I am not trying to be aggressive, sorry if it did come of that way, but I genuinely cannot understand why you would let most of your scores for stuff that is bad, especially if you aren't going to watch it.
Unless you are actively going out of your way to watch for bad stuff, I cannot see why you would have a a system that focus on giving more nuance to the bad shows than the good ones.
But 5 is average, objectivity speaking, it's on the middle, the average. People only think that it is bad because it is normally a falling grade in school, but this isn't school, so there is no reason we should have to follow that.
The reason it's preferable to have 5 as average instead of something like 6 or 7 is because it frees up more space for good ratings, this way you use the entire scale instead of cramming all the good stuff at the top and not using the rest of the scores unless you actually seek bad shows for some reason.
If there was are ten points to use, I will use all of them, not doing so would be a waste.
Numbers don't mean anything in a vacuum, what means to give something an 8? It means that it is better than a 7 but not as good as an 9. But how good is that? Depends on how good the 7 and 9 are.
Numbers are arbitrary, a 8 for a person doesn't mean the same as it does to other.
I try to keep my mean score somewhere between 5 to 6, why? Because this way the scores get more presice, if you score anything good above an 8 there is no enough separation between how good you think each of it is. Now because I score that way I give a lot of anime a 5 or lower scores, but here is the thing, those aren't bad, they are just bellow the average. Many of the show I gave a 5 or a 4 I still think are enjoyable, so why give them that score? Because they are below the average of shows I watched.
Scores only hold meaning compared to other scores, if everything was good enough to be a 10, that would mean it's time to increase the standards to what a 10 is.
To me not thinking that way that doesn't make sense. If the scale goes up to 10 the middle is 5, so the average to score is a 5. If the average show tha you watch is still good, them that means a 5 is good, there is nothing about the number 5 that make so it has to be bad, this isn't school, there is no falling grade.
