see Motomu again as he's one of my new favorites, but the drama was a little undercooked and resolved a little too easily off-screen (and also, like with previous first-years, a little too unempathetic to the kids issues?). I think this has to be set-up for when Kumiko's Floofy Presidentness isn't enough to magically resolve a first-year's issues so easily by the power of dialogue alone, probably once Mayu gets the spotlight.
