Don't think there's anything that's not worth a try at least. The closest to anything like that is Sword Art Online the Movie Progressive Aria of a Starless Night
but I think it's clear that you're taste is just different from mine, so who I am I to say.
There is bad. There is so bad it's good. This is one step beyond that: It's so bad that it's good and loops right back around to just being bad again.
Manga reader here,
The reason Overhaul and MVA were hyped up was because they are fan-favorite arcs in the manga. They're really good... in the manga. They are also the two worst arcs in the anime from an adaptation standpoint.
Manga readers are probably the people who are the most disappointed with this season because of how they treated the source material.
The story itself hasn't been getting worse, the adaptation has. The manga keeps getting better (with a couple of exceptions like Joint Training) while the anime has been getting worse.
Nothing short of a complete overhaul of the MVA arc will get me to view this anime in the same light as I once did. I don't think I can get over what they did, there's always going to be a part of me that is thinking about what they ruined while watching this show now. It really sucks because Bones used to be a top tier studio, and MHA a top tier adaptation, but I can't help but dread what they'll do next season.
If you liked anything in the villain arc at all, go back and read the manga from chapter 218. It's an infinitely better experience.
The anime stopped at chapter 258, but you really should go back to 218.
For context: pretty much all of 218 and 220 was cut, along with a lot of content from MVA (and a lot of what was cut is important, this is why manga readers have been so pissy about this season, they fucked up one of the best manga arcs).
It's such a strange mix of emotions for me. On the one hand, this episode was incredible, and while it did censor the backstory and cut some minor things, they didn't do as much as I thought they would with that. But it just makes the rest of their handling of MVA look worse in comparison. This is probably the only episode of this arc that I think handled the adaptation well enough (though some people probably will argue last episode did too, it just didn't quite do it for me when it came to a few key moments).
Really hoping for a version 2 for the next arc. The majority of this second half of the season only makes up like 15% of the OP, and there are definitely things to suggest that they might go that direction despite the lack of precedent. Much better than the previous OP IMO. MHA is finally going to get to the real good shit, and while I'm not too fond of them moving an entire arc (as they've already spoiled bits and pieces of it) I'm starting to really feel the hype.
