the reason is super simple:
creator is the same
Mashima only did the character design
Sure, but it has been this way for 20 years now, if Hiro Mashima is involved in a project, it is basically going to always be the same style of story with the same characters with a few minor adjustments (Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, in fact that is part of why I am even watching this since I enjoy his work)
