I'm normally not one to publicly voice my opinion on an anime episode like this, but after watching I need to express my thoughts.
I am a manga reader who has been anticipating this being animated for a while, so going into this I definitely had expectations. Unfortunately, I was left disappointed. My primary issue with the episode is that a noticeable amount of animation is visually muddled. The start and end of Maki's actions (because no one else really gets a chance to move) are fairly clear, however the in-between periods are either missing (i.e. the camera cuts from before Maki swings her sword to after, the motion itself is not animated) or lack detail (i.e. during motions limbs, weapons, or the like are out of frame or do not fit in frame/framed poorly). I understand that this may be a stylistic choice but that does not mean I have to like it, art is subjective after all. Other parts of the animation that negatively stood out for me were when Maki was just sliding backwards for a solid 2 seconds, and the numerous consecutive replays of Naoya getting his face punched in.
Additionally, I feel there was also a lack of anticipation within the action choreography. Against the Kukuru Unit this makes sense as they're essentially fodder, but none of the other 'fights' had that sense of anticipation right before a hit that elevated the impact to make it satisfying. Again, this is probably just a stylistic choice meant to showcase that all of these people are fodder now that Maki has 'awakened' her full potential, but I can still choose to dislike it.
I think the primary factor that is responsible for the issues I personally have with the episode is the pacing. Everything is far too frantic, never really giving time to let thing stew, and constantly cutting to new angles. This definitely could've been two episodes, but maybe there was pressure to contain it into one.
Some things I did like were the homage to Kill Bill. I haven't seen any of the Kill Bill movies, but I can recognize the influence. I also felt that most of the animation involving Naoya was fairly well done.
If I were to give this episode a rating I'd give it a 7/10. Overall, the episode itself is above-average, carried by the premise of Maki giving the Zenin Clan their comeuppance, but is hurt by the animation direction and pacing.
