I think the reason why was that I really liked the characters and the soundtrack. Most of the Naruto characters really made me smile, and it made me happy watching more and more.
The second reason for me is that I watched the whole thing with my boyfriend for the first time, and I think it's that memory that also made it a higher love. Thinking back, yes, the story wasn't absolutely amazing, but it was the timing, atmosphere, and all in all, the soundtrack and mostly the characters that made me love it.
Then again, I rate everything a little differently than others. If I was doing an actual in-depth review - like something Roger Ebert would do - I'd probably make it about an 8. But because mine are a bit biased for reasons that were going on in my life and such, it tends to be a bit wild!
Thanks for your reply. I'm happy it helped you as it helped me. And yes, that quote from Yui has also stayed with me a lot too. There are two quotes that really stuck with me in Evangelion:
"You're afraid of the Shinji Ikari inside others."
And the other is,
"No one understands me."
"You never understood anything."
"I thought this was supposed to be a world without pain, and without consistency."
"That's because you thought that everyone else felt the same as you do."
The End of Evangelion hit me so well too. The whole Komm Susser Tod sequence, I was sobbing quietly. It was like someone finally understood me... took all of my feelings, thoughts, and emotions, and projected them onto the screen for not only others to see, but for myself to realize what was going in my head, heart, and soul...
Kaworu was also a harsh truth character for me, his talks with Shinji hit hard. And Shinji's confrontation with himself on the train in Episode 16, specifically, "You're afraid of the Shinji Ikari in others" hit me hard too.
A gay romance called "Given" actually has both. It's romance, but it deals with a lot of slice of life and lots of dark themes like suicide and depression. Sasaki and Miyano is another gay drama I love - sorry, I'm into those XD - as well as Seaside Stranger/The Stranger By The Shore.
If he's alright with some science fiction, action, and philosophical ideas, Neon Genesis Evangelion is great! LOTS of dark themes, philosophical ideologies, meanings of existence, suicide, depression, anxiety, the whole work. It's the reason I went to therapy and quite literally saved my life by keeping me from committing suicide cause I felt understood!
