As someone who love fmab and consider it as one of the best anime I’ve seen so far. Here’s why I think it’s so highly rated:
It’s different from your average shonen anime. It’s not about someone who wants to be the best. He just wants to get back to normal. From the very first episode you understand that Edward doesn’t really care (at first) about the future of his country, he just thinks about his brother and himself. He’s selfish. Which makes him different from your shonen-protagonist-type (I guess).
Plus as it was already mentioned the building of the universe and story is coherent. You understand easily what’s happening and why it’s happening. The protagonist is not overpowered at some point and the magical system is between soft and hard which makes it accessible to every kind of audience (non anime fan & anime fan, kids & adults etc). I’d like to point out that it’s one of the few (or maybe I just ignore the existence of others) anime which shows good written females characters as good written characters first. And without bragging about (I.e: the show doesn’t insist that yo women can fight, it just show it, and I find that really cool)
So yeah, basically it’s a good show. And most people who’ve watched it had a really good experience. Hence they rated it very highly.
@STARFLIGHT Wanted to give you 5/10 at first but the more I dig in your fav list the more I found your type is the edgy-somehow-nice-shonen-MC so that’s a 7/10
Soul Eater A classic old school shonen, and if like me, you enjoy the “soulmates-with-very-strong-alchemy-even-if-they’re-totally-differents-but-they-could-DIE-for-each-ofher” you’ll strongly ship the two MCs together lol
Boku dake ga Inai Machi
Okay probably a seinen but tbh it’s not graphic it just about mature themes (child abuse, murder etc) and its short (12 episodes) and it’s cute because them kids
I finished it yesterday and I feel the exact same thing however I don’t think it was cancelled, you could tell the plot became fragile when beating Sato became the main goal of the story and him being the luckiest antagonist. Which is a pity since the story was very entertaining and interesting during the first 2 volumes. (Also I’m not surprised by this rushed end because the author is the same who wrote Sky High survival and... that story is bad lol)
Oh mannn I totally understand you but consider giving it a second chance. I was thinking the exact same thing: very slow sometimes even boring, except that I started to like it a little bit at episode 10 (where he’s getting “sad and apologetic for beating an opponent in shogun match” although the scene right after in the kids playground where he screams made clear that, in fact, he is not sorry for beating his opponent and shouldn’t feel apologetic). And I didn’t regret keeping watching it when I started season2 where there’s a huge improvement on his character and a very good bully arc in it (and the lips animation get fixed lol).
Tldr: in my humble opinion try to give it a second chance. S2 is better and very well executed
Eyeshield 21
Illustrated by Yusuke Murata (who also illustrated One Punch Man, I checked your profil and you liked it sooo)
All You Need Is Kill
Short story (two volumes) beautiful illustrations
Tomochan wa Onnanoko
It’s a 4-koma shojo so idk if you’ll like it but hey the story is very cute/fun
Soul Eater
An iconic Shonen, the adaptation in anime is also good but takes a different path so it’s up to you to decide if you want to read or watch it (or both lol)
I tried to recommend you different genre (sport shonen, drama josei, 4-koma romance, action shonen) :p
I immediately thought about ONE, his artstyle broke my view of manga artist. It’s unique because well... it’s far from realistic or classic manga style. However his art style hold that special thing which makes it so cool. It’s deliberately « « ugly » » for comic relief purpose in OPM but in mb100 there’s something really captivating about how he draws character’s expressions. I just love that.
@bluffinie I think durarara!! would be your taste
