There's absolutely no reason for the split. Even in Japan the show is considered one long adaptation. If they were meant to be seperate they would have a bluray set for the original 18 episode run and then other sets for the other 143 episodes, but the first 18 episodes are included in the first set. Also, the episodes are presented on the Japanese and American bluray sets in "Production Order", which means episodes 7-9 of "Nettou-hen", or 25-27 of the full 161 episodes, are presented as episodes 14-16, breaking up the original 18 episode run.
Splitting the show like this will confuse the audience. If they just want to watch the first "season" and they download something labelled as that or watch a dvd/bluray set, they're not getting 18 episodes. They're getting 21.
"They're considered seperate by the creators"
Then why have they shoved Episodes 7-9 of the "second" series into the original in all home media releases? When they made the box sets, they didn't make 1 set of the original 18 episode run seperate from the other 143. It's not just Viz, it's also in japan that they do this. The only proof that it's seperate is the "Nettou-hen" subtitle, but I've never seen a solid reason as to why that's there.
I think your idea of it being a live action limited series would be the best way to adapt Punpun. Punpun's family as animated characters and everyone else portrayed by real actors. Obviously produce it in Japan and have Japanee actors, but you really need a good director on this, and one who understands how to direct children. I don't want to see a Punpun adaptation if it's directed by a regular Japanese J-Drama director, as I've always found the production quality and direction in J-Dramas to be quite lacking. Denis Villeneuve could do a really good job with this, but if we were to keep it a solely Japanese production, Hideaki Anno would do good work.
@Nitroade24 I only looked at your favourites but I absolutely hated Your Lie in April when I watched it. I just kind of viewed it as a rip off of Clannad, even down to the character types.
Warning for whoever is under me: my ratings are a bit old, and I haven't been rating shows for the past few years. May or may not fix that.
It was a phone app that Kitsu acquired a while ago. I think it was a tracker, but it might have also had links to illegal streaming sites for basically every show since once the acquisition happened all the new users kept asking "how do I watch this show? where's the link to watch it" and stuff like that. As I said, all the new users alienated the old ones.
The biggest issue was that because Josh (the owner of kitsu) wanted Kitsu to be a social media site for anime fans that functioned like Twitter, we had no choice but to start using global feed to communicate with large groups, but then once the merge happened, we couldn't do that on global any more because it was filled with people asking for links to watch shows (which was against the site rules)
I can't say I miss the site specifically, it was and still is a dumpster fire. There were so many points that just lessened the user experience. Removal of forums in favor of a twitter-esque news feed, the multiple redesigns that instead of streamlining the experience instead served to confuse the user and make it harder for them to do basic tasks like set a show to rewatch, the merger of Kitsu and Aozora leading to a massive influx of new users that didn't understand how Kitsu worked that lead to mass alienation of older users, it was just a complete mess.
But as I said in the OP, I miss the community. Maybe I'm old and just not looking/refusing to look in the right places, but I've never found a site that had a community like Hummingbird/Early Kitsu did. Even AniList just kinda feels dead. The most I see from the forum is a billion forum games and the occasional news thread.
Oh well.
