Wow! In my one-day absence there's been so many great responses! I feel like this thread has been very constructive . Your definitions have really influenced my perspective on these words. Demo! There's just one thing I'd like to say! Isn't it amazing that anime has progressed so far in the west? For these terms to pop up means that anime has gained quite some attention, am I right? Maybe not all of it is good, and maybe most of it is superficial. But, in my day-to-day life, seeing people in this melting pot of cultures mention an anime, whether the dialogue be cruel or somewhat frustrating to me personally, is really a beautiful thing. Maybe my horizons were tiny to begin with, but for me, for anime to be put under terms like "mainstream", "hype", "over-hyped", or "classic", it goes to show that anime has piqued the interests of a universal audience. And why not? I think anime is beautiful. I think they should be recognized, to be excited over. May more terms pop-up, negative or positive. It only goes to show that, maybe just maybe, anime has graduated from it's place as a "subculture" to something that can fit within our "mainstream culture".
And to my respondents, I say thanks and much love! This may be an arbitrary thread but to see all these essays means that my question was at least somewhat relevant. Arigatou minna! For my very first real thread, I've seen so many responses! I'm honored. Sank you.
