The show's art style was unique sure, but it honestly wasn't the best. At times the animation and art was just awful. And I'm not even talking stylistically, just from an artistic standpoint. Sometimes characters would have almost no facial details. Unique isn't always a good thing.
The underlying message is also nothing new. What's the message? That humanity can be evil? That's not a new message at all and one that's been explored in almost every piece of media since the beginning of times. Granted you can explore these themes in a new way or in a way that is interesting, but Devilman Crybaby doesn't do that. It's pretty immature honestly, partly due to its rushed pacing and nonsensical character motives.
If you're going to drive the point home that humanity can be evil, the descent to that has to be believable. But in the show it's just....ridiculous and with a bunch of plot holes.
Devilman Crybaby. I jumped into the series listening to all the hype and was expecting an amazing series.
However, what I got was a show with pretty terrible pacing, horribly written characters that were both stupid and had either no motivation or completely nonsensical ones, and some odd choices of animation that only worsened the conflicting tones (which weren't executed well mind you).
The only good parts of the show really were the action scenes, the amazing synthwave soundtrack, and a select few moments of the series that really showed its potential. Besides that it was pretty lackluster.
