If you judge the very complex relationship between reina and kumiko "yuribait", let me tell you that you haven't understood anything at all: for me it was clear from the beginning that the two of them wouldn't end up together, precisely because at different times they proved to be very different and above all dependent on each other just like two friends; at the same time with shuichi there was always that subtext that led to the ending we saw, it was obvious from the beginning.
And then honestly, can we stop comparing the LN with the animated product? they are clearly two different paths, with the latter having attempted a much riskier and perhaps less satisfying approach than the former, in my opinion daring intelligently.
This season is leagues above the first and perhaps slightly below the second in terms of the success of all the messages they wanted to give, but it is well above average for all the crap we have to put up with every season.

People will take offense on the term "yuribait" to describe KumiRei's relationship due to insinuation that the only purpose of the relationship is to bait people onto watching the show and that their relationship is not as complex as it actually is like the other op said, but I agree it's kinda delusional not to aknowledge that Kyoani knew what they were doing, that's why it doesn't surprise me when people think of them that way even if they've watched the show and know how deep their bond is.
As a queer person who also loves kumirei and hate kumishuu: yuribait its not a thing, no matter what this show will always be about kumiko and reinas relationship and is so much more than jus something-bait. im also frustrated about the hairpin but it literally does not matter, romance is irrelevant this season, why would we focus on it? lets just talk about how wonderfull the finale was.
And just so you know, kumirei its not a kyoani thing, thats a lie made up by ppl who didnt read the novels, ask anyone who actually did read them and they will thell you they are gayer than the anime
