I found it a bit difficult and very distracting when I started and watched dub until I got into AOT at which point I switched, some pausing was utilized but I think it got pretty natural after a few shows and now I only watch subbed.

I'm currently watching the last arc and really enjoying it. I agree the first 48ish episodes leave much to be desired, but if you stick with it the animation and characters will definitely improve.

It's a good watch! There was also a sequel intended for slightly older audiences called The Legend of Korra.
