there's like absolutely nothing backing this theory and its very stupid, besides, shanks is listed as a swordsman in the data books and he lost his arm saving luffy in the sea. yeah sure he mightve ate one after that incident but i doubt it. he could be just following rogers footsteps where he didnt have a devil fruit but insanely strong haki, and shanks' feats are mostly of his haki prowess; how he scared ryokugyo with just his conqueror's alone from miles away, his advanced armament matching mihawk's dark blade, and his observation being advanced and unique.
Before I start with this long rant: I just want to say that if you enjoyed this movie then that's totally fine, enjoyment is subjective, but I wanted to share my experience as to why I believe this movie doesn't deserve the hype and love it gets.
I watched this movie yesterday with my partner, needless to say, he enjoyed it to a degree, but I found it to be extremely mediocre, I really really hated the characters with a few exceptions such as Nagatsuki and Yuzuru, for me, the most important thing in a slice of life / romance is the quality of the characters and their likability, I found almost the entire cast to be either pointless, total assholes, or a plot device that didn't serve any other purpose. None of the characters from start to finish actually have any development besides Shoya, which is arguably not that much considering that sudden change only happened at the end of the movie.
If you ask me why I dislike the characters so much, I'll condense all of them into this list as to why I dislike them
Shoya = Our protagonist; I hated how he kept victim-blaming himself even towards the end of the movie despite him bullying Nishimiya and being a total dickbag in grade school. We notice when he grew up that he became more of the quiet, depressive anxious teenager because of this, and this had a ton of potential, but he was just awkward throughout the whole movie, with only a very sudden change at the end where he stops becoming socially anxious anymore. His behavior on the bridge with all his "friends" made them turn away from him, he hit their worst spots and didn't even APOLOGIZE for his poor behavior. The only time he apologizes is when it's the last 10 minutes of the movie to Nishimiya, apologizing for being mean and breaking her hearing aids, and then they both cry.
Nishimiya = The deuteragonist; besides her being deaf and constantly apologizing, she is just a plot device, despite Shoya bullying her in grade school she persistently kept chasing after him and asking him to be friends (which is totally realistic, by the way), and even half-way through the movie when they were both grown up she even tried to say she loved him, when all their interactions were just feeding Koi fishes and the occasional greetings. I feel like the only reason why people like her is because she's deaf, and that's supposed to stir up some empathy and pity.
Ueno = Arguably the most dislikeable character in this whole movie, throughout the movie she is just a pure asshole, and she never changes ever so slightly, she even tells Nishimiya to her face that she hates her and that she's the problem of everything, which lead to Nishimiya wanting to kill herself. The only change we can see is unironically at the last 5 minutes of the movie when she learns a little bit of sign language to tell Nishimiya's she's a dumbass, and they have a small goofy interaction, then they both become shy and she runs off like a tsundere.
Kawai = Another character that I absolutely despise, Nishimiya and Shoya may be dislikable for me, but at least they had some self-reflection moments, where-as Kawai doesn't. She is the same person throughout the whole movie. She doesn't change from grade school to highschool; she's still a manipulative and selfish asshole that only ever cared for herself and her dignity, and had no problem shit-talking everyone, always pointing the blame to others whenever things don't go her way.
Yuzuru = Nishimiya's younger sister, at first she's very hostile towards Shoya because of how shitty he treated Nishimiya in the past and that's very reasonable, her hostility was justified throughout, I don't have much to say about this character other than I like her motives and how she acts in the movie, funnily enough the most mature person in the movie despite being the youngest.
Miyako = We don't really get much of her in this movie, but in the beginning when she finds out Shoya was going to kill himself she YELLS at him and threatens him that she is going to burn his 1.7M Yen check if he kills himself, and keeps gaslighting him that she is stressed out because of this. If this shit happened in real life Shoya would have more incentive to kill himself, but no, in this movie, he just moves on like nothing happened, which irks me because the more Shoya gained friends, the more his depression and mental illness issues just disappeared and that's not how mental illnesses work.
Nagatsuka = Probably my favorite character in this whole movie. He's the friendly, weird, and awkward friend that everyone has or had once in their lifetime, and he is very upbeat and supportive of Shoya in this movie. Even when Shoya told him to fuck off and that he knows nothing about him he still didn't care and said it's all right. This was the most likable character by far.
Shimada = Shimada was one of Shoya's best friends in grade school but after Shoya got outed as the main bully of Nishimiya he quickly dumped him despite being partners in crime with him, he told students to stay away from Shoya because he's a bully; he outright backstabbed his close friend in the back for no reason other than to save himself. We later see him working in a takoyaki truck in the amusement park, but that's it. The writer tried to make him a good person by implying that Shimada and his other old grade school friend helped him get out of the river when he fell into it trying to save Nishimiya, which is a poor way to make us care and sympathize.
Sahara = She was Nishimiya's only friend in grade school but left suddenly because of her cowardice, she didn't wanna get caught up with Nishimiya's bullying problems. Next time we see her she's a more confident person, to a degree, but then all of that goes down the drain when she is just thrown into the background as an extra in the friend group. Whenever something happened she'd apologize for being a coward and being scared, that's the gist of it.
Mashibasa = I unironically looked up this guy's name because I forgot it, that's how pointless and useless this character is. He has like 3-4 lines in the whole movie, and when Shoya tells him to go away at the bridge he says "so much for being friends" when he had no reason to butt in the whole drama at all from grade school, he collected pieces here and there mostly from Kawai and tried to reason when he shouldn't have. If the movie didn't have him it would be the same.
Moving on from the characters, the animation is stunning, and the music composition is fantastic; only problem with the music is when I started to tear up a bit at a part where Nishimiya bowed with her broken arm at the hospital while crying on Miyako's shoes, but then upbeat funky music started playing which kinda ruined it for me.
The movie had a lot of funny scenes that I laughed at, Maria should be protected at all costs.

If you like stuff that's gonna make you cry I recommend Helck or Real. Helck is a fantasy adventure manga whilst Real is more focused on Sports (but the plot doesn't revolve around sports, it's more about psychology). Helck is also funny at parts, It's one of my favorite manga that I've read recently.
Other than what you generally like, I recommend you read Dorohedoro, it's one of my favorites too.
Of course, all that matters in the end is your own enjoyment, and it's totally understandable for you to dislike stuff like that. In my experience, I personally found the gore a tad bit too appalling sometimes, as someone who is an atheist, I don't really have any sensitivity regarding religion in manga or media, but there is quite a ton of satanic symbolism in the manga that some readers may not like, which is also fine; like I said, at the end of the day your personal enjoyment of the manga comes first and everything else you can just ignore.
It's a hard manga to digest and follow, at first, you're thrown into this very chaotic world in Kaiman's prespective where you have no idea what's happening, why Kaiman lost his head, why he has no magic and he's resistant to it, the secret behind the hallway etc. It builds up mystery extremely well up til the end where everything gets answered accordingly, story was enjoyable to me and the mystery with each plot thread was masterfully done, but what cut the deal for me was the characters; Dorohedoro perhaps has one of the best character casts I've ever seen in manga, every character in this manga matters and has a purpose, and they're all very likable, we have Kaiman and Nikaido as our first set of protagonists, against the En Family which are our second set of protagonists, each protagonist has a certain motive and personality, and they all develop from start to finish, whilst I was reading the manga I had an inner conflict of who I liked more, and how I really didn't want Kaiman/Nikaido to face En's Family, I didn't know who to root for, and why, because both parties had valid reasons for fighting.
The story is nonsensical and mysterious at first, but it ramps up after we meet our next set of important secondary characters which are The Cross-Eyes, every chapter we have new plot threads to discover and theorize about, I don't think this is a good manga to read from start to finish in one setting or in a couple days, because you seriously need time to digest what's happening in the manga to understand; It's not a manga you can just read from start to finish without much thought, because Dorohedoro wasn't designed to be read that way.
As for the art; yes, it is EXTREMELY gorey, so if you're not into that then you probably shouldn't pick it up, but I found it very well done nontheless, I enjoyed it a ton, and Q Hayashida seriously puts into prespective how pretty her world building can be.
If you felt like you didn't understand the story, then maybe it is wise to reread again but not at once or over the course of a couple days, as it takes time to digest. It's one of my favorite mangas, ever, and for a reason: It has amazing cringeworthy art, phenomenal likable characters, insanely thought-out character plot threads, simple yet complex world-building, and to top it all off quite a bit of comedy here and there to not make it serious all the time.
Take my opinion with a grain of salt because this is seriously one of my favorite mangas of all time, and it's worth a 10 to me,
Keep in mind;
EVERYTHING GOES BACK TO CHAOS.
THIS IS WHAT DOROHEDORO IS ALL ABOUT!
@earphoneriot
I just followed, ur account is coolio
I'm pretty late on this but honestly I'd definitely recommend reading the manga, we still don't know when the anime will be released and trust me, it's really worth it. Around chapter 30 or so Helck becomes a serious adventure drama manga, and it's one of the biggest glow ups in manga I've ever witnessed, the art, plot, characters all get impossibly better the more you read. it's a 10 for me
